Farm Tenure In Iowa: Iv. Farm Tenure Conditions In Palo Alto County, Rainer Schickele

Bulletin

The Palo Alto County Agricultural Planning Committee is 1 of the 99 similar committees in Iowa and of several thousands throughout the United States. Practically all counties in the United States now have agricultural planning committees consisting of farmers and other local people interested in agricultural affairs, who' are studying problems of land use and in some counties farm tenure. These committees are discussing questions of agricultural policies and programs critically, frankly and with refreshing open-mindedness. The findings and recommendations of the county committees are tabulated and intepreted on a state basis by the State Extension Service. The state results ...

Bordeaux Spray For Tip Burn And Early Blight Of Potatoes, A. T. Erwin Aug 2017

Bordeaux Spray For Tip Burn And Early Blight Of Potatoes, A. T. Erwin

Bulletin

Tip burn and early blight, the two most common foliage troubles of the potato in Iowa, are of enough economic importance in the corn belt to be dealt with profitably thru the use of the bordeaux spray. Five seasons of spraying experiments at the Iowa Agricultural Experiment station point to that conclusion. These tests also suggest that under Iowa conditions five applications of bordeaux mixture per season are likely to be most profitable. That number gave an average annual crop increase of 20 bushels of potatoes per acre and an average annual increased profit of $9.62 per acre. Three ...

Oats, M. L. Bowman, L. C. Burnett Aug 2017

Oats, M. L. Bowman, L. C. Burnett

Bulletin

The past season had a most unfavorable influence upon the oat crop of the state. The scarcity of suitable seed oats is very forcibly brought to the attention when we consider that there is not enough of the 1907 crop of standard weight (32 lbs. per bu.) to sow the fields that will go into oats this spring.

The oats are extremely light, being from 30 to 50 per cent hull, and average from 16 to 25 pounds per bushel. There are comparatively few exceptions where they weigh more than the maximum given.

Infection Studies With Watermelon Wilt Caused By Fusarium Niveum Efs., D. R. Porter May 2017

Infection Studies With Watermelon Wilt Caused By Fusarium Niveum Efs., D. R. Porter

Research Bulletin (Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station)

Watermelon wilt, caused by Fusarium niveum, is a serious disease in Iowa and in many other sections of the United States. The present Iowa acreage is less than 10 percent of the acreage before wilt became a factor.

Three heretofore undescribed seedling symptoms are described. These are: seedling rot, damping off and stunting.

The organism may cause lesions on any of the roots. These are at first water-logged and become discolored in advanced stages. The lesions vary in length from a trace to 28 centimeters.

Infection may be induced thru the use of infested soil, by means of spore suspensions ...

Studies On Formation Of Gas In Sweetened Condensed Milk, B. W. Hammer Mar 2017

Studies On Formation Of Gas In Sweetened Condensed Milk, B. W. Hammer

Research Bulletin (Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station)

In foods treated in various ways for their preservation, microorganisms that can resist conditions that the great majority of micro-organisms cannot withstand, occasionally develop and bring about undesirable changes. These changes are common in foods that have been subjected to heat and are the results of the presence of organisms that have the ability to resist temperatures that usually effectively sterilize the product in question. In sweetened condensed milk, which is presumably preserved by the addition of high percentages of sucrose, abnormal changes sometimes occur as a result of the presence of organisms that have the ability to develop in ...
