Duquesne Veterans’ Oral History Project

Daniel R. Cronin [1925-2018] was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946. He attended Duquesne University following his service from 1946 to 1950.

Fr. Daniel Walsh, C.S.Sp. [b. 1958] was ordained in 1991. He attended Duquesne University, the University of St. Thomas, and Catholic Theological Union, where he earned a Master of Divinity in 1991. From 1992-96, he was a missionary in Carauari, Amazonas, Brazil, going on to serve in many different roles at universities and dioceses across the United States, including as the University Chaplain and Director for Campus Ministry at Duquesne University from 2013-18. Fr. Walsh is a Parochial Vicar for St. Paul Cathedral Parish in the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. This is interview 1 of 4.

Schools lack a response system for effectively supporting student mental health needs and there is a substantial research to practice gap in this area. To better understand how to build capacity for schools, with and through teachers, the purpose of this study was to examine teachers' perceptions of current mental health needs in their schools; their knowledge and competencies about mental health issues as well as perceived competencies and barriers that contribute to burnout. Racism continues to be a pressing problem in Western Society. In some ways it even makes a great deal of sense to think about racism as a tool of political power. My dissertation explores the way in which racism is informed by the underlying social structure of whiteness, and the way that modern technology is informed by the underlying structure of the enframing. I draw on the works of George Yancy, and Cornel West to demonstrate that the everyday problems we face in racism are informed and guided by the systemic problem of whiteness.
