The Changing Geography And Fortunes Of Dublin Haute Cuisine Restaurants, 1958-2008, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Articles
This paper considers the changing geography and fortunes of Dublin’s haute cuisine restaurants over the last half century, placing them within both a national and international context. Ireland’s place within the global story of food is discussed, and the paper illustrates links between Dublin and European and global trends. The paper points out that Dublin in the 1950s could be seen as the gastronomic capital of the British Isles. The leading restaurateurs are briefly profiled, and the decline, stagnation, and gradual re-birth of Dublin’s haute cuisine restaurants over the 1958-2008 period is charted and discussed. The paper combines data from …

Stochastic Hybrid Embodied Co2-Eq Analysis: An Application To The Irish Apartment Building Sector, Adolf Acquaye, Aidan Duffy, Biswajit Basu

Although embodiedCO2-eq analysis has seen recent developments as evident in the establishment of the ISO14040 and 14044 LCA standards, it is recognized that due to weaknesses in gathering data on product-related emissions,embodiedCO2-eq values are probabilistic. This paper presents a stochastic analysis of hybrid embodied CO2-eq in buildings to account for this weakness in traditional methods and, by way of example, applies it to an Irish construction-sector case study. Using seven apartment buildings, 70,000 results are simulated with Monte Carlo analysis and used to derive probabilistic and cumulative embodied CO2-eq intensity distributions for apartment buildings in Ireland. A Wakeby distribution with …
Thermal Bridging - Understanding Its Critical Role In Energy Efficiency, Joseph Little, Beñat Arregi
Thermal Bridging - Understanding Its Critical Role In Energy Efficiency, Joseph Little, Beñat Arregi

Plane element heat loss[1] and thermal bridging[2] together constitute all the conduction heat loss (measured in W/K, watts per kelvin) through the thermal envelope[3] of a building. Perversely insulating the plane elements more and more without carefully dealing with junctions can lead to a significant increase in thermal bridging heat loss. This is often more significant in poorly thought-out energy-focused retrofits than in existing or new buildings.

Over the past quarter-century, many countries have experienced deeply divisive and highly destructive armed conflicts, ranging from Afghanistan to The Democratic Republic of Congo to Rwanda, East Timor, Northern Ireland, and the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Each of these countries is at a different point on the spectrum of emerging from and addressing the causes of conflicts. Moreover, with varying degrees of intervention and assistance from the international community, each is responding in highly differentiated ways to the challenges of emerging from conflict, as well as rebuilding or creating new institutions to allow movement forward.

The Move From Protectionism To Outward-Looking Industrial Development: A Critical Juncture In Irish Industrial Policy?, Paul Donnelly, John Hogan
Articles
This paper utilises a new framework for examining critical junctures to help us understand whether the changes to Irish industrial policy at the end of the 1950s constituted a critical juncture, breaking cleanly with what came before, or were a continuation of policy pathways previously established. The framework is made up of three elements, which must be identified in sequence, for us to be able to declare a critical juncture. Irish industrial policy is examined here, as it constitutes a core tenet of wider economic policy.

The Jury's Second Coming, Jenny E. Carroll

This article explores the controversial issue of jury nullification by reconceptualizing nullification through the lens of the Supreme Court's recent decisions beginning with Apprendi v New Jersey Apprendi's embrace of the jury's historical powers "” require a rejection of the formalized and static paradigm in favor of a more fluid vision of the law Despite extensive scholarship surrounding Apprendi an innovative though admittedly counterintuitive reading of the case line has been overlooked This reading draws on Apprendi's embrace of a vision of the law constructed and completed through jury interpretation and verdict Interpreted in this way the Apprendi case line …
