Bias And The Teachable Moment: Revisiting A Teacher Narrative, Darren Crovitz

Faculty and Research Publications

Such responsibility may be vital for English teachers, especially, as we strive to establish communities of writers and spaces for critical thinking and conversation. When I sat down to write about this experience, I saw it as an opportunity to discuss a taboo situation and its positive aftermath, with the aim of demonstrating how it might be possible to use such events as points of departure in creating engaging writing assignments.

In the face of opposition, it is often hard for a person to stay true to his or herself. We've all faced personal challenges that make us question who we are or what we're doing. For me, that challenge was believing in myself. When I first started taking journalism courses Spring quarter 2005, I wasn't sure if I was cut out for the major - the workload seemed too much. But I stayed with it, knowing that writing is one of my greatest skills and passions. Now, only a quarter away from graduation. I'm seeing more and more each day …

What Light Do Professional Doctorates Throw On The Question Of What Counts As Knowledge In The Academy At The Start Of The Twenty-First Century?, Sandra Fisher

Articles

In their article, ‘Professional Doctorates in England’, Bourner et al. (2001: 81) pose the question ‘What light do professional doctorates throw on the question of what counts as knowledge in the academy at the start of the twenty-first century?’ This article attempts to address this question. The article provides some background to the development of professional doctorates. It looks at forces, such as the rise of the knowledge society, economic drivers, and the demands of lifelong learning, that are shaping knowledge in the academy in the twenty-first century. I attempt to interpret these forces in the context of the development …

How Cultural Dynamics And Teacher Preparation Affect The Educational Opportunities Of Minority Students, Dedrick J. Sims Jul 2006

How Cultural Dynamics And Teacher Preparation Affect The Educational Opportunities Of Minority Students, Dedrick J. Sims

Essays in Education

The academic achievement of minority students in this country has been an issue of debate for educators and policy makers since the origins of education in America. Education reform has failed to offer a permanent solution that does not blame the students for their failure. America’s “color-blind” attitude and it’s refusal to accept the effects of cultural differences in the learning process will lead to a continued increase in the academic achievement “gap” in our classrooms. In this paper I address the historical contributions of America’s “biased” and self-protecting mechanisms that still plaque the education system today, the effects of …

Constructivist E-Learning For Continuous Professional Development Of Academic Staff, Roisin Donnelly, Ciara O’Farrell

Professional development for academic staff in e-learning is currently a priority for higher education institutions in the Republic of Ireland as lecturers in Irish Higher Education are experiencing increasing demands to incorporate e-learning into their teaching practice. This chapter reports on the design and implementation of a blended module in e-learning for the continuous professional development of such lecturers. In this chapter we evaluate the effectiveness of exposing our lecturers as online students so they can experience first-hand the advantages and disadvantages of e-learning. Further, we show how improvement in both teaching practice and student learning can be achieved through …

Rethinking Representations Of Slave Life A Historical Plantation Museums: Towards A Commemorative Museum Pedagogy, Julia Anne Rose Jan 2006

Rethinking Representations Of Slave Life A Historical Plantation Museums: Towards A Commemorative Museum Pedagogy, Julia Anne Rose

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Historical plantation museums have been criticized for biased interpretation practices that marginalize the historical presence of enslaved African Americans. This is a curriculum question that is relevant to historical museums that are wrestling with impacting social change and developing equitable practices to serve increasingly broad and diverse audiences. I conducted an action research study with five museum workers at Magnolia Mound Plantation (MMP) in south Louisiana to better understand the limits and possibilities of expanding slave life representations at this museum. I implemented the study using action research and archival research. Action research involved ethnographic methodologies including tour observations, interviews, …
