Cultural Diversity In Multinational Organisations, Marian Crowley-Henry
Cultural Diversity In Multinational Organisations, Marian Crowley-Henry
Conference papers
With the rhetoric in international management espousing the value of being able to access and capitalise on the knowledge of a workforce with international experience in order to compete globally and the need to embrace diversity (including cultural or ethnic diversity) in and across organisations, this paper discusses the findings from a qualitative research undertaking where senior and middle managers working for multinational organisations in a cross-section of industry sectors were interviewed. A total of twenty in-depth interviews were conducted with “foreign” managers based in Europe, the majority hired on local contracts. The findings presented in this paper outline the …

Is There A Need To Debate The Role Of Higher Education And The Public Good?, Sandra Fisher
Is There A Need To Debate The Role Of Higher Education And The Public Good?, Sandra Fisher
Articles
Calls for sustaining and increasing investment in higher education are often made on the basis that higher education is a `public good'. The idea of higher education as a public good is frequently conceptualized in terms of its contribution to economic development. If more people participate in higher education then society as a whole will benefit. Outside of the economic benefits of higher education there is less debate as to what is meant by `public good' in the context of higher education. This paper explores higher education as a public good and its role in realizing the public good (Jonathan …
Irish Journalist’S Attitudes Towards, And Use Of, Internet Technology, Edward Brennan
Irish Journalist’S Attitudes Towards, And Use Of, Internet Technology, Edward Brennan
Conference Papers
This paper explores the effects of Internet technology on the occupational culture and work practices of Irish journalists. There is a common view that the Internet, as an alternative source for news is challenging professional journalists. Increasingly amateurs may produce and disseminate stories to a potentially global readership. This paper presents results from a qualitative pilot study exploring Irish journalist’s reactions to this perceived threat. It reveals that the economic, social and legal features of the Irish journalistic field greatly mitigate any potential threat from the Internet. The research did reveal, however, that the Internet may have some unforeseen and …

Ira Arms Are Likely Stockpiled, Ready For Destruction, Tom Clonan
Ira Arms Are Likely Stockpiled, Ready For Destruction, Tom Clonan
Articles
The Provisional IRA in its statement yesterday pledges to ‘verifiably put its arms beyond use in a way which will further enhance public confidence and to conclude this as quickly as possible’. Given the size and dispersed nature of the IRA’s arsenal, this task will likely prove a logistical challenge that will take at least several weeks to complete. Over the last four decades, the IRA has taken delivery of a considerable number of consignments of weapons for its armed campaign. The main sources of IRA armament have traditionally been from republican sympathisers in the US and from other anti-establishment …

Garda Diversion Of Young Offenders: An Unreasonable Threat To Due Process Rights?, Liz Cambell
Garda Diversion Of Young Offenders: An Unreasonable Threat To Due Process Rights?, Liz Cambell
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
Diversion programmes play a significant role in the field of youth justice, as an alternative to the conventional court process, which aim to prevent the entry of the child into the formal justice system. The long-established practice of diverting certain young offenders from prosecution ensures that children are not drawn into the criminal justice system and are not given a criminal record (Goldson, 2000: 35). A non-statutory diversion programme entitled the Garda Liaison Scheme was established in Ireland in 1963, which diverted less serious young offenders from prosecution (Report of the Committee Appointed to Monitor the Effectiveness of the Diversion …

Perceptions Regarding Male Suicide And Preventative Services In Co. Kilkenny, Louise Butler, Jim Phelan
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This paper examines perceptions regarding rural male suicide and the preventative services available in Co. Kilkenny to combat the problem. For every four male suicides, there is one female suicide. The problem is becoming a rural rather than an urban one. The research set out to identify gaps in services and existing policies in addressing suicide among young rural men. Data were obtained from interview with the service providers and also from focus group discussions with young rural Kilkenny men. Total participants in the focus groups were 15 young men. Limitations to this study centred around the difficulty of organising …

The Custodial Remand System For Juveniles In Ireland: The Empirical Evidence, Gay Graham, Sarah Anderson
Articles
This paper documents the present system of custodial remands for children under sixteen years in Ireland. The research includes the entire population of children remanded into custody during the summer of 2000 (N=117). A flow chart model illustrates these young people’s experiences, and the paper highlights issues such as the number of non-offending children who are in custody (21%); the cycle of repeated remands and court appearances (up to 22 repeats); excessive periods of time spent in secure detention (up to 351 days); and the use of remand facilities for those awaiting a suitable residential placement (57%). It provides an …
