A woman is nothing without her reputation. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, a conflict of values emerged for ordinary women in Ireland. It is this conflict that has been under-addressed in the historiography, particularly in the context of the roles institutions played in putting forth a prescribed ideal of womanhood for working class women. Ordinary women risked ostracization and condemnation when stepping out of the prescribed roles of daughter, domestic servant, and mother. In doing so, this increased the likelihood working class women would come into contact with moral reformists, the court system or religious organizations which …

Social work, since its inception, has been premised on the value of social justice. At its core, social justice is about the elimination of structural violence. Thus, social work practitioners, educators, and researchers must be acutely aware of what structural violence is, how it is perpetuated, and what can be done to work towards its reduction and ultimate elimination. However, little social work research has been dedicated to quantitatively assessing the impacts of structural violence, especially as they relate to the criminal justice system. This Creative Writing project explores interfusional storytelling, a blending of oral and written literatures, as defined by Thomas King. The stories and poems in this collection use a number of narrative voices to tell the stories of an nłeʔkepmx world I created/am creating. Even the third person narrators have spoken parts in some of the stories; in "Three Bucks," for example, the narrator interrupts a story another character tells because the narrator thinks the teller is taking too long. Bullying victimization has been commonly linked with a range of psychosocial problems. To deal with distress, victims engage in coping behaviours that may be adaptive, maladaptive, or both. However, it may be difficult for youth to cope in ways that are adaptive. Instead, youth may engage in a variety of coping behaviours that are maladaptive. Considering that emerging adulthood often coincides with engaging in substance use and sexual risk taking, some youth may engage in these health risk behaviours as ways to cope with the psychosocial problems associated with bullying victimization. This paper assesses the current stance of multiculturalism and diversity in Europe by taking a closer look at the perception of Muslims in the United Kingdom and France. It is a comparative study that analyzes the sentiments of nationalism along with how a series of pivotal events that have impacted the integration process of the Muslim populations. There is robust evidence that some people achieve resilience despite adverse experiences (Cicchetti, 2013). The purpose of the present study was to examine if resilience as a trait predicted emotion regulation abilities, and if it moderated the relations between risk and parenting history and emotion regulation abilities. Another aim of the present study was to explore the concept of resilience as an outcome and process through narratives of redemption sequence. Participants consisted of 234 undergraduate students (age ranged from 17-30 years, M = 20.12, SD = 2.17, 79.1% women, 71.37% White) who have experienced a major stressful or traumatic event. …

Scottish nationalism has always been part of the political debate in the United Kingdom since the birth of the Union in 1707. In the 1880s, inspired by Irish Home Rule, Scottish nationalists began to demand greater autonomy from London. To appease the nationalists, London began devolving small amounts of power to Scotland. However, this small amount of devolution was not enough for the Scots. In 1967, the Labour Government of Harold Wilson responded to the growth of Scottish nationalism by proposing more devolution. This thesis examines the complex representation of walking in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. In his 1951 letter to his close associate Milton Waldman, Tolkien lamented the lack of a specifically English (as opposed to British) myth, and expressed his desire to create a mythology that he could dedicate to England. Tolkien’s novels, which are primarily structured around hobbits undertaking quests on foot, are an attempt to create this mythology. Through representing walking in all of its diversity, Tolkien engages with the politics and philosophy associated with the pedestrian mode. The genre of fantasy and …

The novella White Anemone presents a modern Chinese American story grounded in personal recollections, historical accounts, and cultural mythologies. It is a fragmented narrative that demonstrates the correlation between memory and desire, tracing a young woman's journey to adulthood and self-realization through trials of love, friendship, and family. The story is set in the early 2000's New York City Chinatown and depicts the diversity and socio-economic struggles of working-class Chinese immigrants in 21st-century America.

The History of the Netherlands during World War Two paints a one sided view of what war was like. While urban life receives lots of attention in English literature, rural life is often neglected. Through the stories of six individuals who immigrated to Canada in the decade following World War Two, a separate wartime experience will be examined and discussed.

As Long As You Have Your Health? Subjective Well-Being Trajectories In An Inflammatory Rheumatic Disease Sample, Jennifer Voth

The purpose of this study was to explore different trajectories of subjective well-being (SWB) in a sample of people with rheumatic conditions using growth mixture modeling (GMM), and to identify demographic, disease-related, and psychosocial risk and protective factors associated with these response patterns. Four hundred and thirty two adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), or gout were recruited online, and data were collected over the internet at six monthly intervals. Satisfaction with life (SWL; Diener, Emmons, Larson &Griffin, 1985) and positive and negative affect (PANAS; Watson, Clark, &Tellegen, 1988) were measured at each time …

Few studies have investigated client views of helpful processes within trauma therapies, and it is not known whether clients find controversial reexperiencing interventions useful. The present study used archival data (client self-report questionnaires, interviews, and videotapes of therapy sessions) collected as part of a larger process-outcome investigation (Paivio & Nieuwenhuis, 2001) to examine process characteristics of client-identified helpful events (HE) (N = 29) and researcher-identified control events (CE) (N = 29) in Emotion Focused Therapy for Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse (EFT-AS).
