An Examination Of Eu Directive 98/76/Ec In Regards To The Irish Road Haulage Industry, Eoin Plant, Declan Allen, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

The Irish economy experienced a tremendous increase in economic growth during the 1990s and early 21st Century (Celtic Tiger). This economic boom was export driven and the Irish Road Haulage Industry transported the majority of products produced at some stage, if not a number of stages in the logistics tunnel. In recent times there has been somewhat of a growing unease in the road haulage industry in relation to increasing costs, squeezing already tight profit margins. A report commissioned by the Department of Public Enterprise illustrated that 48% of hauliers identified themselves as needing training in the area of cost …

Children's Understanding Of Television Advertising Intent, Margaret-Anne Lawlor, Andrea Prothero Apr 2003

Children's Understanding Of Television Advertising Intent, Margaret-Anne Lawlor, Andrea Prothero

Articles

Over the last three decades, a substantial body of research has accumulated seeking to address how exactly advertising, and in particular, telelvision advertising, influences children. Yet, given the diversity of methodologies used and the findings presented, it has been suggested that a common consensus on how exactly advertising affects children has not been reached. This paper presents a brief overview of the literature addressing chidlren's understanding of advertising with a view to identifying the contributions to date in this area and the accompanying gaps, omissions and under-resesearched perspectives. Findings are then presented from an exploratory study of eight and nine …

John Mcgahern: From The Local To The Universal, Eamon Maher Jan 2003

John Mcgahern: From The Local To The Universal, Eamon Maher

Books/Chapters

John McGahern has distinguished himself as one of Ireland's finest living novelists and short story writers with such works as The Pornographer, The Barracks, Amongst Women, and the controversial The Dark, which was banned in Ireland. His latest novel, By the Lake, earned him much critical acclaim, and he was one of only four recipients of a 2003 Lannan Literary Award. In this comprehensive guide to the fiction of John McGahern, Eamon Maher argues that in his themes, scenes, scenarios, and characters, which on the surface seem to originate from a limited source--the local--we can …

The Importance Of Male Staff As Role Models In Residential Childcare: Men Can Care!, Niall C. Mcelwee, David Parslow Jan 2003

The Importance Of Male Staff As Role Models In Residential Childcare: Men Can Care!, Niall C. Mcelwee, David Parslow

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

A 'crisis of masculinity' reached fever pitch in the British media in the mid 1990's when it was widely reported that female pupils were achieving better school results and outstripping their male counterparts in locating employment in the diminishing youth labour market (Mac an Ghaill, 1994; Connell, 1995). We had a more reserved debate in Ireland at that time but it is now gathering in momentum once again. This paper is written partly as a response to the two papers by Mark Smith (2003) and Mike Burns (2003) published in the last volume of the Relational Journal of Child and …

Ireland's Chance To Sway Security Policy In The Eu, Tom Clonan Jan 2003

Ireland's Chance To Sway Security Policy In The Eu, Tom Clonan

Articles

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's call for highly mobile, rapidly deployable UN 'battle groups' reflects a growing requirement worldwide for what are termed 'third generation' peace-enforcement operations. First and second generation operations would typically describe the 'classical' UN peacekeeping mission mounted during the Cold War. Such operations dating between the 1940's and 1990's were normally deployed with UN Security Council approval and with the prior consent of the belligerent parties involved. The political maneuvering necessary to secure such consent allied with the typically large numbers of peacekeepers deployed during this period normally meant that it was usually several months, even …

There Is No Pperiphery: Globalising Culture And The Cinematographic Language Of Cultural Mediation In Modern European Film, Sascha Harris Jan 2003

There Is No Pperiphery: Globalising Culture And The Cinematographic Language Of Cultural Mediation In Modern European Film, Sascha Harris

Conference Papers

The paper investigates the various narrative and cinematographic strategies employed in Pasolini's 'The Gospel According to St Matthew' (1964), Tarkovsy's 'Andrei Rublev' (1966) and Kieslowski's 'A Short Film about Love' (1988) to correct and undermine a decentred representation which is structured around power-informed centre-periphery relations. It discusses the issue of assumed centrality and modern alienation through instrumentalised, detached perception.

What's In A Name?: Exploring Title Designations In Child And Youth Care In Ireland, Niall C. Mcelwee, Thom Garfat Jan 2003

What's In A Name?: Exploring Title Designations In Child And Youth Care In Ireland, Niall C. Mcelwee, Thom Garfat

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This paper presents the findings of empirical research conducted with 338 thirdlevel social care students across seven sites and addresses a national Irish debate on title designations currently in use for people working in the social care area of the 'caring professions' within the Republic ofIreiand. The research limits itself to what is understood in international systems as 'child and youth care' or 'social care'. A number of title designations Irish practitioners might strategically adopt are presented, whilst some of the advantages and disadvantages of choosing particular titles are explored. The main finding of this study is that there remains …
