This thesis discusses the current problems with the traditional structure through which literature is taught in high schools today. It presents a modernistic approach to engaging high school students in reading and literature, and tackles the lack of relevance the old classic novels have in the lives of 21st century students. It introduces the idea of using young adult novels to teach the literary concepts that states mandate in their curriculum, and it emphasizes the important role educators play in preparing their students for the real world.

This thesis analyzes the history of English literature as it evolves due to the changing thoughts and ways of poets. Discussing conventions of this literature such as innocence, escapism, and hope, it also analyzes the works of various different poets from these time periods and how they shaped literature into what it has become.

The person and idea of King Arthur conjures up various images ranging from a young boy pulling a sword from a stone, to a triumphant warrior in battle, to an aging man floating on a barge to the mystical isle of Avalon. Some of the current scholarly discussion regarding Arthur revolves around his historicity. Whether or not a man, warrior, or king named Arthur ever actually walked the earth has little effect on the literature of the man and his legends. Most Americans are unaware of how far back the cultural dichotomy goes, its source, or how significant it is in determining our behavior. Therefore, the use of language to preserve culture in Havelok the Dane and The Mabinogion is examined. The Mabinogion and Havelok the Dane are quite different in provenance, style, and purpose; yet, there are similarities. Each work has pathos, humor, excitement, and human emotion. A Study Of John Henry Newman's Influence On Stephen Dedalus In James Joyce's A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man, Robert J. Mceleney

An analysis of what has been overlooked previously in the relationship between James Joyce, Stephen Dedalus, and John Henry Newman that is seen in the novel A Portrait. James Joyce’s use of Newman’s writings in the novel indicates that he had knowledge of the author’s major works. Additionally, Stephan Dedalus uses quotations from his works. He uses the thoughts and words of Newman’s sermons in his prayer life. Stephen’s intellectual and spiritual growth cannot be properly evaluated apart from Newman’s place in the novel.
