Daniel Hassed “Austin” McInnis was born in Rumford, Maine in 1914. His father was an electrician and his mother worked in the batting mill. He made money during the Depression working as a caddy. He attended Bentley College and then returned to Rumford to work in the mill. From there, he was hired as an accountant at a Chevrolet dealership and worked there until he retired.

Frances (Kowalzyk ) McInnis was born on March 15, 1923 in Rumford, Maine. Her parents moved to Rumford around the same time that the Muskies moved there, attracted by the promise of mill jobs. …

George Arnold Roach was born July 28, 1929 in Rockland, Maine. He grew up in Houlton and summered in Rockland. His father, Herbert Roach, was a potato farmer, buyer, and machinery dealer. He attended the University of Maine and later joined the military, where he spent 30 years. He became interested in politics, particularly the Democratic Party in Maine. He worked on several of Muskie’s campaigns and stayed involved, both distantly and actively throughout his career. At the time of this interview, he worked for the State of Maine Department of Agriculture as a political appointee.

Charles J. “Chick” O’Leary was born January 25, 1937 in Bangor, Maine. His parents were Charles, Sr. and Doris (Foley) O’Leary. He was childhood friends with William S. “Bill” Cohen; they played ball together. He attended John Bapst high school and started college at St. Michael’s, then took a year off to work on an oil rig and completed his studies at the University of Maine, Orono, receiving a master’s in History. Ron M. Linton was born in Detroit, Michigan on May 7, 1929 and attended Michigan State University, which was then known as Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science, where he graduated in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. After school, he started out as a freelance reporter for the United Press and then went into the service until 1954. He became the press secretary to the late U.S. Senator Blair Moody. Anthony “Tony” Karahalios was born August 9, 1919 in Lewiston, Maine to Nicholas and Christine Karahalios. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1937 and Bentley College in 1941, then served in World War II flying troops and cargo carrier planes in the Pacific theater. He was an accountant for 50 years. Tony had close ties with the Lewiston/Auburn business community and knew many Republicans and their views. He was active in statewide campaigns including Frank Coffin’s and Tom Delahanty’s campaigns. He was treasurer of Frank Coffin’s campaign. He was married to Marisse Botiggi Karahalios.

Carlton Day “Bud” Reed was born in Bath, Maine in 1930 and raised in Woolwich, Maine. He attended Colby College, graduating in the class of 1953, and worked on Muskie’s 1954 gubernatorial campaign. Reed was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1958. Losing his bid for reelection in 1960, he ran for the Senate in 1962 defeating Rodney E. Ross, Jr. Reelected in 1964, Reed ran for the Senate President’s post. Barry Goldwater’s landslide defeat in that year helped the Democrats gain control of the Maine Legislature for the first time since 1911. Following his term as Senate …

James Tierney was born on April 27, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in Brunswick, Maine and took advantage of the proximity to Bowdoin College by sitting in on classes and studying in the library. He earned his B.A. at the University of Maine, Orono, then married and attended University of Maine Law School while also serving in the Maine House of Representatives. He started a law firm, primarily representing labor, and was appointed State Attorney General in 1980.
