Rehabilitation, Research, And Reform: Prison Policy In Ireland, Mary Rogan Sep 2012

Rehabilitation, Research, And Reform: Prison Policy In Ireland, Mary Rogan

Articles

The paper tracks the concept of rehabilitation within official thinking in

Ireland since the foundation of the State. It explores when and how the term was first

used and how it has fared since. It then examines barriers to and the role of research

in the making of prison policy and comments on data deficits in the system at present.

Finally it looks at the role of interest groups within the criminal justice system in

Ireland, and specifically their effect, or potential effect, on the formation of prison

policy.

The Unprecedented Assimilation Of Mobile Telephony In Ireland: A Phenomenon Of The Celtic Tiger Era Or A Result Of Cultural Traits?, Andreas Scheibelhut Sep 2012

The Unprecedented Assimilation Of Mobile Telephony In Ireland: A Phenomenon Of The Celtic Tiger Era Or A Result Of Cultural Traits?, Andreas Scheibelhut

Masters

Following the universal acceptance of mobile telephony the once elitist gadget has become an indispensable democratic tool of everyday communications over the last three decades. Controversially, this thesis illustrates that its level of both adoption and usage did not develop in a similar homogenous pattern in selected OECD countries. In particular, the Irish performance is rather astonishing given the speed of adoption as well as the exceptional high revenue figures achieved by the wireless operators. Consequently, this work determines a selection of factors that drive and encourage both the adoption and usage of cellular telephony in Ireland. The Irish experience …

Defining Terrorism: A Risky Business?, Helena Kiely Sep 2012

Defining Terrorism: A Risky Business?, Helena Kiely

Dissertations

The Criminal Justice (Terrorist Offences) Act 2005 introduced definitions of terrorist activity, terrorist group and terrorist offences for the first time. These definitions, enacted subsequent to the Good Friday Agreement (1998), were examined to ascertain whether perspectives of crime control or risk influenced their formulation. Evidence of control perspectives were elicited within the definitions but themes of risk or actuarial justice were not found. The policy analysis established that the definitions which emerged through process of coerced policy convergence emanating from the Council of the European Union with Irish legislators having limited influence.

To Cctv Or Not? An Examination Of Community-Based Cctv In Ireland, Aidan Donnelly Sep 2012

To Cctv Or Not? An Examination Of Community-Based Cctv In Ireland, Aidan Donnelly

Dissertations

Over the last twenty years, there has been a significant increase in the use of closed circuit television (CCTV) systems. Most people are familiar with the use of such systems in locations such as shops, financial institutions, hotels, schools, hospitals, sports stadia and so forth. However, there are also a significant number of public CCTV systems that have been erected and operate in public space areas such as town centres, residential housing estates etc. Some of these CCTV systems are police only or local authority only systems but a growing number are what is termed community-based systems. The principal aim …

Understanding The Relationship Between Entrepreneurship Education, Experiential Learning And Business Ethics, Kathleen Farrell, Thomas Cooney, Christina Benson, Gary Palin Jun 2012

Understanding The Relationship Between Entrepreneurship Education, Experiential Learning And Business Ethics, Kathleen Farrell, Thomas Cooney, Christina Benson, Gary Palin

Conference papers

Recent cognitive research in entrepreneurship describes the entrepreneur as a ‘motivated tactician’, who can be characterized as a “fully engaged thinker who has multiple cognitive strategies available” (Haynie et al., 2010: p18), and the ability to shift and choose rapidly from among them based on specific goals, motives, needs and circumstances, leading to the ability to act (or not) in response to perceived entrepreneurial opportunities. The Association for Experiential Education broadly defines experiential education as: “a philosophy and methodology in which educators purposefully engage with learners in direct experience and focused reflection in order to increase knowledge, develop skills and …

Understanding Policy Change Using A Critical Junctures Theory In Comparative Context: The Cases Of Ireland And Sweden, Paul Donnelly, John Hogan May 2012

Understanding Policy Change Using A Critical Junctures Theory In Comparative Context: The Cases Of Ireland And Sweden, Paul Donnelly, John Hogan

Articles

Utilizing a new theory for examining critical junctures, we seek to better understand the nature of industrial policy change in Ireland during the 1950s and macroeconomic policy change in Sweden in the 1980s. Did these policy changes constitute critical junctures, or something less, and if so why? The theory consists of three elements – economic crisis, ideational change, and the nature of the policy change – that must be identified for us to be able to declare with some certainty if a policy change constitutes a critical juncture. Herein, we will be examining the roles of a variety of change …

Molecular Genetic And Dna Methylation Profiling Of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia: A Focus On Divergent Prognostic Subgroups And Subsets, Nicola Cahill Apr 2012

Molecular Genetic And Dna Methylation Profiling Of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia: A Focus On Divergent Prognostic Subgroups And Subsets, Nicola Cahill

Doctoral

Advancements in prognostication have improved the subdivision of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) into diverse prognostic subgroups. In CLL, IGHV unmutated and IGHV3-21 genes are associated with a poor-prognosis, conversely, IGHV mutated genes with a favourable outcome. The finding of multiple CLL subsets expressing ‘stereotyped’ B-cell receptors (BCRs) has suggested a role for antigen(s) in leukemogenesis. Patients belonging to certain stereotyped subsets share clinical and biological characteristics, yet limited knowledge exists regarding the genetic and epigenetic events that may influence their clinical behaviour. This thesis aimed to, further investigate Swedish IGHV3-21-utilising patients, screen for genetic and DNA methylation events in CLL …

Space And The Geographical Imagination On The Dublin Docklands’, Moira Sweeney Feb 2012

Space And The Geographical Imagination On The Dublin Docklands’, Moira Sweeney

Conference Papers

In my practice–based doctoral study Dublin Dockers, Visualising a Changing Community, I am foregrounding the application of ethnographic documentary methods and investigation in examining the world of a docker and stevedore community on Dublin's docks. Through excavating and recuperating narratives which are absent from mainstream media hegemony, the study is unraveling the transformations experienced by a stevedoring constituency as a consequence of globalisation, urban regeneration and the current recession. This paper engages with arguments for the revitalisation of our imaginations on space in the context of an audio visual and textual study of the urban and maritime Dublin dockland space.

Seeking Redemption Through Art: The Example Of Colum Mccann, Eamon Maher Feb 2012

Seeking Redemption Through Art: The Example Of Colum Mccann, Eamon Maher

Articles

Colum McCann is rightly acknowledged as being one of Ireland’s most talented living novelists. The success of his most recent novel, Let the Great World Spin (2009), which won the National Book Award in America in 2009 and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2011, really cemented his reputation as a writer of substance. He is also one of the new generation of Irish novelists who possess few discernibly ‘Irish’ traits, their preoccupations being of a more global nature.

Engineering Leadership, Mike Murphy, Eugene Coyle Jan 2012

Engineering Leadership, Mike Murphy, Eugene Coyle

Books/Book chapters

By 1921 the American sociologist Thorstein Veblen in his book The Engi-neers and the Price System argued for a technocracy in which the welfare of humanity would be entrusted to the control of the engineers because they alone were competent to understand the complexities of the industrial system and processes and thereby optimize and maximize its output. This chapter sets out to explore the extent to which Veblen’s technocratic leadership thesis has come to pass. We first review the role of the engineer in society and in the context of Europe, the US and China, and examine the influence of …

Community-Engaged Student Research: Online Resources, Real World Impact, Catherine Bates, Kenneth Burns

Staff Articles and Research Papers

This paper offers case studies from two Irish Higher Education Institutions on the benefits and challenges of using on-line databases and application processes to recruit students to community-engaged research projects. We briefly introduce the principles of Community-Based Research (CBR), showing how this pedagogy allows students to collaborate with underserved community partners and not-for-profit organisations on real-life research projects, preparing them for the workplace, and enhancing their college experience. Staff in University College Cork (UCC) and Technological University City (DIT) use digital resources to offer students the opportunity to browse live research topics, suggested to us by communities, on our websites, …

Dealing With Overcrowding In Prisons: Contrasting Judicial Approaches From The Usa And Ireland., Mary Rogan Jan 2012

Dealing With Overcrowding In Prisons: Contrasting Judicial Approaches From The Usa And Ireland., Mary Rogan

Articles

Two recent decisions, one given by the Supreme Court of the United States of America and one of the Irish High Court, address the consequences of overcrowding in prisons. In Brown, Governor of California et at v. Plata et al1 (hereinafter Plata) the US Supreme Court upheld a decision of a three judge federal court requiring the State of California to reduce its prison population to 137.5% of the prison system’s design capacity, requiring the release of up to 46,000 prisoners. The Court agreed that the overcrowding in the Californian prison system had caused the breach of prisoners’ rights under …

Ireland's Opportunity To Learn From England's Difficulties? Auditing Uncertainty In Child Protection, Brid Featherstone, Sue White, Dave Wastell Jan 2012

Ireland's Opportunity To Learn From England's Difficulties? Auditing Uncertainty In Child Protection, Brid Featherstone, Sue White, Dave Wastell

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This article draws from the authors’ experiences of research in England on aspects of New Labour’s reforms in the field of child protection to counsel caution against standardisation processes currently underway in the Republic of Ireland. It is argued that such processes are deeply problematic when dealing with the complexity of child protection work. Alternatives to standardisation are offered drawing from the literature on systems design. Such alternatives are likely to build confidence and trust in services.

Practice Makes Practice . . . Visible? Revealing Structures Of The Artistic Field By Articulating The Evasive Properties Inherent In Its Systems Of Production Through Art Practice, Naomi Elizabeth Sex Jan 2012

Practice Makes Practice . . . Visible? Revealing Structures Of The Artistic Field By Articulating The Evasive Properties Inherent In Its Systems Of Production Through Art Practice, Naomi Elizabeth Sex

Other

This practice-led research project attempts to seek out and reveal the structures that frame the production of art practice, through and with art practice itself. With this premise in mind, the first phase of the study aims to use practice-led research by adopting quasi-ethnographic strategies firstly to explore the field of artistic production, and secondly in an attempt to activate, capture and contain tangible evidence that the artistic field is powered by persuasive informal discourse and practices that contribute to stringent and hierarchical rules of engagement. Entering the second phase of the project the contribution of this study is based …

The Ryan Report (2009). A Practitioner's Perspective On Implications For Residential Child Care, Noel Howard Jan 2012

The Ryan Report (2009). A Practitioner's Perspective On Implications For Residential Child Care, Noel Howard

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This article suggests that recent abuse reports and the Ryan Report in particular are now warning signs etched in the consciousness of social care workers. Quite rightly, this consciousness will determine how social care workers approach their work with children in the care system. In many care units the incessant, ostensibly plausible, demands of bureaucracy mean that children exist in an artificial, sanitised care bubble where they are bereft of structure, empathy, spontaneity and real relationships – the very things they crave. Written in a personal capacity and based on the author’s background practice experience, some of this article represents …

Accessible Information: Advocating The Use Of Technology For Individuals With Intellectual Disability On Their Path To Individualised Services, Michelle Moloney Jan 2012

Accessible Information: Advocating The Use Of Technology For Individuals With Intellectual Disability On Their Path To Individualised Services, Michelle Moloney

Dissertations

Providing people with an intellectual disability (ID), opportunities for social integration have been shown to have a reliable positive influence on their well-being (Wehmeyer et al., 2006; Bunning, 2009). A large percentage of individuals with ID are unable to read and write. For this reason in order for the person to make an informed choice the person needs to have good information presented in a way that they can understand. They may need to see tangible visual aids (video, role play, film, photographs). It may need to be demonstrated to them a number of times. This assists a person in …
