Engineers play a central role in addressing the challenges which face society. However, the influence of globalisation, disruptive technological change and complex social problems will greatly affect the way engineers work in the future. As a result, there have been calls to embrace transformational change in engineering education, yet the literature reveals that many reform efforts have fallen short. Industry and society will therefore continue to look to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to better prepare engineering graduates with the new skills needed to face the challenges of the future. Notwithstanding the critical and valued role that technical engineering subjects have …

Academic Experiences In Policy Development: A Grounded Theory Study Across Three Higher Education Institutions, Marie Brennan

The National Strategy for Higher Education to 2030 (Hunt Report, 2011) suggested that a framework should be put in place to facilitate institutional mergers. Subsequently, three institutes of technology in Dublin signed a memorandum of understanding establishing the Technological University for Dublin Alliance (Dublin Institute of Technology, the Institute of Technology Tallaght and the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown.) The presidents from each institute formed a steering group that consisted of a team of staff from across the three campuses. The role of this team was to launch the foundation themes that were necessary for designation. One of these themes was …
A Practice-Led Approach To Aligning Learning Theories With Learning And Teaching Strategies In Third Level Chemistry Education, Christine O'Connor
A Practice-Led Approach To Aligning Learning Theories With Learning And Teaching Strategies In Third Level Chemistry Education, Christine O'Connor
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
Large class sizes and a diverse student cohort have resulted in challenges for academics in third level institutes both nationally and internationally. This is a result of widening of participation and the drive to create a knowledge-based society in Ireland for the future. The focus in this paper is on third level chemistry education and looking at the issues arising both in the class and laboratory and suggesting learning and teaching strategies in order to overcome them or to enhance efficiencies. The learning and teaching strategies suggested however may be applied across many disciplines. The learning theories that underpin these …
Unravelling The Myth Of Effective Teaching In Mathematics, Mark Prendergast, John O'Donoghue
Unravelling The Myth Of Effective Teaching In Mathematics, Mark Prendergast, John O'Donoghue
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
Effective teaching is the backbone of any successful education system with many arguing that it is the single biggest contributor to student success. However despite such importance, significant differences in teacher effectiveness are still evident in Irish classrooms at all levels of education. This research investigates the influence that individual teachers can have on students’ enjoyment of mathematics at second level and attempts to unravel the myth of effective teaching. The research started out as a followon study that further analysed data collected by the authors when they designed a pedagogical framework with the aim of promoting student interest in …
High Oral Communication Apprehensives: How Can Students Be Helped To Reduce Their Fear Of Public Speaking?, Dan Shanahan
High Oral Communication Apprehensives: How Can Students Be Helped To Reduce Their Fear Of Public Speaking?, Dan Shanahan
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
The literature has identified oral communication as a skill that employers desire of their workforce. Even though accounting and business education programmes place considerable emphasis on the advancement of communication competencies among students, not all students appear to benefit from communication skills development. This may arise from of a fear of communicating with others, commonly known as oral communication apprehension, a factor which inhibits an individual’s willingness to communicate in one or a number of contexts - one to one conversations, communicating in groups, at meetings and making a presentation in public – and which may inhibit development of effective …
