Gender As Love: A Theological Account, Fellipe Do Vale May 2021

Gender As Love: A Theological Account, Fellipe Do Vale

Religious Studies Theses and Dissertations

Despite its ubiquity in nearly all academic disciplines, gender has remained a contested concept, so much so that there is considerable ambiguity regarding what makes one a woman or a man and what relation such traits have with the human body. Debates typically polarize around the positions of gender essentialism and social constructionism, though both have been shown to have serious limitations. Additionally, theologians have typically approached these debates either by understanding gender as a category for sustained investigation but finding that the tools and virtues of theology are ill-suited for doing so, or by retaining the tools and virtues …

International Law And Extraterritoriality: Brief Of International And Extraterritorial Law Scholars As Amici Curiae (U.S. V. Microsoft), Anthony J. Colangelo, Austen L. Parrish Jan 2018

International Law And Extraterritoriality: Brief Of International And Extraterritorial Law Scholars As Amici Curiae (U.S. V. Microsoft), Anthony J. Colangelo, Austen L. Parrish

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Written by international and extraterritorial law scholars, the attached amicus brief was submitted in the U.S. v. Microsoft case. That case involves whether Congress, when it enacted the Stored Communications Act, intended to provide federal and local law enforcement authority to unilaterally seize the private email communications of foreign citizens stored abroad.

The amicus brief explains how the Charming Betsy canon and the law of extraterritoriality are part of a well-defined body of law the U.S. Supreme Court has developed for determining how American law applies abroad. These doctrines exist independently: one aims to avoid unsanctioned violations of international law. …

Epidemiological Placism In Public Health Emergencies: Ebola In Two Dallas Neighborhoods, Carolyn Smith-Morris Jan 2017

Epidemiological Placism In Public Health Emergencies: Ebola In Two Dallas Neighborhoods, Carolyn Smith-Morris

Anthropology Research

Super-diverse cities face distinctive challenges during infectious disease outbreaks. For refugee and immigrant groups from epidemic source locations, identities of place blend with epidemiological logics in convoluted ways during these crises. This research investigated the relationships of place and stigma during the Dallas Ebola crisis. Ethnographic results illustrate how Africanness, more than neighborhood stigma, informed Dallas residents’ experience of stigma. The problems of place-based stigma, the imprecision of epidemiological placism, and the cohesion of stigma to semiotically powerful levels of place – rather than to realistic risk categories – are discussed. Taking its authority from epidemiology, placism is an …

Terrorist Watchlists, Jeffrey D. Kahn Jan 2017

Terrorist Watchlists, Jeffrey D. Kahn

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

This chapter assesses the legal history and policy development of the U.S. government's system of terrorist watchlists and the institutions established to create and use them. Watchlisting is in fact an old practice given new meaning by technological change and the societal impact of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Statutes and judicial precedents from an earlier era on which the first post-9/11 watchlists were built were not made to regulate the expanded uses of the new watchlists and presented few if any constraints on their development. Civil litigation has both revealed the inner workings of terrorist watchlists and spurred …
