Where Is Illinois Now And Where Is It Going?, Rob Paral
Where Is Illinois Now And Where Is It Going?, Rob Paral
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
Granted statehood in 1818, Illinois is slightly over two centuries old. During that time, in approximately fifty-year segments, our state has embodied trends that defined our nation. The early 1880s brought westward expansion by European migrants and the taking of natives’ land. The second half of that century saw a population explosion and rapid urbanization. In the first part of the twentieth century, Illinois industrialization was essential to helping our nation win two world wars and establishing the United States as the pre-eminent world power.
Most recently, a new half-century period can be identified. One of profound social and economic …

The Great Debate, Britain 1868-1876: An Exploration Of British Politics Via Reacting To The Past, Ryan Jurich
Honors Theses
The Victorian era (ca. 1830 – 1900) in Britain saw massive economic and social transformations brought about by industrialization and the emergence, for the first time, of a modern class society. This research project focused on creating an innovative way for students of history to learn about the various political, economic, and social changes shaping and being shaped by the decisions of the British government in the latter half of the 19th century by using the Reacting to the Past curriculum framework. In particular, it focused on the historical first ministries of William Gladstone and Benjamin Disraeli, their famous …

The Role Of The Frequency Of Trauma On The Effects Of Ptsd And Health On Firefighters And Police Officers, Lizbeth Cantu Cantu
The Role Of The Frequency Of Trauma On The Effects Of Ptsd And Health On Firefighters And Police Officers, Lizbeth Cantu Cantu
Research Papers
This research paper is examining the role of frequency of trauma and the effects of PTSD and health on firefighters and police officers. There have been mixed findings regarding the relationship between trauma, PTSD, and health. Further research is needed to better understand these relationships, especially in high risks occupations such as firefighters and police officers. Firefighters and police officers are at greater risk for developing PTSD, negative health outcomes, and be exposed to multiple traumas and it is important to study how these relate. Furthermore, there is little research investigating the relationship of the frequency of trauma, PTSD, and …
Performing Research: Contemplating What It Means To Be A "Man", George Belliveau
Performing Research: Contemplating What It Means To Be A "Man", George Belliveau
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
Sharing research in performative modes opens new possibilities for meaning making. This article offers a monologue that explores my experience of working on a theatre project with military veterans. The impact of working on the creative process with veterans inspired this performed piece, and provided an opportunity to contemplate what it means to be a ‘man’ in today’s society. The article first situates performed research within current arts-based literature prior to sharing the creative piece, which is at the heart of this offering. The piece then concludes with how performed research opens the possibility for different forms of engagement and …

TITLE: The Pernicious Prophecy of Diminished Academic Expectations MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. D. John McIntyre This study examines the relationship between academic expectations and achievement, particularly as it concerns minority students. The 2014 Illinois Governor Race: Quinn Vs Rauner, John S. Jackson
The 2014 Illinois Governor Race: Quinn Vs Rauner, John S. Jackson
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
The 2014 Governor’s race in Illinois featured two candidates who are the epitome of campaigns for high office in America today. In addition, the race also illustrated the major trends, driven by big money and big media, which are shaping our politics in the 21st century. This paper examines and analyzes the governor’s race in order to learn what it teaches us about politics in Illinois, and in the United States midway through the second decade of this century.
Ars Rhetorica Et Sacrae Litterae: St. Patrick And The Art Of Rhetoric In Early Medieval Briton And Ireland, Brian James Stone
Ars Rhetorica Et Sacrae Litterae: St. Patrick And The Art Of Rhetoric In Early Medieval Briton And Ireland, Brian James Stone
Dissertations
This dissertation is the first intensive rhetorical analysis of the writings of St. Patrick. This analysis, informed by interdisciplinary perspectives and methodologies, contributes to our understanding of the rhetorical nature of St. Patrick's writings, as well as the nature of rhetorical education in early medieval Britain and Ireland The literary significance of Patrick's extant writings, Epistola ad milites Corotici and Confessio, beyond their apparent historical value, has regularly been disputed by prominent scholars. Questions of the level of education Patrick received before being assigned to the bishopric in Ireland have informed debates over the quality and importance of his contribution …

The Importance Of Being Useless: Revolution And Judgment In 'The Picture Of Dorian Gray', Marshall Lewis Johnson
The Importance Of Being Useless: Revolution And Judgment In 'The Picture Of Dorian Gray', Marshall Lewis Johnson
Theses
The preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray is often dismissed as merely an addendum to the novel intended to detract hostile readers and absolve the text itself of any accusations of immorality. When coupled with the narrative itself, however, the novel shows both the impossibility of producing the new through traditional notions of revolution, as well as the way in which the Deleuzian conception of judgment inhibits Dorian from ever viewing the portrait as insignificantly amoral, as not symbolic of his sins. Yet the preface, coupled with the various aesthetic objects in the text, is productive of a new …
