Rosanna Mastrangelo was born in February 1964, in South Philadelphia. Her parents, along with the rest of her family, were Italian immigrants who had come to America after the end of World War II in hopes of rebuilding a better life for themselves. Raised in a tight-knit Italian neighborhood and surrounded by Old World traditions, Rosanna quickly realized the importance of remaining close to one’s roots, especially in forming her unique sense of identity. Dr. Kevin J. Harty was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1948. He grew up in Brooklyn until his family moved to Chicago when he was about twelve years old. His father worked for the telephone company, which spurred the family’s move to Chicago, and his mother stayed home and cared for the family. Dr. Harty attended high school in the suburbs of Chicago, graduating when he was fifteen and a half years old. The primary topic of this essay is the causes for disinvestment that occurred during the deindustrialization of Camden, NJ, between 1960 and 1980. The paper constructs a framework based on the industrial history of Camden, which is composed roughly of the years between 1900 and 1960. This basis explains Camden’s transition from a small town with the purpose of ferry terminal to an industrial powerhouse city. The main portion of the essay discusses the economic and social events that affected Camden between the transformative years of 1960 and 1980, as the industrial era was concluding. Where Have All The Lithuanians Gone? A Study Of St. Casimir’S Lithuanian Parish In South Philadelphia, Maryanne Aros Morrison

St. Casimir’s Parish played a vibrant role in its surrounding community in the 20th century, through both the existence of its church and its adjoining elementary school. In 1993, St. Casimir’s Church celebrated its 100th anniversary with much fanfare. Nineteen years after that celebration, the church building remains, but only as a worship site. In addition, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia closed St. Casimir’s School at the end of the 2005-2006 school year. The school served the South Philadelphia community for 100 years before it closed. The parishioners of St. Casimir’s once were vital participants in the life of South Philadelphia. …

Frederick Van Fleteren was born in St. Clair Shores, Michigan in 1941. He was raised by two devout Catholic parents who valued his education.
