The Public Life And Achievements Of James Duval Phelan, Jean Tully Jan 1935

The Public Life And Achievements Of James Duval Phelan, Jean Tully

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

As a figure in the American period of California history, Mr. James D. Phelan's achievements were an outstanding example of what an honest man can do in politics. First of all, I have endeavored to show his contributions to the city of San Francisco. There is hardly any field of San Francisco life in which James D. Phelan did not leave a tremendous influence. The politics of his term as mayor were a shining model of clean and progressive measures.

As senator he kept the interest of California at heart. Through his work at the World's Columbian Exposition, he made …

John G. Fee And Berea College, Flora Jones

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

When a student at Berea College it occurred to the writer that if the opportunity should ever present itself, she would be interested in knowing more concerning the early struggles and untiring labor of the men who had made possible such a great and unique institution of learning.

It is the aim of this paper to treat in a brief and concise way the development of this institution and in particular the part played by John G. Fee. Also it is hoped to furnish an account of the early struggles of this institution that will be of interest to the …

The First French Republic, Dorothy Conine Apr 1934

The First French Republic, Dorothy Conine

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is intended as a study of the first French Republic during the years of 1792 and 1795.

The writer might call it the Revolution itself, so completely were the years of violence under the Convention the outcome of the attempt to preserve the advantages the Constituent Assembly had gained. To understand the conditions which were outgrown and the origin and growth of the revolutionary spirit, seems, therefore, quite as necessary as to trace the history of the destruction of abuse and the struggle for liberties and rights.

While novelties of historical matters are always to be suspected, the …

Tennessee During Secession & Reconstruction, Edward Taylor Jun 1933

Tennessee During Secession & Reconstruction, Edward Taylor

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present work is intended as a survey of events and conditions in Tennessee during the decade from 1860 to 1870 when the entire nation was torn by sectional strife, racial antagonism, and economic and social disorder. The writer can make no pretension of having made a comprehensive or exhaustive study of the sources. That would involve a paper far beyond the scope of the present study. At best I have only scratched the surface; merely opened avenues for future study.
