Born in 1864, Cherry left his family farm at the age of 21 to pursue his own education and by 1892 become head of a school in Bowling Green that was in trouble financially and and also had a shrinking enrollment. He began the transformation of this school and it became his life's work. Many people have asked, “Is Kentucky as Southern State?” Being the borderland between the North and the South, the Commonwealth has been viewed as Southern, as part of the Midwest, and something completely unique. To define Kentucky as Southern, I have examined the literary works of different regional authors. The U.S. Government's Investigation Of E.B. Stahlman As An Enemy Alien: A Case Study Of Nativism In Nashville, Robert O'Brien

As a railroad executive for the Louisville and Nashville and then publisher for the Nashville Banner, Edward Bushrod Stahlman, a German immigrant, made many enemies. Stahlman's constant feuding with Luke Lea, who owned the rival Nashville Tennessean, led to an investigation of his citizenship during World War I. Hatred of Germans was at a fever pitch and not only did the Department of Justice examine Stahlman, who actually had been naturalized as a child, but the Tennessean also accused him of being a German propagandist.
