The Anchor, Volume 122.08: October 29, 2008, Hope College
The Anchor: 2008
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Looking Backward, Looking Forward: Puerto Ricans In The Quest For The New York City Mayoralty, José Cruz
Looking Backward, Looking Forward: Puerto Ricans In The Quest For The New York City Mayoralty, José Cruz
Policy Documents
This paper examines the history of Puerto Rican efforts to win the mayoralty of the city of New York, highlighting the 2005 election. By doing so, it seeks to fill a gap in the history of Puerto Rican political participation in New York. The struggle of Puerto Rican elites to win representa- tion at the highest level of office in the city is long-standing. The paper chronicles the circumstances and terms according to which they sought political incorporation at that level. . The paper looks critically at the issue of runoff elections. The role of money is examined through the …
“Art As Direct Political Action:” An Investigation Through Case Studies And Interviews, Emily Meinhardt
“Art As Direct Political Action:” An Investigation Through Case Studies And Interviews, Emily Meinhardt
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
In 1970, Artforum, an international magazine of contemporary art, conducted a survey of various important artists asking the following question: what is your position regarding the kinds of direct political action that should be taken by artists? The question was asked in relation to the “deepening political crisis in America,” the Vietnam War. The development of television brought images of war into American homes more dramatically and immediately than any previous conflict. Though the war was taking place abroad, the violence was made real to audiences, including artists, many of whom felt pressure to respond to the political situation. Around …
Past Meets Present: History Education In Northern Ireland, Will Ehrenfeld
Past Meets Present: History Education In Northern Ireland, Will Ehrenfeld
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The inevitable question as a society emerges from conflict is how to deal with the past. Commemorate and remember or forget and move on? More importantly, how does this choice affect the participants in the conflict and other members of society—how is commemoration or disregard transmitted to the population? Looking around the world at societies emerging from all types and degrees of conflict, divergent approaches to this seminal question are taken at every turn. Centrally, societies must decide how to deal with perpetrators of violence; South Africa may have the most famous method for dealing with victims and perpetrators of …

International Knowledge Professionals: Contemporary Career Concerns And Implications, Marian Crowley-Henry
Conference papers
This study supplements existing contemporary research on knowledge workers. It takes an interpretivist approach to represent and analyse a new breed and under-researched sub-category of international assignee termed ‘bounded transnationals’ by the author. In the context of this paper these can be simply described as internationally-located knowledge professionals. This sample has committed to living indefinitely in the host country as foreign residents where they are employed under local country contracts of employment. The paper explores how the sample perceives and makes sense of careers in the context of globalisation and change.

Young People On Remand, Mairéad Seymour, Michelle Butler
Reports
The aim of this study is to examine the services and supports required by young people to promote greater compliance with the conditions of bail and reduce the use of detention on remand. The research addresses three main areas: • to establish the service and support needs of young people by investigating the circumstances of their life circumstances; • to examine the specific services and supports required by young people and their families during the remand process, in the courtroom and in the period between adjournments; • to address the issues and barriers to delivering services and supports to young …
A Study Of Anti-Social Behaviour On Dublin Bus Routes, Kevin Scott
A Study Of Anti-Social Behaviour On Dublin Bus Routes, Kevin Scott
Dissertations
The area under investigation was the phenomenon of criminological behaviour occurring on Dublin Bus Routes. Research questions were based around: 1) what anti-social behaviour is occurring on buses, 2) when is this behaviour occurring, 3) who is perpetrating this behaviour and 4) how is anti-social behaviour on buses being tackled? Two problematic bus routes and one control route were selected based on geographic spread and the comparative ratio of criminal incidents involved (the 78A, 77 and the control case: 46A). A statistical analysis of existing information from Dublin Bus surrounding anti-social behaviour on these routes was conducted. The researcher then …

Locked Out: The 1905 Dispute Between The Agibsltu And The Master Builders Association, John Hogan
Articles
When the issue of a lockout in Dublin comes up for discussion, invariably, the Great Lockout of 1913 springs to mind. This event, in both its scale 4 and scope, has tended to crowd out the examination of all other lockouts that occurred in the city in the early years of the 20th century. Beside the Great Lockout contemporary industrial disputes have tended to pale in comparison. As a result of its magnitude, the 1913 lockout has provided a vast reservoir of research material that has been heavily mined. However, this concentration on 1913 could lead to the erroneous conclusion …
Articulating Identity: Refining Postcolonial And Whiteness Perspectives On Race Within Communication Studies, Gordon Alley-Young
Articulating Identity: Refining Postcolonial And Whiteness Perspectives On Race Within Communication Studies, Gordon Alley-Young
Publications and Research
This paper juxtaposes postcolonial and whiteness scholarship to identify gaps and clarify influences on critical race scholarship within communication studies. This paper considers the multiplicity of each perspective and identifies the focus on race and the body as communicative texts as a linkage that unites the three perspectives. How each perspective informs a communicative understanding of race is explored through the constructs of Cartesian dualism, performance, and the gaze. The paper concludes with suggestions for future directions for interrogating race within the communication discipline, including a consideration of how white privilege is extended to and assumed by individuals who are …

Young Adult Books Fiction Update, 2007-2008, Gregory A. Martin
Library Faculty Presentations
Most colleges and universities with teacher training programs have collections of children's and young adult books. In many cases, the librarians who are responsible for selecting these books have a number of other responsibilities as well. This workshop is designed for those busy librarians who are not always able to devote the time they would like to selecting young adult books. We will explore selected “best” young adult books published during 2007 and 2008.

Finding Balance And Identity: Second And Third Generation Immigrants In The Netherlands, Alexis Beveridge
Finding Balance And Identity: Second And Third Generation Immigrants In The Netherlands, Alexis Beveridge
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The Netherlands has a large population of Turkish and Moroccan immigrants. With a population of approximately 16.6 million, almost 20 percent of the population is non-indigenous. Turkish and Moroccan immigrants each represent approximately one tenth of the entire population, together accounting for one fifth of the immigrant population. The Netherlands began accepting Turkish and Moroccan immigrants in the 1970s. These immigrants were accepted as guest workers for manual labor jobs. Most historians agree that the first generation of Turkish and Moroccan immigrants did not intend to stay permanently in the Netherlands. Further, native Dutch people did not expect them to …
Hair Of The Frog And Other Empty Metaphors: The Play Element In Figurative Language, L. David Ritchie, Valrie Dyhouse
Hair Of The Frog And Other Empty Metaphors: The Play Element In Figurative Language, L. David Ritchie, Valrie Dyhouse
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this essay we discuss a class of apparently metaphorical idioms, exemplified by "fine as frog's hair," that do not afford any obvious interpretation, and appear to have originated, at least in part, in language play. We review recent trends in both play theory and metaphor theory, and show that a playful approach to language is often an important element in the use and understanding of metaphors (and idioms generally), even when metaphors can be readily interpreted by means of a vehicle-to-topic mapping. Based on this evidence we call for a more deliberate inclusion of language play in metaphor theory …

The spiritual practice of the Shaman is most likely the oldest spiritual tradition on Earth. Shamanism is a way in which humanity has sought a psychic connection to the world of healing, life and death, as well as a sense of social and individual balance. It is a complex psychological grammar that allows the Shaman to function in both the conventional and an alternative "spirit" view of reality. Shamanisn has been a part of American culture since the colonial settlement and continues today despite technology and modern scientific rationalism. This chapter is a brief social history of the African-American shamanic …
Women’S Careers Internationally: A Qualitative Study Of Female Western Knowledge Professionals Living In The South Of France, Marian Crowley-Henry
Women’S Careers Internationally: A Qualitative Study Of Female Western Knowledge Professionals Living In The South Of France, Marian Crowley-Henry
Conference papers
This paper is founded on a qualitative PhD study researching the careers of individuals who live outside their home country on a potentially permanent basis in the South of France. It interprets the careers of the females in the sample, and the findings highlight both the personal nature of careers and the permeable career/life boundary with the females ‘morphing’ their careers over time, as circumstances dictate and opportunities facilitate. The phenomenon of ‘morphing careers’ is identified in the literature as the protean career. Specific elements from the work/life trajectory influence women’s career choices at varying points in their life and …

La Cinematografia Nazionale Australiana Nella Seconda Metà Del Novecento E La Rappresentazione Del Fenomeno Migratorio Non Angloceltico, Gitano Rando
Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
Although a significant minority of Australia’s population is of non angloceltic origin, Australia’s national cinema has consistently understated the impact and the multiple ramifications of the migration experiences of the many ethnic groups constituting Australia society. Initially geared, in the 1950s, to projecting an image of Australia as an all-accepting earthly paradise, films and documentaries produced up to the end of the 1970s present themes that underscore the superiority of Australian values and the need for the many ethnic groups that have settled in the country to assimilate into mainstream society. It is only in the last part of the …

Macroeconomic Policy Change: Ireland In Comparative Perspective, John Hogan
Macroeconomic Policy Change: Ireland In Comparative Perspective, John Hogan
Articles
This paper sets out to develop an improved framework for examining critical junctures. This a priori framework is a significant improvement over existing critical juncture frameworks that lack any predictive element. It is an advance for historical institutionalism in particular, and political science in general. After the new framework is set out in detail here, it is tested. The framework is used to examine a number of potential critical junctures in macroeconomic policy, drawn from Ireland, Sweden, Britain, and America in the latter half of the twentieth century
