Expanding The Pool Of Volunteers: Enticing Ethnic Minorities To Become More Involved, Melanie J. Randle, Sara Dolnicar
Expanding The Pool Of Volunteers: Enticing Ethnic Minorities To Become More Involved, Melanie J. Randle, Sara Dolnicar
Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)
In Australia the value of volunteering runs into the tens of billions of dollars each year. The multicultural nature of Australia has resulted in greater heterogeneity amongst volunteers; however minorities are still under-represented in mainstream volunteering. Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour to structure the study, the volunteering behaviour of ethnic minorities is investigated. All three constructs are found to be relevant for volunteering; however, the role that each construct plays varies between ethnic groups. Findings are significant for managers trying to attract volunteers from different ethnic groups because marketing messages can be targeted to the factors most influential in …

The 1916 Easter Rising: A History Of Commemoration, Emily Litwin
The 1916 Easter Rising: A History Of Commemoration, Emily Litwin
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Before traveling to Ireland, I watched the film Michael Collins; aside from the single paragraph of text allocated to the 1916 Easter Rising in The Course of Irish History, the film shaped my understanding of the Irish fight for independence. As the semester progressed, this basic understanding evolved into a solid grasp of Irish history and politics. As a student of history with a specific interest in historiography, I aimed to structure my Independent Research Project (ISP) around Irish history so that I could delve deeper into my preferred field. Throughout the semester my intrigue piqued as I noticed how …

A Place In The World: Mh2o’S Construction Of A Peripheral Identity, Ryan Schutt
A Place In The World: Mh2o’S Construction Of A Peripheral Identity, Ryan Schutt
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Hip Hop and, more specifically, Rap music, has been a culture rooted in the notion of the social periphery, the section of society excluded from mainstream, capitalist, bourgeois society. It has historically been a way for this voiceless, disenfranchised, and alienated population to criticize, question, and protest its societal position. The Movimento do Hip-Hop Organizado uses this medium as a way of politicizing and mobilizing the excluded members of Brazilian society. Using Hip-Hop, the organization constructs a socially informed, politically aware, and critically conscious community that is united through their common identification with Hip-Hop culture and MH2O. The case is …

How Has Legal Marriage Affected The Experience Of Social Supports For Same-Sex Individuals Who Were Married In Massachusetts, Dawn N. Geller
How Has Legal Marriage Affected The Experience Of Social Supports For Same-Sex Individuals Who Were Married In Massachusetts, Dawn N. Geller
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study explored the experiences of the new population of individuals who married a same-sex partner since it was legal in Massachusetts. The study focused on the effect legal marriage had on their experiences of social supports. Seventy-three individuals responded to the on-line survey, 54 of which answered the essay question that contributed to the findings of this study. The findings of this study reflect that the experiences of individuals who have married a same-sex partner vary in part due to the social supports and levels of acceptance of their marriage from family, friends, coworkers, neighbors and other institutions. The …

Transcending Culture : The Universality Of Grief, Kelly Diane Meade
Transcending Culture : The Universality Of Grief, Kelly Diane Meade
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study explored how culture influences the grieving process. This study was undertaken in part to expand on the limited research on this topic. Some of the literature, including various studies, indicates that social context affects the experience and expression of grief (Catlin, 1992). Twelve individuals who had lost their "loved ones," defined by the researcher as a significant other, family member or close friend, at least two years but not longer than five years ago were interviewed for this study. Participation included answering questions regarding their experience of grief and various factors that influenced their grieving process. The results …

Integrating Spirituality And Psychotherapy: Ethical Issues And Principles To Consider, Thomas G. Plante
Psychology
Professional and scientific psychology appears to have rediscovered spirituality and religion during recent years, with a large number of conferences, seminars, workshops, books, and special issues in major professional journals on spirituality and psychology integration. The purpose of this commentary is to highlight some of the more compelling ethical principles and issues to consider in spirituality and psychology integration with a focus on psychotherapy. This commentary will use the American Psychological Association's (2002) Ethics Code and more specifically, the RRICC model of ethics that readily applies to various mental health ethics codes across the world. The RRICC model highlights the …
Fracture Biomechanics Of The Human Skeleton, Anne M. Kroman
Fracture Biomechanics Of The Human Skeleton, Anne M. Kroman
Doctoral Dissertations
Trauma analysis is a growing area of physical and forensic anthropology. The analysis of fracture patterns is useful in determining cause and manner of death, as well as making inferences about past populations. Traditionally, anthropologists have categorized bone trauma into the discrete categories of blunt, ballistic, and sharp trauma. While these descriptors provide a practical approach, anthropologists need to change the way that trauma is perceived and analysis of fractures is conducted. Bone trauma is best viewed as a continuum (rather than discrete independent categories), with the variables of force, acceleration/deceleration, and surface area of impacting interface governing the appearance …
A Question Of Culture For Overweight Individuals, Heather A. Macdonald
A Question Of Culture For Overweight Individuals, Heather A. Macdonald
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study was designed using flexible research methods to explore the experiences and beliefs of overweight individuals in a cultural context. Two research questions were undertaken: the first being Do overweight individuals experience a subculture?, and the second exploring How do overweight individuals' experiences of oppression relate to whether they have a subculture or not? As an analysis of the literature revealed, the overweight population's oppression and stigmatization is often unrecognized within our greater society. With millions of Americans being classified as overweight this population is increasing in number, warranting further notice within social research. This exploratory study includes …
