The first statement reflects one student's vision of her world and her solution to one problem in that world. Written in an essay which asked white students for their reactions to having Vietnamese in their school, the statement reveals a limited view of the world and possibly a parroting of community rhetoric. The second statement is an oral response by the same student taped during her reading of a novel which dealt with ethnic issues. Her revised perception indicating the need for a new look at other ethnic groups, rather than an expulsion of them from the country, suggests the …

The following abstracts were submitted for presentation at the annual Conference, and the respondent comments reflect the direction of discussion at several of the sessions. The intersection of race, class, and gender was the primary focus of the Conference. Spiritual dismemberment, which many associate with the plight of disinherited Native Americans, has dislocated millions of others in this country as well. Teaching multi-ethnic literature, I note in particular streams of students who like the narrator of Oritz's poem are lonely for an authentic connection to a personal history. Throughout the term, they read selections which extol or dramatize the palpable struggles of characters who have a strong bond with ethnic traditions. They attend class surrounded by identifiable, certifiable ethnics. They listen to the instructor hold forth on the apocalyptic possibilities open to any who have access to these worldviews. …

Pasta Or Paradigm: The Place Of Italian-American Women In Popular Film, Daniel Golden

The year is 1930, the film is Little Caesar, and Hollywood begins its long and often irresponsible tradition of portraying the Italian-American male as gangster, thug, sociopath. The gangster genre has traditionally focused on male activities--men in groups, their rites of passage into underworld manhood, and their perverted American dreams of success achieved through community extortion, syndicated corruption, and blood murder. But hidden in the story of Caesar Enrico Bandello, who has justifiably been called our "archetypal" film gangster, we also discover fragmentary, but important, early portrayals of the Italian woman in America.

Abstracts Of Papers Presented At The 7th Annual Conference On Ethnic And Minority Studies

This paper reviews some of the most salient aspects of E. M. Rogg's (1974) seminal work, The Assimilation of Cuban Exiles; The Role of Community and Class--a sociological study of the Cuban community in the town of West New York in northeastern New Jersey. Although taking issue with some of the author's theses, this paper elaborates on other findings of the book in question by means of more recent participant-observation field research in the same neighborhood. For example, the new data confirms Rogg's proposition that the organized ethnic minority helps to direct the process of acculturation, though slowly.
