Selling The Southern Highlands: Tourism And Community Development In The Mountain South, Christopher Brenden Martin

Doctoral Dissertations

Focusing on Buncombe County, North Carolina, Blount County, Tennessee, and Sevier County, Tennessee as representative resort areas in the mountain South, this study recognizes tourism as a central factor in the historical development of the region's cultural identity, economy, and landscape. In studying the variant development patterns of resort communities in the southern highlands, it is apparent that tourism has simultaneously produced both continuity and change as well as positive and negative consequences. On the one hand, tourism has often served as a source of economic, cultural, and environmental preservation. Tourism has helped to maintained cultural distinctiveness, historical identity ...

The Bermudian Creek Tories, James P. Myers Jr.

Adams County History

The history of the American Revolution which most Americans have learned and which is everyday reinforced in the public media is essentially but one of several competing interpretations of that conflict. We rarely think about this, so successfully has that particular history taken root in our culture. Common sense, however, should caution us that the British also possess a version or versions which differ in important ways from ours. The French, our allies during the Revolution, offer yet another construction, one stressing that war's place in their own long history of conflict with Great Britain. And had the northeastern ...

Dissertations and Theses

This study traces the career of Robert Francis Kelley and his influence on American-Russian Relations during the nonrecognition period (1917-1933). The focus of this examination is Kelley's role in formulating, implementing, and sustaining America's anti-communist policy developed and solidified during the 1920s and 1930s. Particular attention is given to the senate recognition hearing of 1924, Kelley's training of future diplomats (George Kennan, Charles Bohlen, et al.), and his contributions to the preparations leading to the United States' recognition of Russia in 1933. Feeding A Family Of Five: Role Playing The Great Depression, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg Dec 1996

Feeding A Family Of Five: Role Playing The Great Depression, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg

Pamela Riney-Kehrberg

In the spring of 1989, I drove hundreds of miles of back roads in Kansas, interviewing survivors ofthe dust bowl and Great Depression for my doctoral dissertation. I asked these people, ranging in age from their mid-sixties to nineties, many questions about their lives during the I 930s, including work and attitudes toward federal aid, and why they had stayed in Kansas when so many had left and gone to California. I also asked a number of questions about the "nuts and bolts" of life during hard times, such as how they or their parents made family food dollars stretch ...
