Jacobite Past, Loyalist Present, Michael Newton
Jacobite Past, Loyalist Present, Michael Newton
e-Keltoi: Journal of Interdisciplinary Celtic Studies
This article is the first analysis of Gaelic sources relating to the involvement of Scottish Highlanders in warfare in North America from the opening of the French and Indian War to the end of the American Revolution. A careful reading of these primary sources — almost totally unknown to historians — can provide a unique window on the sentiments and reasoning of Highlanders regarding these conflicts. This analysis of contemporary Gaelic poetry demonstrates that there is a high degree of continuity and consistency in the ideological framework of the lines of political argumentation from the Jacobite era through the end …

Cherokee Indian Removal: The Treaty Of New Echota And General Winfield Scott., Ovid Andrew Mcmillion
Cherokee Indian Removal: The Treaty Of New Echota And General Winfield Scott., Ovid Andrew Mcmillion
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Treaty of New Echota was signed by a small group of Cherokee Indians and provided for the removal of the Cherokees from their lands in the southeastern United States. This treaty was secured by dishonest means and, despite the efforts of Chief John Ross to prevent the removal of the Cherokees from their homeland to west of the Mississippi River, the terms of the treaty were executed. In May of 1838, under the command of General Winfield Scott, the removal of the Cherokees commenced. Scott encountered many difficulties including inefficient commissioners and superintendents, drought, disease, and the wavering policy …

Mellie Dunham: A Remembrance Norway Maine Summer Festival, July 2003, David Sanderson
Mellie Dunham: A Remembrance Norway Maine Summer Festival, July 2003, David Sanderson
Maine History Documents
The story of Mellie Dunham continues to fascinate, even some seventy-five years after the events. The tale of the 72-year-old country fiddler invited to play for Henry Ford, made famous by the media, then hugely successful as a vaudeville performer, seems almost too perfect to be true. But it all happened, and it was Mellie’s own grace and lack of pretense, a genuineness that inspired the public’s affection for him, that was as much as anything else responsible for the events of 1925 and 1926.
This booklet was created to mark Mellie’s 150th birthday, July 29, 2003. We call it …
Vanishing Point: An Examination Of Some Consequences Of Globalization For Contemporary Irish Film, Sean Crosson
Vanishing Point: An Examination Of Some Consequences Of Globalization For Contemporary Irish Film, Sean Crosson
e-Keltoi: Journal of Interdisciplinary Celtic Studies
In the following article, some films produced with the support of Bord Scannán na hÉireann (The Irish Film Board) since its reconstitution in 1993 are examined in light of the work of global anthropologist Arjun Appadurai and his theory of global cultural flows. I suggest that cinema, primarily of Hollywood origin, has had a notable influence on the development of Irish society and Irish film. Contemporary Irish film itself also reflects the failure of Irish history to excite the imagination of Ireland’s youth as effectively as the seductive depictions of America’s past as mediated through the Western and gangster films. …
Tip O’Neill: Irish-American Representative Man, Shaun O'Connell
Tip O’Neill: Irish-American Representative Man, Shaun O'Connell
New England Journal of Public Policy
Thomas P. “Tip” O’Neill, Man of the House as he aptly called himself in his 1987 memoir, stood as the quintessential Irish-American representative man for half of the twentieth century. O’Neill, often misunderstood as a parochial, Irish Catholic party pol, was a shrewd, sensitive, and idealistic man who came to stand for a more inclusive and expansive sense of his region, his party, and his church. O’Neill’s impressive presence both embodied the clichés of the Irish-American character and transcended its stereotypes by articulating a noble vision of inspired duty, determined responsibility, and joy in living. There was more to Tip …

Regulating Babylon: Religion And Rebellion In Pre-Revolutionary North Carolina, Sarah E. King '03
Regulating Babylon: Religion And Rebellion In Pre-Revolutionary North Carolina, Sarah E. King '03
Honors Projects, History
Past historians have situated the Regulator conflict in largely economic or social terms. James Whittenburg and others claim that at the time of the Regulation, a new and vast social division was present in backcountry society. The established backcountry settlers-the agrarian, yeoman farmers of Hermon Husbands' ilk-resented their recent displacement by mercantile and political interests. The Regulation, then, simply "crystallized widespread anxiety over the swift economic and political changes taking place in the piedmont." The Regulators used fleeting issues of the moment to rectify their lessening influence in North Carolina. Rachel Klein similarly argues in Unification of a Slave State …
Delno C. West Award Winner: Using And Abusing Delegated Power In Elizabethan England, James H. Forse
Delno C. West Award Winner: Using And Abusing Delegated Power In Elizabethan England, James H. Forse
Quidditas
Queen Elizabeth's government, like most early modern European governments, was one that sought to extend its influence and power throughout the realm. But at the same time it possessed minimal financial resources and coercive machinery of power, and therefore, while it issued mandates, it had to depend upon local officials and individuals to whom it delegated power. Nor did Elizabeth’s government have any machinery of oversight to “watch-dog” those delegated powers. Only when issues came to the attention of the Privy Council after-the-fact did the government, occasionally, intervene to redress abuses of those delegated powers. Two areas in which these …

Stories Of Canada: National Identity In Late-Nineteenth-Century English-Canadian Fiction, Elizabeth Hedler
Stories Of Canada: National Identity In Late-Nineteenth-Century English-Canadian Fiction, Elizabeth Hedler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The search for a national identity has been a central concern of English-Canadian culture since the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. In the late nineteenth century, English-Canadian concerns about Canadian identity and the need for distinctively Canadian stories resulted in the creation of a body of fiction that attempted to define Canadian nationhood and identity by depicting Canadian scenes, people, and situations. In the late nineteenth century, writers of fiction focused on defining the impact of Canada's unique land and heritage upon Canadian identity. Based on an extensive reading of these novels, this dissertation explores the way …
History Of Veazie, Maine, Jean Hamilton
History Of Veazie, Maine, Jean Hamilton
Maine Town Documents
Veazie, the smallest town in Penobscot County (consisting of four square miles or 2,560 acres), is about a mile north of Bangor. Until its incorporation in 1853, Veazie was a part of Bangor, known both as Ward 7 and as North Bangor. Its early history must therefore include some of the story of Bangor and early settlements and/or fortifications along the Penobscot River.

Taking A Stand: Criticisms To British Policy By European Dissidents And The Settler Responses In Kenya During The Mau Mau Crisis, Courtney Scheskie
WWU Honors College Senior Projects
Kenya in the 1950’s was a turbulent colony full of racial, political and economic conflict. Kenya had been within the British sphere of influence since 1886 and was not given its independence until 1963. By the 1920s Africans began demanding more political and economic rights while the settlers called for more control over their African labor and an expanded color- bar. By 1952, the situation had reached a climax, and British officials began an armed conflict with those they termed as Mau Mau, who referred to themselves as the Land Freedom Army. This struggle has been viewed as the catalyst …

Beyond The Solid South: Southern Members Of Congress And The Vietnam War, Mark David Carson
Beyond The Solid South: Southern Members Of Congress And The Vietnam War, Mark David Carson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
From the beginning of America's involvement in Vietnam in 1943 to its disastrous end in 1975, southern members of Congress exerted a significant influence on and expressed divergent opinions about Cold War foreign policy. In part because of an enormous increase in military spending in the South fueled by prominent membership on military committees, congressional hawks were more inclined to support military aid for countries fighting communism and accept military over civilian advice in prosecuting the Cold War. Hawkish southerners embraced containment wholeheartedly, exhibited an intense patriotism, and concerned themselves with upholding personal and national honor. Therefore, with some prominent …
