Space-Time Pattern Of Underground Radon Emission And The Influence Of Environmental Factors Using Sensor Networks, Sumya Tasnim

Geosciences Theses

Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. There is a lack of information regarding underground radon concentrations at a local scale. This research assessed the underground radon emissions from 30 sensors from May 2022 to January 2023. This thesis utilized the emerging hotspot technique to identify the hotspots and coldspots of underground radon concentrations. It then evaluated their correlations with temperature, humidity, air pressure, CO2, and volatile organic compound (VOC). The results indicated that the western side of the testbed and the warmer season had more hotspots than the rest of the area and colder …

Integration Of Misaligned Spatial Data For Evidence-Based Planning And Disaster Risk Assessment, Faris Hawamdeh Dec 2023

Integration Of Misaligned Spatial Data For Evidence-Based Planning And Disaster Risk Assessment, Faris Hawamdeh

Computer Science Dissertations

Disasters, whether natural or anthropogenic, can be catastrophic and deadly. Without readiness and a well-planned response from local agencies and public health authorities, the number of casualties and the damage to the infrastructure can have long-term effects on the economy and the well-being of the community and country. The main obstacle to developing robust disaster plans and estimating hazard impacts is the availability of region-specific data. This dissertation encompassed the creation of a data repository of geospatial and demographic data in support of emergency response and risk assessment tools such as Re-PLAN and RAMP. Several hazard specific geospatial data types …

Distribution Of Contamination Sources In The Atlanta Metropolitan Area Along The Upper Chattahoochee River Basin: An Environmental Justice Focus, Ahmadou T. Deme

Geosciences Theses

Over the last few decades, the rapid expansion of the Atlanta urban area has led to the increase of the number of sources of pollutions around the area and the level of pollution in the Chattahoochee River. This research analyzed the change in the distribution of sources of contamination over time and space, and evaluated their impact on environmental justice in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The results indicate contaminated areas increased from 2000 to 2019, spreading from the central metropolitan area to the south along the Chattahoochee River. The Box and whisker plots indicated existence of spatio-temporal variations in the …

Space, Settlement, And Environment: Detecting Undocumented Maya Archaeological Sites With Remotely Sensed Data, Andrew Vaughan Aug 2015

Space, Settlement, And Environment: Detecting Undocumented Maya Archaeological Sites With Remotely Sensed Data, Andrew Vaughan

Anthropology Theses

This study utilizes an integrated remote sensing approach to augment settlement pattern research in the Yalahau Region of northern Quintana Roo, Mexico. The region has a long history of human occupation and an environment ranging from coasts, freshwater wetlands, forests, to fields and towns all above a porous karst geology. By utilizing various sensors (LiDAR, GeoEye and Landsat) and collection methods (satellite, aerial) as well as post-processing (band combinations, component analyses and indices) and cross-referencing the data, it is possible to generate a signature, which strongly correlates with evidence of prehistoric occupation. Field verification of a selection of identified signatures …

The Implementation And Education Of Geographic Information Systems In A Local Government For Municipal Planning: A Case Study Of Dangriga, Belize, Craig Skelton

Geosciences Theses

Implementing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in a developing country can improve spatial planning and decision-making. Utilizing a Participatory GIS framework of maximizing community empowerment and limiting marginalization, this thesis research explores the barriers associated with implementing GIS in Dangriga, Belize and how to overcome those barriers. The research included the identification of local needs that could benefit from the use of GIS, the collection of local data through group and individual data collections, and the utilization of locally collected data to conduct GIS training sessions. It was learned that Dangriga faces many barriers found in other developing countries: institutional inertia, …

Gis Least-Cost Route Modeling Of The Proposed Trans-Anatolian Pipeline In Western Turkey, Austin Kelly May 2014

Gis Least-Cost Route Modeling Of The Proposed Trans-Anatolian Pipeline In Western Turkey, Austin Kelly

Geosciences Theses

The routing of the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline plays an important role in the future energy security of the European Union. The natural gas pipeline is planned to run from the natural gas fields in the Caspian Sea through Turkey. This project is a case study for a Geographic Information System (GIS) least-cost route analysis of a section of the proposed pipeline in Western Turkey. The route analysis comprised of weighting multiple types of criteria in a compiled risk assessment map that was analyzed by a least-cost algorithm to display the least hazardous route through the study area. Multiple varieties of criteria …

Evaluating The Performance Of A Filtered Area Weighting Method In Population Estimation For Public Health Studies, Andrew Chiang Aug 2013

Evaluating The Performance Of A Filtered Area Weighting Method In Population Estimation For Public Health Studies, Andrew Chiang

Geosciences Theses

Areal interpolation is a geospatial analysis method that allows researchers to estimate the incidence of a phenomenon in one set of areal units given data based on different areal units. One practice implemented in conjunction with areal interpolation is known as filtered area weighting, in which ancillary data is introduced to exclude specific areas from the areal units based on certain criteria, thus providing a more accurate representation of population distribution. This thesis examines the benefits that filtered area weighting can provide to population estimation using a hospital accessibility case study. The study shows that filtered area weighting does not …

Reclaiming A Sense Of Place: Geospatial Technologies And The Flat Rock Cemetery Project, Jeffrey Glover, Kathryn Jackson, Johnny Waits Jan 2010

Reclaiming A Sense Of Place: Geospatial Technologies And The Flat Rock Cemetery Project, Jeffrey Glover, Kathryn Jackson, Johnny Waits

Geosciences Faculty Publications

The Flat Rock community in southern DeKalb County, Georgia (just outside Atlanta) is one of the oldest continually-occupied African-American communities in Georgia. Although history shows that many African-American communities in the South were broken apart as former slaves migrated north in search of jobs and a more equitable life, Flat Rock remained an intact community. This was largely due to the efforts of individuals who were able to purchase land and later sell it in small parcels to fellow community members. Proximity—both to ancestors and significant places—is a cross-culturally important component to the creation of a sense of community. Placed …
