Value Added Products From Nonconventional Agricultural Biomass Waste Through Thermochemical Transformation, Nicolas A. Sarmiento Feb 2023

Value Added Products From Nonconventional Agricultural Biomass Waste Through Thermochemical Transformation, Nicolas A. Sarmiento

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The alteration of temperature patterns around the world has become noticeable in the recent decade. Sea level rise, wildfires, and high temperatures have made people realize that climate change is affecting humans more tangibly than ever. Therefore, the United Nations have pushed to make policies to mitigate this problematic situation. This research investigated the production of biochar from agricultural waste through pyrolysis for fighting climate change and adding value to waste. Experiments in a laboratory scale reactor were conducted to obtain yields of pyrolytic products. Then, analysis of products provided data for characterization and the LCA of the tomato plant …

The Race Toward Carbon Neutral Ecotourism: Leveraging Life Cycle Analysis And Natural Climate Solutions For A Community Adventure Event, Ted Tarricone Jan 2023

The Race Toward Carbon Neutral Ecotourism: Leveraging Life Cycle Analysis And Natural Climate Solutions For A Community Adventure Event, Ted Tarricone

WWU Graduate School Collection

Global tourism is an interconnected framework of multiple industries that is influenced by and has impacts on economic, social, and environmental structures. Currently, tourism accounts for roughly 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions, which is expected to grow with industry expansion. To develop a scalable system for ecotourism assessment, emission reduction, and solutions to meet carbon neutrality, a small (n=3894 participants) adventure relay race named Ski to Sea in Bellingham, WA was studied. A life cycle analysis (LCA) conducted on the race showed similar proportional results to other tourism LCAs, where transport made up over 80% of the 325 tonnes …

Life Cycle Assessment Of Air Classification As A Sulfur Mitigation Technology In Pine Residue Feedstocks, Ashlee Edmonson Jan 2023

Life Cycle Assessment Of Air Classification As A Sulfur Mitigation Technology In Pine Residue Feedstocks, Ashlee Edmonson

Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering

Sulfur accumulation during biofuel production is pollutive, toxic to conversion catalysts, and causes the premature breakdown of processing equipment. Air classification is an effective preprocessing technology for ash and sulfur removal from biomass feedstocks. A life cycle assessment (LCA) sought to understand the environmental impacts of implementing air classification as a sulfur-mitigation technique for pine residues. Energy demand and material balance for preprocessing were simulated using SimaPro and the Argonne National Laboratory’s GREET model, specifically focusing on comparing the global warming potential (GWP) of grid electricity versus bioelectricity scenarios. Overall, the grid electricity scenario had a GWP impact over 7 …

Biomass Gasification: An Alternative Solution To Animal Waste Management, Hanjing Wu May 2013

Biomass Gasification: An Alternative Solution To Animal Waste Management, Hanjing Wu

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The overall goal of this research was to evaluate gasification of animal waste as an alternative manure management strategy, from the standpoints of syngas production and biochar application.

To meet the overall objective, the thermogravimetric characteristics of dairy manure, as a thermochemical conversion feedstock, were studied firstly. Then, gasification technology was applied to dairy manure and feedlot manure using a fluidized-bed laboratory-scale gasifier. In addition, biochar derived from the feedlot manure was examined for its effects on nutrient leaching as a soil amendment. Finally, a life cycle assessment was conducted to evaluate greenhouse gas emissions of two feedlot manure management …
