The objectives of this research were:(a)to study the current situation of mental health promotion for the aging population of Loei Province, (b)to develop activities to promote the mental health of that population using the public participation approach, and (c) to assess the mental health condition of the aging population in that province after the elderly peoples'participation in the proposed health promotion activities. Much has been written about Black men over the years and in different institutional contexts (e.g., community colleges, predominantly White institutions [PWIs], and historically Black colleges and universities). However, very little of this research has emphasized how the intersecting identities of Black men shape their experiences in higher education. To this end, this article draws from intersectionality and counternarratives, both of which has roots in critical race theory (CRT), to discuss how race, class, and gender informs the experiences of two Black males enrolled in a PWI. In India’s northwestern region of Ladakh, the linkage between reproduction, politics, and fertility is both complicated and contested, evident in increasing population discourses and the re-emergence of a Buddhist pronatalist movement. This paper examines the impacts of population discourses and pronatalism on women’s reproductive decision-making, as well as on the delivery of healthcare throughout Ladakh. Population discourses currently circulating produce two reproductive subjects—the “hyper-fertile Muslim woman” and the “vulnerable Buddhist”—both of which have been central in revitalizing Buddhist pronatalism. Data collected through a hospital-based survey and interviews shows that fertility behavior is shaped by religious interpretations, political mobilization, and pressure …

Trauma is a substantial threat to public health. As such, significant effort has been exerted into developing interventions which mitigate the consequences of trauma. Trauma-informed practice (TIP) aims to alleviate the effects of trauma by building policies and practices focused on safety, trust, transparency, support, collaboration, and empowerment. This study investigated how individual-level factors, including readiness for organizational change, perceived benefit of TIP training, and personal trauma history affect one’s ability to apply a TIP lens in a sample (n =100) of members of a graduate-level college. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide, necessitating a high demand for cardiac surgery. A unique stressor for cardiac surgery is an increased surgical stress response involving hyperglycemia. Perioperative hyperglycemia contributes to adverse postoperative outcomes following cardiac surgery. Current evidence examines blood glucose control and its effect on adverse postoperative outcomes, including sternal wound infections, acute kidney injury, prolonged mechanical ventilation, and an increased length of stay in the intensive care unit. Despite the link between hyperglycemia and poor postoperative outcomes, most facilities lack standardized guidelines for the perioperative management of blood glucose levels in cardiac surgery patients. …

Obesity predisposes patients to heightened risks of adverse outcomes following surgery, including residual neuromuscular blockade and postoperative complications. The administration of non-depolarizing neuromuscular agents (NMBAs) is fundamental for muscle relaxation and optimal surgical conditions. However, the subsequent reversal of these blockers with agents like sugammadex or neostigmine is crucial to mitigate these risks. While sugammadex is recognized as a clinically superior choice due to its rapid and more complete reversal, its extensive use is often limited by cost, presenting challenges in obese patients who already face increased susceptibility to complications. In the United States, the aging population and high rates of cardiovascular disease leads to increased cardiothoracic surgeries. Analgesia for cardiac surgeries often involves high-dose opioids. However, with an ever-increasing opioid epidemic and adverse effects on the postoperative healing process, recent literature seeks to decrease opioid consumption by utilizing alternative methods of analgesia. The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists recommends the use of regional anesthesia techniques to reduce the incidence of undertreated postoperative pain that can occur from opioid-sparing methods of analgesia. Preoperative anxiety is a problem that occurs frequently in pediatric patients. Preoperative anxiety creates physical and psychological changes that impact a child’s surgical experience. Pediatric patients who experience preoperative anxiety may also experience prolonged postoperative care, long-term psychological complications, and increased postoperative pain. Sedating medications are often administered to prevent and treat preoperative anxiety. Commonly, midazolam is administered intranasally to prevent preoperative anxiety. Midazolam increases the risk of cognitive impairment and respiratory depression. Dexmedetomidine is an effective alternative to midazolam. Dexmedetomidine is a highly selective alpha-2 agonist and provides arousable sedation without respiratory depression. Dexmedetomidine is safe and effective at …

Neuraxial anesthesia including epidural, spinal, and combined spinal-epidural, is used with 65% of parturients in the United States for the management of pain and discomfort. Conventional landmark palpation has been the mainstay technique for neuraxial anesthesia, but unfamiliar spinal anatomy can lead to incomplete blockade or an increased incidence of complications. Scoliosis causes lateral curvature and rotation of the spine leading to arthritis and soft tissue changes that can present obscure anatomical landmarks, cause difficulty in needle passage, and result in inadequacy of local anesthetic efficacy. Pain is detrimental to the patient experience, and poor patient satisfaction results in revenue loss for hospitals. Unintended intraoperative awareness is a traumatizing complication of general anesthesia. This negative outcome affects 0.1-0.2% of all patients undergoing general anesthesia. Patients at higher risk for this experience include those undergoing emergency surgery, traumas, cesarian sections, those on cardiopulmonary bypass, those with substance use disorder, and those undergoing total-intravenous anesthesia (TIVA). This high-risk population is affected by unintended intraoperative awareness 1% of the time. The bispectral index (BIS) monitor has been proposed as a tool to decrease the incidence of unintended intraoperative awareness. Ventral hernia repairs are the only definitive treatment for umbilical or abdominal hernias. These procedures are prevalent and often lifesaving but also carry high risks of adverse effects. The prevalence of AS may increase with the aging population and the widespread availability of diagnostic capabilities like echocardiography. This dissertation used a qualitative analysis methodology to study the contributions of parenting styles and peer relationships on the emotional expressivity of second generation Asian Indian-Americans. Seven participants participated in a 60 - 90 minute long semi-structured interview and the content was analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Most previous research regarding this topic has been conducted on White American or European individuals and does not take into consideration the many intersectionalities that second-generation Indian-Americans hold. Does Self-Care Moderate The Association Between Adverse Childhood Experiences, Trauma Symptoms, And Parental Reflective Functioning?, Vinaya Thomas

Unresolved adverse and traumatic experiences in parents can amplify the risk of perpetuating intergenerational transmission of trauma. Parents’ positive and adaptive practices such as self-care might act as a protective factor against this ripple effect. This study investigated whether self-care moderated the relationship between parental ACEs, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and parental reflective functioning in mothers who are experiencing high psychosocial stress (n = 59) residing in rural Appalachia. Within our sample, there was no statistically significant linear relationship between our predictors, ACE score and PTSD symptoms, and our outcome of interest, maternal pre-mentalizing. Background: While triple anti-retroviral therapy (ART) has improved HIV-infected children surviving into adolescence and adulthood, these children remain vulnerable to HIV-related psychological disturbance due to both the direct HIV infection effects on the brain and indirect effects related to coping with a range of medical, psychological and social stresses associated with HIV, which makes it vital to identify their mental health needs. This study reports faculty experiences regarding the discovery of scholarly content, highlighting similarities and differences across a range of academic disciplines. The authors interviewed twenty-five faculty members at a public, high-research university in the Midwest to explore the intersections of discovery, browsing, and format from diverse disciplinary perspectives. Although most participants rely on similar discovery tools such as library catalogs and databases and Google Scholar, their discovery techniques varied according to the discipline and type of research being done. Browsing is not a standard method for discovery, but it is still done selectively and strategically by some scholars. Journal articles …

Typically, attachment theory has been studied and explored with western populations. Individuals seeking mental health treatment within the United States include western and nonwestern cultural groups and research, theories and interventions that apply to diverse populations are necessary. Attachment relationships are often a part of, or reasons for clients to seek therapy either overtly or covertly, thus allowing research on attachment to better inform treatment plans and practice. Background: Dementia and hearing loss are both prevalent, age-related conditions and recent research has established a correlation between the two. Audiological evaluations of persons with dementia are important due to a likely comorbidity of dementia and hearing loss, the detrimental effect that hearing loss has on cognition and cognitive tests, and because the similar presentation of the two conditions can cause hearing loss to be overlooked. Stories are powerful tools used for centuries to entertain, teach, empower, and build community. Neuroscience research shows that stories impact the brain in ways that allow us to increase empathy and connect with people (What Happens in the Brain When We Hear Stories?, n.d.; Yang, 2014; Zak, 2015). This study involved an evaluation of teacher experiences within their districts, schools, and unions across the United States. The primary research question was: How are teachers currently experiencing the relationship between their unions, districts, and administrators and what opportunities exist to improve cooperation and shared ownership between those groups? The study used a mixed methods approach by gathering quantitative data in the form of a survey and qualitative data through open-ended responses on the survey as well as interviews with seven teachers.
