Building And Using Digital Libraries For Etds, Edward A. Fox

The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the high value of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), the global collection has seen limited use. To extend such use, a new approach to building digital libraries (DLs) is needed. Fortunately, recent decades have seen that a vast amount of “gray literature” has become available through a diverse set of institutional repositories as well as regional and national libraries and archives. Most of the works in those collections include ETDs and are often freely available in keeping with the open-access movement, but such access is limited by the services of supporting information systems. As explained through a set of ...

Demystifying The Scholarly Publishing Landscape, Eleta Exline, Emily Poworoznek, Patricia Condon

University Library Scholarship

The scholarly publishing landscape has grown exponentially in size, scope and complexity within the last decade. Since the number and type of publishing outlets have exploded, researchers now need to consider practical and ethical issues such as predatory journals, open access, preprints, publishing data and sponsor obligations when making publication decisions. Further, these issues may be compounded by interdisciplinary research collaborations. Presenters will provide an overview of the contemporary scholarly publishing landscape and the different components. They will also help researchers identify key questions to ask during different stages of the research process, highlight differences that may bear on interdisciplinary ...

Institutional Digital Repositories: A Systematic Review Of Literature, Bijan Kumar Roy

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Institutional Digital Repositories (IDRs) throughout the World are at a critical point in their development. The barriers are multifaceted and derive from the different stakeholders such as organization, funding body, publishers, users, academicians, administrators, and the governmental policies. The problems that have been identified after reviewing existing literatures are basically three folds viz. technical (hardware, software, open standard), non-technical (administrative, policy issue) and cultural (social acceptance, advocacy and promotion etc). The main objective of the study is to discuss several key parameters that are required to be considered before developing institute-specific IDR. Here, the following four issues viz. advocacy and ...

Shares Of Water Stock In Utah: Personal Property Or Real Estate?, Michael P. Affleck Feb 2021

Shares Of Water Stock In Utah: Personal Property Or Real Estate?, Michael P. Affleck

Utah Law Review

Utah deserts supply the state with exquisite beauty and are a definitive part of Utah’s identity. However, a consequence of this arid beauty is aridity itself. Because Utah is one of the driest states in the nation, water is an important resource. Accordingly, Utah legislators have enacted statutes that ensure that those who own water will use it beneficially and that ownership of water can be transferred easily from one owner to another. Water ownership is categorized as either ownership of a water right or a share of water stock. This Note focuses on the need for a resolution ...

(v) What practical strategies can help reduce biases and morally dismissive attitudes toward invertebrates?

Current Market Rates For Scholarly Publishing Services, Alexander Grossman, Björn Brembs Jan 2021

Current Market Rates For Scholarly Publishing Services, Alexander Grossman, Björn Brembs

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

For decades, the supra-inflation increase of subscription prices for scholarly journals has concerned scholarly institutions. After years of fruitless efforts to solve this “serials crisis”, open access has been proposed as the latest potential solution. However, the prices for open access publishing are also high and are rising well beyond inflation. What has been missing from the public discussion so far is a quantitative approach to determine the actual costs of efficiently publishing a scholarly article using state-of-the-art technologies, such that informed decisions can be made as to appropriate price levels. Here we provide a granular, step-by-step calculation of the ...

Open Access: “Information Wants To Be Free”?, Richard Poynder

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The main points made in this document:

- Internet mantras like information wants to be free misled OA advocates about what is possible in an online world. Amongst other things, these mantras led to the mistaken belief that publishing would be very much cheaper on the internet.

- BOAI was intended to achieve three things: to resolve the longstanding problems of affordability, accessibility, and equity that have long dogged scholarly communication.

- It now seems unlikely that the affordability and equity problems will be resolved, which will impact disproportionately negatively on those in the Global South. And if the geopolitical situation worsens, solving ...

Emergence Of Organisms., Andrea Roli, Stuart A Kauffman

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Since early cybernetics studies by Wiener, Pask, and Ashby, the properties of living systems are subject to deep investigations. The goals of this endeavour are both understanding and building: abstract models and general principles are sought for describing organisms, their dynamics and their ability to produce adaptive behavior. This research has achieved prominent results in fields such as artificial intelligence and artificial life. For example, today we have robots capable of exploring hostile environments with high level of self-sufficiency, planning capabilities and able to learn. Nevertheless, the discrepancy between the emergence and evolution of life and artificial systems is still ...

Towards Institutional Repository Sustainability: Lecturers Awareness, Patronage And Content Submission To The University Of Cape Coast Repository, Ebenezer Martin-Yeboah, Christopher Kwame Filson, Kwame Boohene

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Having been hardest hit by the crisis of inadequate funding for journal subscription, academic institutions, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa have embraced open access institutional repositories as alternative means of scholarly communication. Upon the embrace of this approach to knowledge sharing, the University of Cape Coast’s Institutional Repository, UCCSpace, like most academic repositories, has had to contend with the issues of sustainability in the area of content recruitment. The study thus assesses lecturers’ awareness and perception of institutional repositories in the context of content population and sustainability of IRs. Through the Descriptive Survey Design, the study engages 714 lecturers in ...

Categorical Salience Theory, Mark Schneider, Cary Deck, Patrick Dejarnette Feb 2020

Categorical Salience Theory, Mark Schneider, Cary Deck, Patrick Dejarnette

ESI Working Papers

Monetary lotteries are the overwhelmingly predominant tool for understanding decisions under risk. However, many real-world decisions concern multidimensional out- comes involving different goods. Recent studies have tested whether people treat multidimensional risky choices in the same manner as unidimensional monetary lotteries and found that choices over consumer goods are less risk-averse and more consistent with expected utility theory than choices over monetary lotteries. While these puzzling results cannot be explained by any standard model of decision making, we demonstrate that these findings are predicted by a salience-based model of category-dependent preferences that also explains the classic anomalies for choices under ...

Exploring The Use Of A Qualitative Behavioural Assessment Approach To Assess Emotional State Of Calves In Rodeos, Sally Rizzuto, Di Evans, Bethany Wilson, Paul Mcgreevy

Rodeo Competitions Collection

There are longstanding disagreements between the rodeo industry stakeholders and animal welfare advocates about the wellbeing of the animals used in events. The current study aims to determine whether qualitative behavioural assessment (QBA) is effective in identifying the emotional state of calves in so-called calf-roping events. Still images of calves captured from videos of calf-roping were shown to two groups: practitioners (n = 7) and students (n = 16). For each image, they scored (on a scale of 1–10) 12 descriptive terms—e.g., stressed, energetic, confused, frightened—based on how strongly they thought the animal was experiencing that emotion. Scores ...

Minds Without Spines: Evolutionarily Inclusive Animal Ethics, Irina Mikhalevich, Russell Powell Jan 2020

Minds Without Spines: Evolutionarily Inclusive Animal Ethics, Irina Mikhalevich, Russell Powell

Animal Sentience

Invertebrate animals are frequently lumped into a single category and denied welfare protections despite their considerable cognitive, behavioral, and evolutionary diversity. Some ethical and policy inroads have been made for cephalopod molluscs and crustaceans, but the vast majority of arthropods, including the insects, remain excluded from moral consideration. We argue that this exclusion is unwarranted given the existing evidence. Anachronistic readings of evolution, which view invertebrates as lower in the scala naturae, continue to influence public policy and common morality. The assumption that small brains are unlikely to support cognition or sentience likewise persists, despite growing evidence that arthropods have ...
