Fatphobia In Ballet: The Impact Of Organizational Practices On Body Size And Mental Health In American Ballet Companies, Ashley Chenery
Fatphobia In Ballet: The Impact Of Organizational Practices On Body Size And Mental Health In American Ballet Companies, Ashley Chenery
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
In American ballet companies, female dancers’ weights factor into decisions regarding hiring, casting, and promotions. However, female dancers are now using social media to speak out against fatphobic organizational practices. This paper analyzes personal accounts of size discrimination posted to Instagram and YouTube by high-profile veteran ballerinas of New York City Ballet. It also includes interviews with professional Gen Z ballerinas (in companies spanning the US), who discuss current fatphobic practices in companies and schools. Utilizing qualitative coding, this paper seeks to disarticulate thinness from artistry and to urge mental health as a priority in American ballet.

The Body, Mind, And Trauma: A Case For Trauma-Sensitive Somatic Mindfulness, April T. Neufeld
The Body, Mind, And Trauma: A Case For Trauma-Sensitive Somatic Mindfulness, April T. Neufeld
Mindfulness Studies Theses
This thesis comprises a rationale paper and a creative project advocating for an integrated approach to mindfulness for trauma survivors that prioritizes trauma sensitivity and body-oriented somatic practices. It is important because trauma is a pervasive social issue with profound psychophysiological impacts on survivors, and current mindfulness offerings often fail to adequately address their needs, causing confusion or possibly re-traumatization. The literature indicates somatic and mindfulness-based interventions show promise for trauma recovery; however, research is limited. The findings reveal gaps between trauma-informed care and mindfulness-based approaches due to inconsistent application of trauma-sensitive techniques, a disconnect between somatic and mindfulness-based approaches …

Collaborating For Social Change: Promising Practices For Effective Youth-Adult Partnerships, Michael Kokozos, Maru Gonzalez
The Journal of Extension
Youth-adult partnerships are a powerful means to nurture and amplify youths' voices and create social change. Drawing on our own framework, critical positive youth development, and our experience pilot testing the #PassTheMicYouth curriculum, we identified four promising practices to cultivate youth-adult partnerships. 4-H professionals can use these strategies with youths to prepare them to partner with community-based organizations and to maintain enduring and effective relationships.

Animation As Therapy For Mental Health Treatment Across Diverse Populations And Contexts, A Literature Review, Daneile Tabana
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Scientific research has explored and identified the beneficial relationship between health and creative expression, recognizing art therapy as a source of healing. Animation has been newly recognized as an art therapy medium with potential for therapeutic healing and increased psychological well-being. This review of the literature on animation therapy explores the history of the modality’s interaction with the population observed and the effects of animation on the cognitive processes, discusses current theoretical orientations and treatment options for treating a range of conditions that affect mood, thinking, and behavior with animation therapy, and considers culturally informed and client-centered practices alongside traditional …

Community Project: Dominican Palo Dance, A Non-Pathological Intervention To Enhance Youth Therapeutic Engagement In Community Based Healing, Johanny Maria Castillo
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Palo Dance is a Dominican folkloric, cultural, spiritual, and community dance, an essential piece of Dominican roots and their ancestral healing practices. Dominican Palo Dance healing qualities include a variety of Indigenous and diasporic approaches including chanting, rituals, and community healing. These methods not only have healing properties but also reflect deeply rooted cultural practices designed for holistic well-being. The research is grounded in my experiences growing up in Los Guaricanos de Villa Mella, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, a marginalized yet culturally rich community. Through participation in youth spiritual groups, community dances, and events, I developed a profound appreciation for …

Monologue Writing And Psychodramatic Techniques With Adolescents Experiencing Suicidality, Justine Rea
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The United States continues to face an ongoing youth mental health epidemic among children and adolescents, coinciding with an increase of suicidal behaviors among this developmental age group. Accessibility to culturally competent mental health support, addressing social barriers, and an increase in research to identify and respond to youth mental health needs are among recommendations provided by the Surgeon General. Currently, there is limited clarity on standards and best practices for treating suicidality across mental health sectors. As such, it’s necessary to explore additional means of support for adolescents experiencing suicidality within the individual therapy model. Thwarted belonging and sense …

Empowering Children With Music Therapy: Trauma Narrative Songwriting, Deborah Hudson
Empowering Children With Music Therapy: Trauma Narrative Songwriting, Deborah Hudson
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
This capstone thesis explored trauma narrative songwriting as a music therapy intervention for children with trauma. The literature reviewed sought to understand how music therapy helps children with trauma regulate their emotions, process heightened emotional states, practice social skills, build self-esteem, and support identity development. After reviewing the literature, the researcher noted a lack of research in using trauma narrative songwriting to foster feelings of empowerment in children. This capstone thesis explored if trauma narrative songwriting could expand expression and foster feelings of empowerment for 2 able-bodied, cisgendered African American children with a trauma history in an elementary school setting. …
Prescribed Child Abuse? Using The Americans With Disabilities Act To Deconstruct Discrimination Against Medication For Opioid Use Disorder In Child Abuse & Neglect Proceedings, Makenzie Stuard
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
The opioid crisis has disrupted parent-child relationships across the United States. While states actively seek to remove children from households with current drug use in order to protect the children, state entities often fail to protect the parent-child relationship itself by imposing counterproductive policies and stereotypes on parents who are in treatment for their drug use, which makes maintaining "recovery" and parental rights an uphill battle. This note argues that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides a novel path to root out discrimination in child abuse and neglect proceedings against parents who either take prescribed buprenorphine or are interested …

Welcome To Texas: Home Of The Most Extreme Abortion Ban In The United States, Generating Vast Child Welfare Disparities, Bailey Harvey
The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice
This comment uncovers the harsh trickling effects of overturning Roe v. Wade through focusing on the statistical nexus between the Texas’ foster care system, the victims of system cycling, and the criminal justice system. We are witnesses to watching the Court in 1973 from first balancing State’s interest and women’s fundamental rights to having the subject be a topic of the political battlefield.
Examining precedent and the reasoning behind the United States Supreme Court’s decision is a science, and the statistics continue to prove Texas’ child welfare systems are failing the children of America. Juvenile delinquency directly correlates with low …

Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Determine Urban And Suburban Homeowners' Fertilizer Management Practices, Natalie Levy, Michael Burnett
Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Determine Urban And Suburban Homeowners' Fertilizer Management Practices, Natalie Levy, Michael Burnett
The Journal of Extension
A fundamental strategy for reducing nutrient runoff from lawns and landscapes is the implementation of recommended fertilizer management practices (FMPs). Our study evaluated Louisiana urban and suburban homeowners’ current FMPs using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) constructs. We measured homeowners’ attitude, perceived norm, perceived control, intention, and past behavior regarding 12 salient FMPs. The results of our study identified which recommended FMPs to adopt and which non-recommended practices to change. To effectively modify homeowners’ FMPs, we recommended designing tailored Extension educational programming to target the TPB constructs most strongly related to homeowners’ decision to perform these practices.
Building Gender Equity In Forestry Education: The Benefits Of Oregon’S Women Owning Woodlands Network, Lauren A. Grand, Tiffany Hopkins
Building Gender Equity In Forestry Education: The Benefits Of Oregon’S Women Owning Woodlands Network, Lauren A. Grand, Tiffany Hopkins
The Journal of Extension
The Women Owning Woodlands Network was launched in 2005 as a way to provide collaborative and hands-on peer learning education to women who felt uncomfortable participating in traditional Extension programs. Since its inception the program as grown to provide education and resources for over 300 women. We surveyed these women to identify if the program continues to meet their needs. It is evident that WOWNet has continued to be an important part of OSU FNR’s outreach education program and continues to meet the needs of a historically undeserved group of landowners in ways that traditional programming does not.

Adoption Of Podcasting As A Tool For Extension Educators, Samantha Bennett, David Martin, Jason Sawyer, Soren Rodning, Don Mulvaney
The Journal of Extension
The current study fills a gap in the current literature by measuring current CES personnel and stakeholders’ attitudes toward the use of Podcasts as a tool for information dissemination. By identifying perceived barriers to podcasts by CES personnel and how receptive CES stakeholders are to CES-based podcasts, this study helps to identify important barriers to the development of podcasts, as well as how such podcasts can be best positioned to fulfill the needs and expectations of CES stakeholders. Podcasts have the potential to play a key role as an avenue for information exchange between the CES and its stakeholders. Two …
