Climate Change Andperceived Vulnerability:Gender, Heritage, Andreligion Predict Riskperception And Knowledgeof Climate Change Inhawaii, Kevin Showalter, David López-Carr, Daniel Ervin

The Geographical Bulletin

This study explores climate change related risk perception among residents of the ‘Big Island’ of Hawaii, an environmentally vulnerable region. Adapting established instruments, we investigated potential links among socio-demographic variables, risk perception, and perceived preparedness and knowledge, as they relate to climate change. Results reveal relationships between risk perceptions for climate change and gender, with females significantly more aware of the risks posed by climate change, but less prepared than men. Additionally, indigenous and native respondents felt that climate change events posed more risk and felt less prepared compared to non-indigenous. Results suggest that an understanding of how risk perceptions …

Adequate dosing of antimicrobials is paramount for treating infections in critically ill patients undergoing kidney replacement therapy; however, little is known about antimicrobial removal by sustained low-efficiency dialysis (SLED). The objective was to quantify the removal of cefepime, daptomycin, meropenem, piperacillin–tazobactam, and vancomycin in patients undergoing SLED. Adult patients ≥18 years with acute kidney injury (AKI) or end-stage kidney disease receiving one of the select antimicrobials and requiring SLED were included. Blood and dialysate flow rates were maintained at 250 and 100 mL/min, respectively. Simultaneous arterial and venous blood samples for the analysis of antibiotic concentrations were collected hourly for …

One Court, One State, One Year: What We Don't Know About Criminal Defendants' Testimony And Why It Matters, Emily Hughes, Kori Khan

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Jury trials are supposed to encourage public trust in the criminal legal system while protecting fundamental fairness for the defendant. But how can the public help ensure the fairness of criminal trials when it has no meaningful way to understand the reality of what happens every day in criminal courtrooms across the country? This Article presents findings from an original pilot study—believed to be the first and largest such study—that collected and analyzed court documents and transcripts from seventy-five state criminal trials from one court in one state in one year. It posits that the public’s understanding of the significance …

School Leadership Review

The extent to which differences were present for African American girls as a function of their economic status in their performance on the Texas state-mandated Algebra I End-of-Course exam was examined. Specifically addressed was the extent to which African American girls differed in their performance on three Grade Level performance standards: Approaches Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, and Masters Grade Level. Inferential statistical analyses of Texas statewide data revealed that statistically significantly lower percentages of African American girls who were economically disadvantaged met the three Grade Level standards than African American girls who were not in poverty. Implications and recommendations …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(5): 1352-1360, 2024. Physical activity (PA) has a wide range of health benefits. Children with high levels of social support are more likely to achieve adequate levels of PA. The purposes of this pilot study were to examine the impact of an after-school intervention on perceived peer and parental support among adolescent girls and to identify correlates of support to explore in future studies to increase PA. Seventeen low-active girls in 6th–7th grade were recruited from a local middle school to participate in an 8-week intervention where they were exposed to various types of PA …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(3): 1361-1376, 2024. The blood pressure dipping response to acute resistance training exercise (RTE) is scarce in the literature. We determined the inter-individual blood pressure (BP) dipping variability of normotensive (NT) and hypertensive (HT) men completing two modalities of a single session of RTE. Volunteers (NT n = 21, HT n = 20) underwent a non-exercise control (CTRL), RTE high-sets low-repetitions (HSLR), and RTE high-repetitions low-sets (HRLS) conditions. Twenty-four-hour ambulatory BP monitoring recorded diurnal and nocturnal systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) BP. Non-significant interactions were found between the category of individuals and the experimental conditions …

A Linkedin Analysis: Job Placement For Students In Sport Management Program Of An Eastern Kentucky Public University, Jose Garcia, Steve S. Chen, Christy L. Trent

Findings in Sport, Hospitality, Entertainment, and Event Management

In addition to standardized tests and program assessments of academic programs, tracking college alums’ employment is also deemed an effective method for measuring student learning and success. In this case study, the authors examined 251 students’ LinkedIn profiles by using main keywords such as the name of the institution and sport management to gather information about current employment status, degree of program completion, and primary self-identified skills of observed individuals. The results indicated that about 72.3% of 347 graduates (n = 251) from 2007 to 2022 had a completed profile and job employment. However, only about 37% held a …

Myth And Monument In Old Town Albuquerque: Southwest Pietà And The War Of Presiding Histories, Eric Castillo Sep 2024

Myth And Monument In Old Town Albuquerque: Southwest Pietà And The War Of Presiding Histories, Eric Castillo

Regeneración: A Xicanacimiento Studies Journal

Luis Jiménez’s Southwest Pietà (1984) intended to combat cultural amnesia that obscured Native Americans’ and Mexicans’ contributions to the state. Jiménez’s Pietà sought to counter the iconography that shaped New Mexico’s colonialist heritage. But Old Town Albuquerque shrouds Native American and Mexican contributions to the region. Albuquerque’s public art has often been deployed as a wedge to write and rewrite narratives about land inhabitants, but the city’s public art tells a powerful story about race and place in New Mexico. This essay explores the socio-historical battle of land memorialization in Old Town Albuquerque and provides a geo-racial perspective about the …

The Queer Body and the Obstructed Gaze: Chicanx Performance Artists and the Power of Self-Objectification

This article examines the ways in which four queer Chicanx performance artists have manipulated and obstructed the spectator’s gaze as a method for activating their abjection, performing self-objectification or fetishization, or asserting agency. As seminal Chicanx and queer performance artists, Luis Alfaro and Nao Bustamante set the stage for identity exploration through the corporeal and figurative display of excess: they invite in the spectator’s gaze to look at the queer brown body and challenge them to resist a reductive framing of their othered voluptuousness. In …

Cuba’s Potential Contribution to the Success of Chicano Students in the U.S.:

Directions to Decolonize the Raza Community

This exploratory paper examines the success of Cuba’s education system and the potential application of their education strategies to increase achievement among Chicano students in the U.S. While Chicanos remain one of our nation’s most underachieving ethnic groups, Cuba’s success in eradicating inequality in educational outcomes stands out among Latin American countries. Both Chicanos and Cubans have experienced a form of colonialism that poses a formidable barrier to educational success. Using a mixed methods approach that includes a review of scholarly literature …

Where Is Chican@ Studies? Infrastructure & Institutionalization In The 21st Century, Reynaldo F. Macias

Regeneración: A Xicanacimiento Studies Journal

This article provides for only a marginal update to the institutional context and complexity of Chican@ Studies in the US, so that we might better understand the need for comprehensive institutional history and its impact on the field as a discipline and as an Alter-Native curriculum framework for schooling. The question answered in this essay is “what is the 21st century institutional presence of Chicana & Chicano Studies in the schools?” focusing primarily on higher education, historicizing, contextualizing, and politicizing it. It describes the number and locations of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, administrative units, and, in part, relationships to …

Gender And Genocide: Rape As A Weapon Of War In Darfur, Ella Woods Sep 2024

Gender And Genocide: Rape As A Weapon Of War In Darfur, Ella Woods

Undergraduate Research Symposium

In instances of genocide, gender and ethnicity intersect in such a way that women of a persecuted group undergo a distinct experience from men. This is evident in the case of Darfur, where women of the region have been subjected to rape, forced pregnancy, and more by the Janjaweed and Sudanese government. This gendered violence is not unique to the genocide in Darfur, but examining its details reveals how the international community can better protect not only women in Darfur, who continue to face violence to this day, but also women who are victims of genocide throughout the world.

Effects Of Neuroticism–Anxiety And Sociability Personality Traits On The Relationship Between Testosterone And Risk Propensity In Finance, Urša Ferjančič, Fajko Bajrović, Aljoša Valentinčič

Economic and Business Review

Risky financial decisions, defined as rational calculations between expected risk and reward, are subject to various psychological and neurobiological mechanisms. In this context, the relationship between testosterone levels and risk propensity has been investigated, but the results are inconsistent. Here, the effects of some personality traits, neuroticism–anxiety and sociability, on the relationship between testosterone levels and risk propensity were examined in decisions under risk (GDT) and under uncertainty (BART). In a mixed-sex sample of 100 graduate students and experienced decision makers, we found that basal testosterone levels were positively correlated with risk propensity for decisions under risk in males with …

Mapping Characteristics And Financial Importance Of Development Banks Across The World, Jan Porenta, Vasja Rant

Economic and Business Review

This paper investigates the financial importance of development banks across regions and income groups. We construct a global banking dataset for the period 1995 to 2021 and analyse the distribution of development banking assets across macro regions and country income groups. We create a composite global and national Development Bank Financial Importance index (DBFI index) that enables us to rank the most financially important development banks across the globe. Development banks play significant and diverse roles in the global financial system, but their financial importance varies across regions and income groups. The paper offers a broad analysis of the global …
