Yellowstone River has seen increasing recreational use as Montana has grown and out of state visitation has increased, leading to some locals voicing concerns of crowding. River recreation, as with many outdoor recreational activities, has participants that may be considered to be sensitive to crowded conditions and place a high value on solitude. Considering these perceptions, there is reason to believe that these participants may change their river use patterns if or when the perceived level of crowding exceeds their tolerance thresholds. Objective: This is a meta-analysis focused on the success rates of scent detection canines and potential factors that could influence their accuracy. A series of statistical analyses were conducted to determine if certain demographic factors, such as the dog’s gender, age, and breed, have an effect on a scent dog’s accuracy during a search. Or if more circumstantial factors, like the dog’s level of experience in scent work, the type of target scent, and their handler’s awareness of the target’s location, affect the outcome of the search.

This paper explores the overlap of ED and ASD symptoms, and evaluates the results of a study that used network analysis to investigate pathway and core ED and ASD comorbidity symptoms. Eating Disorders (EDs) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have several overlapping symptoms that may inform our understanding of both disorders. Increased knowledge of the overlap of EDs and ASD can improve the treatment of EDs in those with ASD.

The Thomas Fire for a time was the largest wildfire in California history, burning 281,893 acres and destroying 1,063 structures. Within three years, the August Complex Fire, at 1,032,649 acres, almost quadrupled that record. Climate related disasters such as these have impelled social science researchers to heed calls for a paradigm shift in understanding the risks climate change poses to the social world, in particular, disaster risks for vulnerable groups. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration began in 2021, and after a history of contentious ethical debates, ecological restoration is increasingly portrayed as a viable framework for combating environmental degradation and supporting more healthy and stable social-ecological systems. The proposed ecological restoration of Grant Creek, a degraded stream near Missoula, Montana, offers an opportunity to connect a restoration site to the broader, rapidly growing field of restoration practice. A complex set of factors and processes operating within the United States public education system contribute to high rates of geographic illiteracy in the majority of young adults. These factors include, but are not limited to, a lack of structured federal controls over state geography requirements, insufficient time to implement effective geography curricula, and inadequate assessment techniques. In recent decades, non-governmental organizations have acquired and established community forests and conservation areas in the U.S. However, there have been few empirical studies on their governance. This study focuses on the Blackfoot Community Conservation Area (BCCA) in the Blackfoot watershed of Montana, created in 2005. The BCCA is a 41,000 acre mosaic of private, state, and federal lands, including 5,600 acres known as the “Core” located near Ovando mountain and owned by the Blackfoot Challenge, a local watershed organization and leader in grassroots conservation. Many students who have to study mathematics as an enabling subject within higher education experience mathematical anxiety to a greater or lesser extent. This affliction can impact student learning and achievement in mathematics and so a number of strategies have been suggested for alleviating mathematical anxiety or at least moderating its effects. This paper reports on a comparison of the mathematical anxiety experienced by two groups of students each studying a different subject discipline. The results indicate that the groups have quite different levels of anxiety and the differing contributing factors between the groups suggest that approaches to remediation need …

Problem posing is recognized as a key component of mathematics (Ellerton, 2013). However, in many curricula, problem solving often dominates over problem posing (Stoyanova, 2003). This focus on problem solving exists despite research that shows that problem posing improves students' problem-solving skills, attitudes, confidence, understanding of concepts, and mathematical thinking (Singer, Ellerton, & Cai, 2013); reinforces basic mathematical skills, increases motivation, responsibility, and thinking flexibility (Ponte & Henriques, 2013); and is useful for teachers to assess students' cognitive processes, identify misconceptions, and modify instruction (Ponte & Henriques, 2013). Spatial ability is essential for succeeding in the STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines, especially mental rotation. Research points out that spatial ability is malleable, and therefore calls for developing learners’ ability by engaging them in appropriate assignments, starting from kindergarten. Given this, our paper presents several assignments designed for mathematics prospective teachers with the aim of fostering their mental rotation skills. Specifically, these assignments deal with solids of revolution, three-dimensional shapes formed by revolving a planar shape about a given axis that lies on the same plane.

In this paper, the authors report the mathematical learning experiences of “successful” female students in secondary mathematics classrooms taught by a “successful” teacher with the traditional mathematics’ behaviorist approach. The authors’ claim that the traditional view of mathematics held by the teacher and supported by the school system could not promote rigorous mathematics for girls to understand the importance of mathematical thinking as a foundation for success in mathematics-related professions. The authors recommend future studies creating opportunities for discussion in the field about the teacher’s view on mathematics, classroom practice, and how these resonate with girls’ experiences of learning mathematics.

The main argument of this article is that “challenging mathematics for all” can be more than just a nice slogan, on condition that all students are empowered to make informed choices of: a challenge to be dealt with, a way of dealing with the challenge, a mode of interaction, an extent of collaboration, and an agent to learn from. Pedagogies supporting such choices are called choice-based pedagogies. Detecting if a population is in decline is an important objective for biologists and conservationists who are monitoring threatened populations. As genetic methods improve effective population size (Ne) and effective number of breeders (Nb) continue to gain popularity as a way to monitor species. Using simulated populations and linkage disequilibrium, we explored detecting population decline through Nb in age structured populations. What does it mean to align an assessment to the domain of interest? In this paper, we analyze teachers’ performance on the Learning Mathematics for Teaching assessment of Proportional Reasoning. Using a mixture Rasch model, we analyze their performance on the entire assessment, then on two different subsets of items from the original assessment. We consider the affordances of different conceptualizations of the domain and consider the implications of the domain definition on the claims we can make about teacher performance. The present digital era has seen rapid growth in the availability of big data; we were curious about whether such availability of data changes perceptions and assessments of risk. In this paper, we investigate adults’ (35-63 years old) perceptions of risk in the big-data era and how it figures in their everyday life. We developed decision-making scenarios for socio-economic, environmental and health topics that involve modelling with personal value systems alongside Gapminder word map data. Going beyond the idea of risk in statistical theory, we attempt to gain an understanding of the processes by which adults assess risks.

We consider the issue of standards of proof in legal decisions from the point of view of probability. We compare ``balance of probabilities'' and ``beyond a reasonable doubt'' to the statistical use of p-values. We point out various fallacies which sometimes arise in legal reasoning. And we provide several examples of legal cases which involved probabilities, including some in which incorrect decisions were made and defendants were wrongfully convicted.

In this article, we explore notions of risk as perceived or experienced by individuals involved in mathematical education. We present this exploration in the form of vignettes, each illustrating a form of risk: a parent’s reaction to classroom “propaganda”; a teacher trying to do justice by her students; a teacher confronted by his administration; and a college professor who believes university policy to be unjust. Although risk is an important topic for society it is seldom addressed when teaching statistics and probability. In this paper we refer to this discrepancy identifying three obstacles for teaching risk in school regarding the mathematical and the situational aspect of risk. Based on two educational constructs, i.e. probability literacy and modelling, we discuss existing approaches for teaching risk in school and propose two strategies for promoting risk as a valuable issue for students based again on the distinction of the mathematical and situational aspect of risk.

The aim of this work was to investigate the role of the cognitive system and the affective system on adolescents’ risk taking in gambling tasks characterized as different on the basis of information given to decision makers. In Study 1, we explored the role of probabilistic reasoning and sensation seeking on decision making in a non-risky context (Non-Gambling Task) and a risky context (Gambling Task) in which no preliminary information were given to participants. The theme of this special issue is risk. But risk is not a common topic of investigation in mathematics education, lest it be an occasional interest in “at risk” students, generally defined as those who likely will fail at school. In this study, we are not interested in this rather limited use of the risk concept. Instead, we show that risk not only is a condition of human life generally, but also a necessity for teaching and learning mathematics. This paper summarizes the extant peer-‐reviewed research on PTs’ understanding of geometry and measurement, focusing on a wide variety of topics within these content domains. When looking across the 26 studies reviewed, findings span a variety of content topics, providing little depth in either the geometry or measurement content domain. However, collective findings do indicate PTs’ overall conceptions in geometry and measurement to be limited and weak, with PTs relying on memorized procedural processes. Some evidence indicates that cognitive development, along with spatial visualization skills, plays a greater role in learning geometry than memory skills. In addition, the van Hiele …

Research on technology-assisted teaching and learning has identified several families of factors that contribute to the effective integration of such tools. Focusing on one such family, affective factors, this article reports on a qualitative study of 30 prospective secondary school mathematics teachers designed to acquire insight into the affect associated with the visualization of geometric loci using GeoGebra. Affect as a representational system was the approach adopted to gain insight into how the use of dynamic geometry applications impacted students’ affective pathways.
