"No Piece, No Peace": Class Contradictions In The Resurging Black Freedom Movement, Sundiata K. Cha-Jua
Sundiata K Cha-Jua
In the shadow of the St. Louis Arch (commemorating "western expansion"), the Black Freedom Movement is being forced forward by the dynamic interaction between racial commonalities and class contradictions. Two things are important about the I-70 demonstrations? First, tactically by pushing contemporary protest beyond symbolic demonstrations this entrepreneur-led coalition has rehabilitated the march as a militant offensive weapon. Second, from the perspective of the Black working class and poor, the current settlement seems a sellout. The agreement highlights the need for poor and working class Blacks to pursue their own class interests. The I-70 actions deserved united Black community support, …
The Perception Of Spirituality And Its Manifestations In The Lives Of African American Male College Students, Adrienne Coleman
The Perception Of Spirituality And Its Manifestations In The Lives Of African American Male College Students, Adrienne Coleman
Adrienne Coleman
This study initiated in response to the lack of information on spirituality in African Americans and more specifically African American males. It is very important that spirituality be studied to make health educators knowledgeable about its overall nature. With awareness the health educators will be prepared to implement health promotion interventions that are appropriate and consistent with the beliefs of this subculture. The literature regarding this subject addressed many different aspects of spirituality. There was only a minute amount of information on African Americans and even less on African American males. Instead the literature search concentrated on areas such as: …
Survival Versus Years Of Healthy Life; Which Is More Powerful As A Study Outcome?, Paula Diehr
Survival Versus Years Of Healthy Life; Which Is More Powerful As A Study Outcome?, Paula Diehr
Paula Diehr
Studies of interventions that are intended to improve patients' health are often evaluated with survival as the primary outcome, even when a measure adjusted for quality of survival, such as years of healthy life (YHL), would seem more appropriate. The purpose of this article is to determine whether studies based on survival are more or less powerful than studies based on YHL in clinical trials where either measure might be appropriate. We used data from the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) to estimate the sample size that would be needed in studies of 156 different health conditions, for the two outcome …
Male Interracial Wage Differentials: Competing Explanations, Patrick Leon Mason
Male Interracial Wage Differentials: Competing Explanations, Patrick Leon Mason
Patrick L. Mason
Persistent interracial wage differentials present a challenge for neoclassical models of discrimination, which claim that long run competition is not consistent with persistent discrimination. Accordingly, several missing variable explanations are proposed in the literature. These modifications have two implications. One, interracial wage inequality is due to interracial inequality in pre-labor market factors. Two, there is no correlation between intergroup segregation and interracial wage differentials. However, the job competition model of discrimination argues that persistent wage discrimination and racial and gender employment segregation are causally related. Also, this model shows that racial discrimination is linked to the profit maximizing behavior of …

Periodontal Status And Treatment Needs Among Indian Estate Population, Ali T. T., Razak I. A., Rosnah Binti Zain
Prof. Dr. Rosnah Binti Zain
The aim of this study was to determine the periodontal status and treatment needs among the Indian estate population. The Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs was used to obtained clinical data on 208 Indian subjects residing in three estates in the state of Selangor. The prevalence of periodontal disease among the subjects was 100%. Less than 1% of the subjects had bleeding on probing as the highest CPITN score. About 97% of the subjects showed evidence of periodontal pocket of 4mm or more. Of these, half showed pocketing of 6mm or more. No statistically significant difference (p> 0.05) was …

Woman-As-Symbol: Intersections Of Indian Nationalism, Gender, And Identity, Shakuntala Rao
Shakuntala Rao
The purpose of this article is to explore the connection between Indian nationalism and gender identity. I provide a critique of Radhakrishnan and Chatterjee's notion of the outer/inner dichotomy of Indian nationalism by stating that religion, in postcolonial India, has emerged as a discursive totality that has subsumed the politics of indigenous or inner identity more so than other rhetoric of caste, tribal, gender, and class. I provide a groundwork for this debate via the writings of Nehru and Gandhi. I conclude, through an analysis of the practices of amniocentesis and Sati, that women and their bodies have been used …

Domestic Violence And The Law: An Impassioned Exploration For Family Peace, Sarah M. Buel
Domestic Violence And The Law: An Impassioned Exploration For Family Peace, Sarah M. Buel
SARAH M BUEL
In thinking about the family law practitioner's response to domestic violence issues over the past few decades, it is heartening to note some progress while remaining deeply concerned that many lawyers have yet to embrace even the most basic tenets of victim safety and offender accountability. Domestic violence impacts most lawyers and judges; however, those in the field of family law are positioned to dramatically improve the lives of all parties, if they have learned how to intervene effectively. The continuing violence indicates that we must examine the larger issues: namely, the social, cultural and economic conditions that will facilitate …
Same-Sex Domestic Violence, Nancy J. Knauer
Same-Sex Domestic Violence, Nancy J. Knauer
Nancy J. Knauer
Same-sex domestic violence is a difficult topic. The LGBT communities have been reluctant to discuss same-sex domestic violence for fear of validating negative stereotypes and detracting from the push for legal recognition of such relationships. The relative silence on this issue continues despite the fact that individuals in same-sex relationships are more likely to be abused by their partners than beaten in an act of anti-gay violence. and despite legislative efforts to restrict domestic violence laws to cover only different-sex couples. The political downside of discussing same-sex domestic violence is obvious. Anti-gay organizations invoke same-sex domestic violence to bolster their …
Critical Of Race Theory: Race, Reason, Merit And Civility, Nancy Levit
Critical Of Race Theory: Race, Reason, Merit And Civility, Nancy Levit
Nancy Levit
A hazard lurks in any but the most careful representation of another's viewpoint. Call it "slippage" or the "essentialist error," the point is that communication rarely does complete justice to its object. The problem is compounded when the communication is mediated. We all know that between a story and its retelling, something will get lost in translation. Consider feminism, gay legal theory, and critical race theory, and their depictions in academic journals and the popular media. Newspapers and news magazines have recently published a spate of academic trash talk accusing critical race theorists of "playing the race card" and indulging …

Post-Tenure Review Through Post-Tenure Development: What Linking Senior Faculty And Technology Taught Us, Mary Deane Sorcinelli
Mary Deane Sorcinelli
This article highlights a faculty development program designed to allow mid-career and senior faculty to effectively apply the capacities of technology to teaching and learning. It provides a profile of senior faculty and their work satisfactions and stresses; describes a senior teaching fellows program, TEACHnology, as one mechanism for senior faculty reviatalization; and suggests the kinds of practices that seem to best support senior faculty in terms of career development. It concludes with implications of such faculty development processes for meeting some of the challenges of post-tenure

Hiv-Infected Women And Motivation To Add Children To Their Families, R.L. Sowell, Kenneth D. Phillips, T.R. Misener
Kenneth D. Phillips
The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify how susceptible women perceived their babies to be to perinatal transmission of HIV and to examine factors that influence a woman’s motivation to have a baby. The sample consisted of 45 African American women living in South Carolina and Georgia. Data were collected during face-to-face interviews. A researcher-developed scale, Motivation for Childbearing in HIV-Positive Women, provided reliable and valid data on factors that motivated or deterred a woman’s decision to have a baby. This study supported prior findings that HIV status is not the most important influence on a woman’s reproductive …

Health Care Provider's Influence On Hiv-Infected Women's Belief And Intentions Related To Azt Therapy, R.L. Sowell, Kenneth D. Phillips, C. Murdaugh, A. Tavakoli
Kenneth D. Phillips
This study examined how women’s relationship with their primary health care provider (PHP) and their perceptions about how effective their PHPs believe zidovudine (AZT) to be in decreasing perinatal transmission related to women’s AZT beliefs and intentions. It used a cross-sectional design to collect data from 59 HIV-infected African American women. Almost half the women (45%) had given birth since HIV diagnosis. Most of the babies born to HIV-infected mothers (87%) were seronegative. Data analysis with Pearson’s r indicated that the quality of the women’s relationship with their PHP was positively correlated to how important the PHP would be in …

Propositions For Information Technology: Planning For Success, Ken Haycock, G. Jopson
Ken Haycock
In Canada, the West Vancouver School Board proposed 13 propositions about the selection, management, and effective use of information technology. For each proposition, the senior management included a full outline of the current status, a plan of action, the name of the staff member responsible, and a time line. An external assessment of implementation of each proposition and of the impact on achievement was undertaken. The propositions, clustered in the areas of vision, statement of beliefs, student learning goals, definition, social issues, learning issues, clarification of roles and responsibilities, integration of information delivery systems, community-based information infrastructure, and assessment, are …
