Relevance of Sex Education for Women Who Have Sex with Women

Sarrah Spohnholtz

Abstract

Women who have sex with women (WSW) are missing sexual scripts in society making it difficult for women who are in sexual relationships with other women to communicate and negotiate how to have safe sex. WSW are not given the appropriate resources, knowledge, or materials to engage in safe sex practices or advocate for their health. On top of that, there are minimal amounts of health research focusing on lesbian, bisexual, women who have sex with women leading to an increase in health disparities.

Background: Women …

Effects Of Pay For Performance On Performance Outcomes In Pennsylvania’S Medicaid Managed Care Program, Harry Zobel, David Kelley, Michele Robinson, Pauline Sanders, Jennifer Ibrahim May 2019

Effects Of Pay For Performance On Performance Outcomes In Pennsylvania’S Medicaid Managed Care Program, Harry Zobel, David Kelley, Michele Robinson, Pauline Sanders, Jennifer Ibrahim

Research Day

Background and Purpose: A goal in healthcare is to reduce costs while improving quality of care, and population health. Pay for Performance (P4P) is one intervention being utilized by Medicaid programs to achieve this goal. While P4P has become a favorite among policymakers, its effectiveness in improving health outcomes is still under investigation. We assessed the role of P4P to improve provider performance by evaluating Pennsylvania’s Medicaid Managed Care (MMC) Program.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective longitudinal analysis of providers within the HealthChoices MMC Program in Pennsylvania. We examined annual provider performance outcomes for seven providers across six …

Long Term Functional And Esthetic Outcomes After Fibula Free Flap Reconstruction Of The Mandible, I. Petrovic, R. Blaser, Timothy Blackwell, C. Mccarthy, I. Ganley, S. Patel, P. Cordeiro, J.P. Shah

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Objectives: To report functional and esthetic outcomes, after fibula free flap (FFF) reconstruction of the mandible for oral cancer, assessed by physicians, non-clinicians and patients.

Materials and Methods: Twenty-five long term survivors from oral cancer after FFF reconstruction were recalled for head and neck examination by surgeons and patient reported outcomes, using EORTC, QLQ C-30, H&N-35 and FACE-Q questionnaires.

Results: Physicians reported 64% restoration of functionality compared to normal. Patients reported high scores on QLQ-C30, but lower scores on H&N-35. Esthetic scores were reported higher by clinicians than non-clinicians. The decline in function and appearance was attributed to loss of …

Literature Review Of Rural Water Fluoridation Cessation, Amanda Klyn, Vaughn Moser, Blake Miller, Samantha Benson Apr 2019

Literature Review Of Rural Water Fluoridation Cessation, Amanda Klyn, Vaughn Moser, Blake Miller, Samantha Benson

Celebration of Research

A literature review was performed between September 2018 and November 2018 to determine the effects of community water fluoridation cessation in rural communities, namely in Ida Grove, Iowa. Eleven articles were selected using inclusion and exclusion parameters, analyzed by the researchers, and summarized. Results of the literature review highlighted the benefits of fluoridation, which outweighed the possible risks. A plan of action was set out by the researchers to best promote optimal fluoridation in rural communities.

Using Ct Scans To Describe An Allosaurus Skull (Dinosauria: Theropoda), Jordan C. Oldham Apr 2019

Using Ct Scans To Describe An Allosaurus Skull (Dinosauria: Theropoda), Jordan C. Oldham

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

In 2001, an Allosaurus skull (CMP 279) was discovered in the Skull Creek Basin in Moffat County, Colorado. The skull is one of the most complete for the species and even contains the hyoid bones, which are usually not present. The skull is now permanently mounted, for display purposes, thus making the study of the individual bones difficult for producing a paleo-anatomical description. Computed Tomography (CT) scans of CMP 279 were created in 2017 and then made available for this study in 2019. CT scans are being used to investigate internal anatomy of skulls such as the endocranial cavity, sinuses, …

Fluoride Removal From Water Using A 3d Printed Calcium Carbonate Filter, Sophia Bakar, David Kahler, Benjamin S. Goldschmidt Apr 2019

Fluoride Removal From Water Using A 3d Printed Calcium Carbonate Filter, Sophia Bakar, David Kahler, Benjamin S. Goldschmidt

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Groundwater containing high concentrations of fluoride is the most common source of drinking water in rural areas in parts of east Africa, India, and China. The elevated levels of fluoride cause skeletal and dental fluorosis, which is the weakening and decay of bone structures due to the leeching of calcium from the body as calcium and fluoride bond by the process of adsorption. Over 150 million people are suffering from some form of fluorosis due to the consumption of groundwater. Calcium carbonate has been demonstrated to influence fluoride removal in several forms. To make fluoride removal a cost-effective and user-friendly …

Aortoduodenal Fistula Forms From Primary Aortic Stump Graft In A Two-Time Multi-Visceral Transplant Patient With Presentation Of Gastrointestinal Bleed And Bowel Perforation: A Case Report, Brielle Corrente Mar 2019

Aortoduodenal Fistula Forms From Primary Aortic Stump Graft In A Two-Time Multi-Visceral Transplant Patient With Presentation Of Gastrointestinal Bleed And Bowel Perforation: A Case Report, Brielle Corrente

Graduate Student Research Symposium

Usually not diagnosed until open laparotomy, aortoduodenalfistulas (ADF) are one of the rarest complications of intestinal transplant surgery. With an incidence rate of only 0.04% at autopsy and only 250 documented cases since the early 1800’s, aortoduodenal fistulas are the most deadly complications of intestinal transplantation with a mortality rate of 100% without surgical intervention. A 39 year old, two-time multi-visceral transplant African American female patient suffered from a primary aortoduodenal fistula formation in a primary modified multi-visceral transplant aortic stump graft site. With emergency open laparotomy repair, revascularization of the secondary multi-visceral transplant was performed, saving the life of …

An Investigation Of Stimulants: Reviewing Their Effects On The Brain, Including Memory And Microglia, Michael Douchey Mar 2019

An Investigation Of Stimulants: Reviewing Their Effects On The Brain, Including Memory And Microglia, Michael Douchey

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Stimulants are a class of drugs that have a variety of effects on the brain, including changes in receptor activity in the brain areas responsible for- memory, attention, emotion, motor control, and the reward pathway. Stimulants may be generally classified by their availability. For example, prescription stimulants, which include drugs such as methylphenidate (Concerta™, Ritalin™) and mixed amphetamine salts (Adderall™), must be prescribed by medical professionals. Another regulated stimulant, albeit one available without a prescription, is nicotine; a highly addictive chemical that is age-restricted by the U.S. federal government. Nicotine is found in tobacco products, and in tobacco-free alternatives including …
