Accuracy Of Different Sequencing In Bimaxillary Orthognathic Surgery: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Thatchawee Borikanphanitphaisan, Ellen Wen-Ching Ko

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Introduction: Compared to the classic maxilla-first sequence in bimaxillary orthognathic surgery, inverted mandible-sequence has been encouraged for potentially higher accuracy. However, evidence regarding this topic is lacking. Methods: A systematic review of the literature on different sequencing of bimaxillary surgery was conducted, gathering from following databases: Cochrane, Pubmed, Scopus, Medline (Ovid), Web of Science, ScienceDirect. Articles mentioning “sequencing”, “mandible-first”, “orthognathic surgery” of at least case-report level of evidence were included without restriction. Relevant articles were included for quality assessment and extracted data for indications of mandible-first sequence from all studies. Meta-analysis of surgical accuracy at upper central incisors in horizontal …

Combined Multi-Segmental Surgical-Orthodontic Treatment In Skeletal Class Iii With Facial Asymmetry And Gummy Smile: Two-Year Stability, Rouh-Hwai Wang, Hui-Ling Chen

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

This is a case of skeletal class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry, gummy smile, and maxillary canting, treated with bimaxillary surgery and orthodontic treatment. The two-jaw surgery was performed including a 3-pieces LeFort I segmental osteotomy, anterior segment impaction with clockwise rotation, and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies with genioplasty. Through the 2-year-4-month treatment procedure, the skeletal and occlusal relationship turned to be normal with esthetically pleasing smile and profile. Furthermore, in the two-year follow-up, we found the treatment results were quite stable no matter in skeletal or dental aspects.

Orthodontic Treatment Of Class Ii Malocclusion With Single Maxillary Incisor, Chien-Cheng Chen, Yi-Horng Chen Jan 2019

Orthodontic Treatment Of Class Ii Malocclusion With Single Maxillary Incisor, Chien-Cheng Chen, Yi-Horng Chen

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatment of a Class II malocclusion case with single maxillary central incisor was presented in the case report. The treatment plan consisted of removing one maxillary central incisor instead of premolars. Bilateral maxillary lateral incisors were mesialized for space closure and substitution for maxillary central incisors. The morphology of maxillary lateral incisors was modified to mimic the maxillary central incisors. After treatment, both occlusion and esthetics was improved, and the patient was satisfied with the results.

To Do Or Not To Do? Slow Orthodontic Extrusion For Implant Site Development In Esthetic Zone At The Anterior Maxilla, Hui-Chen Tsai, Chung-Chen Jane Yao, Cheing-Meei Liu Jan 2019

To Do Or Not To Do? Slow Orthodontic Extrusion For Implant Site Development In Esthetic Zone At The Anterior Maxilla, Hui-Chen Tsai, Chung-Chen Jane Yao, Cheing-Meei Liu

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Slow orthodontic extrusion (SOE) for implant site development, was introduced in 1991. It has been more than 20 years since this treatment was applied in our clinical practice. In this paper, we investigate surgeon's expectation of SOE for special requirements of immediate implantation by a clinical case. We also review case reports/case series searched from PubMed and inspect the power of evidence of these reports from the integration of data collection, and try to define the value of SOE. If the SOE cannot eliminate at least one surgical procedure, we need to consider the necessity of SOE before implant surgery.

Purpose: This study evaluated whether the three-dimensional (3D) plane-to-plane mandibular plane angle measurement method could be applied in clinical analysis in a manner similar to the application of conventional two-dimensional (2D) cephalometric measurement, regardless of whether patients had symmetrical planes. Patients and methods: This retrospective study selected 30 patients who had undergone both lateral cephalometric radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The 2D measurement was manually traced from the lateral cephalometric radiographs for the Frankfort horizontal plane line and mandibular plane line (2D FMA). The 3D reconstructions for each patient in the CBCT were evaluated using 3D software and …

A Comprehensive Diagnostic System For Orthodontists- Beyond Angle’S Classification, Ib Leth Nielsen Jan 2019

A Comprehensive Diagnostic System For Orthodontists- Beyond Angle’S Classification, Ib Leth Nielsen

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Traditionally orthodontists have used the classification system developed by Edward H. Angle in 1900 to describe the malocclusion of an orthodontic patient. This classification is very limited with respect to the information it provides and should be replaced by a more detailed and inclusive description of a patient’s malocclusion as well as the underlying biology. In this review article we propose a new technique that ensures all pertinent information gets considered and we suggest a systematic approach to a more differentiated orthodontic diagnosis. Our approach divides the diagnosis into clearly defined categories that bring together the clinical findings into a …

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

Acromegaly is an uncommon endocrinological disorder, which is rarely seen in patients presenting for orthodontic treatment. Herein, we report a patient who underwent orthognathic surgery and was diagnosed with acromegaly during the retention phase. During disease progression and treatment, gradual changes in the mandible and facial soft tissue were detected. General information and management of acromegaly are reviewed, and the role of orthodontists in the treatment of patients with acromegaly is discussed.

Management Of A Patient With Euryprosopic Face And Upper Central Diastema, Chung-Teng Chang, Yi-Min Liu, Yuen-Yung Tsang, Huei-Mei Tsai Jan 2019

Management Of A Patient With Euryprosopic Face And Upper Central Diastema, Chung-Teng Chang, Yi-Min Liu, Yuen-Yung Tsang, Huei-Mei Tsai

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

An adult female has upper central diastema complicated with a complete deep bite and spacing in lower dentition. The broad face and ovoid shaped dental arch form require special attention as an intrinsic transverse dimensional skeletal malocclusion. The treatment modality therefore should be totally different from other deep bite cases with crowding or tapered dental arch. The space retention after active treatment is of prime important. Root divergence of upper incisors and bodily protraction movement of lower posterior teeth were the main concerns during treatment. Fixed lingual retainer and long term follow up are essential for stable outcome.

Taiwanese Journal of Orthodontics

The orthodontic management of patients with cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is challenging, which takes a long treatment duration and observation to follow the progress. The completion of treatment is usually not finished until growth completion. This case describes the long-term stage treatment of a 22-year-old female presented with familial CCD. The first stage orthodontic treatment was separated into two phases including surgical exposure of the anterior and posterior teeth, respectively. Extraction of the delayed exfoliated deciduous incisors and supernumerary teeth to clear the eruption path of the submerged permanent anterior teeth was started at her age of 8. The impacted anterior …
