All ETDs from UAB

Objective: The main objective of this study is to determine if any difference in tooth size exists between the maxillary quadrants in non-syndromic patients with unilateral cleft palate using cone beam computed tomography. By understanding the effects of cleft palate on tooth morphology, the multidisciplinary team of specialists involved with the care and treatment of a patient with cleft lip/palate can better understand the intricacies of necessary therapy. This understanding can, in turn, be used for proper planning of desired treatments which can increase the chance of successful achievement of desired outcomes. Materials and Methods: CBCT volumes for 18 patients …

Temporomandibular Joint Function After Orthognathic Surgery, Aikaterini Kleopatra Aslanidou Jan 2019

Temporomandibular Joint Function After Orthognathic Surgery, Aikaterini Kleopatra Aslanidou

All ETDs from UAB

Orthognathic surgery has 3 basic goals: function, esthetics and stability. The relationship between orthognathic surgery and temporomandibular joint function remains highly controversial. Regarding the functional changes and range of mandibular movements after surgery, mandibular hypomobility and other signs and symptoms of joint dysfunction are associated with orthognathic surgery in the literature. The aim of this study is to evaluate the function of the temporomandibular joints at lest 6 months after orthognathic surgery and compare them with non-surgical subjects. The null hypothesis is that there is no difference in subjective symptoms reported by the subjects and clinical evaluation of the range …

Wear Of Orthodontic Bite Turbos And Opposing Enamel, Kyle Feagin Jan 2019

Wear Of Orthodontic Bite Turbos And Opposing Enamel, Kyle Feagin

All ETDs from UAB

Orthodontic bite turbos are used to separate the maxillary and mandibular arches when disocclusion is needed for facial placement of orthodontic brackets or extrusion of teeth. The bite turbo should have adequate wear resistance to maintain the disocclusion but also avoid abrasion of the opposing enamel. The objective of this study was to measure the wear and opposing enamel wear of three materials used as bite turbos. 8 specimens (10x8x4 mm) each of Transbond LR (3M), Transbond Plus (3M) and Triad gel (Dentsply) were prepared in silicone molds and light cured for 30 seconds using an Acteon Satelec Blue Ray …

Nursing Staff Approaches To Providing Oral Hygiene In Stroke Survivors With Dysphagia: A Grounded Theory Study, Willard Edward Brewer Jan 2019

Nursing Staff Approaches To Providing Oral Hygiene In Stroke Survivors With Dysphagia: A Grounded Theory Study, Willard Edward Brewer

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory study was to explore how the nursing staff approaches oral hygiene in stroke survivors with dysphagia during the rehabilitation phase of recovery and what guides their decisions. Oral hygiene is a proven effective task known to prevent systemic health disparities (i.e. aspiration pneumonia, diabetes, gastrointestinal disparities, and even stroke). However, there are no current evidenced-based guidelines that provide instruction on how to execute oral hygiene to stroke survivors with dysphagia. Little is known about how nurses make decisions to implement oral hygiene in stroke survivors with dysphagia. Using a theoretical sampling strategy, data …

Identification And Application Of Gingival Mesenchymal Stem Cells For Dental Tissue Regenration, Yousuf Al-Aboosi Jan 2019

Identification And Application Of Gingival Mesenchymal Stem Cells For Dental Tissue Regenration, Yousuf Al-Aboosi

All ETDs from UAB

Mesenchymal stem cells have been very attractive treatment modality in regenerative medicine, but not so much in regenerative dentistry. This can be attributed to the difficulty in obtaining dental origin stem cells without extracting a tooth or other invasive procedures. Autogenous gingival graft harvested from palatal tissue is used as the gold standard for treating single tooth recession. The healing of the gingival graft has been shown to be mostly depended on the recipient side more than the graft itself. This study is aiming to find if the palatal tissue has cells with mesenchymal characteristics that are helping in the …

Ventral Hippocampal Input To The Medial Prefrontal Cortex Regulates Social Memory, Mary Leann Phillips Jan 2019

Ventral Hippocampal Input To The Medial Prefrontal Cortex Regulates Social Memory, Mary Leann Phillips

All ETDs from UAB

Both the ventral hippocampus (vHIP) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) are active participants in the neural circuitry activated by social interaction, and are both necessary for certain aspects of social behavior. Additionally, synaptic projections from the ventral hippocampus (vHIP) to the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) are implicated in several neuropsychiatric disorders. Using the Mecp2 knockout (KO) mouse model of Rett syndrome, an autism-associated disorder with network level deficits in the vHIP and mPFC as well as aberrant social behavior, we strove to determine the role of vHIP-mPFC in social behavior. Here, we show that the vHIP-mPFC projection is hyperactive in …

The Strategy Of Federally Qualified Health Centers: The Influence Of Context And Performance Implications, Seongwon Choi Jan 2019

The Strategy Of Federally Qualified Health Centers: The Influence Of Context And Performance Implications, Seongwon Choi

All ETDs from UAB

The three papers included in this dissertation attempt to provide empirical evidence on the relationship among strategies employed by Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), the contextual factors and consequent performance. The findings of these studies contribute to the existing body of literature on FQHC strategies and performance. In addition, the findings also provide key practical implications to FQHC managers as well as policymakers. Overall, the results of this dissertation suggest that the FQHC strategy on spatial differentiation is associated with a set of organizational and environmental factors. However, there was little support for the relationship between Medicaid expansion and FQHC …

Light Transmission And Wear Of Translucent Zirconia After Conventional And Fast Sintering Cycle, Anvita Maharishi Jan 2019

Light Transmission And Wear Of Translucent Zirconia After Conventional And Fast Sintering Cycle, Anvita Maharishi

All ETDs from UAB

ABSTRACT Introduction: Zirconia is classified by the mole percentage of yttria contained in the zirconia. The most strong and opaque material contains 3 mol % yttria, intermediate strength and opacity contain 4 mol %, and whereas 5 mol % is the weakest but most translucent zirconia. Refined zirconia powder is pressed into a mold to form a disc which is then milled to form a restoration. Post milling of sintered zirconia restorations is necessary to obtain final mechanical and physical properties of the restoration. Traditionally conventional sintering cycles required 6-8 hours to sinter. Whereas, fast sintering cycles have been have …

A Microfocal Effect In Photoreceptor Light Capture, Vasantha Kumari Kanukuntla Jan 2019

A Microfocal Effect In Photoreceptor Light Capture, Vasantha Kumari Kanukuntla

All ETDs from UAB

In human eyes, accomodation brings light rays into focus on the retina in order to achieve a clear images. The plane of best focus within the depth of the retina is thought to be within the photoreceptor layer, but pinpointing the exact focal position axially has not been determined. With help of adaptive optics aberration correction and its ability to have microscopic control of a retinal stimulus, we explored how sensitive human subjects are to defocus on the micron scale. We found that focal position can be reliably judged within 0.02 D, which is equivalent to about 6 microns in …

Therapeutic Mechanisms In Sickle Cell Nephropathy, Crystal Taylor Jan 2019

Therapeutic Mechanisms In Sickle Cell Nephropathy, Crystal Taylor

All ETDs from UAB

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a commonly inherited genetic blood disorder that causes hypoxia-induced polymerization of mutant hemoglobin resulting in erythrocyte sickling, transient microvascular occlusion, ischemic injury, and end-organ damage. Systemic endothelial dysfunction and vaso-occlusive episodes observed in SCD are particularly deleterious to the kidney, where the hypoxic, hyperosmotic environment of the medulla makes it particularly susceptible to ischemic injury. Over recent decades, chronic kidney disease has emerged as a significant contributor to mortality and morbidity in SCD patients. Despite a growing interest in the importance of sickle cell nephropathy (SCN), therapeutic options are limited and much remains undiscovered regarding …

Determination Of The Role Of Smu_833 In The Fitness And Virulence Of Cariogenic Streptococcus Mutans, Katherine Lynn Rainey Jan 2019

Determination Of The Role Of Smu_833 In The Fitness And Virulence Of Cariogenic Streptococcus Mutans, Katherine Lynn Rainey

All ETDs from UAB

Dental caries, commonly known as tooth decay, is the most common infectious disease worldwide. The main etiological agent of dental caries is Streptococcus mutans which can readily form a biofilm on the surface of teeth and produce acids through the metabolism of dietary sugars, which is largely responsible for the demineralization and subsequent destruction of tooth enamel. In addition, S. mutans synthesizes extracellular glucosyltransferases (Gtfs) capable of breaking apart dietary sucrose and polymerizing the glucose subunits into the sticky glucan matrix of the biofilm, imperative for the formation of robust, three-dimensional biofilms. Currently used caries therapies are not species-specific and …

Weapon carrying among youth is associated with both intrinsic or internalizing and extrinsic or externalizing factors (Stayton, 2011). Violence in youth and young adults is the 2nd leading cause of death (homicide) in Alabama. Health behavior theories posit that health-relevant attitudes, beliefs, and behavioral skills drive subsequent actions people take to protect themselves from …

Bioactive Materials: Ion Release & Recharge, Wear, Gloss & Hydroxyapatite Formation, Mohammed Badahman Jan 2019

Bioactive Materials: Ion Release & Recharge, Wear, Gloss & Hydroxyapatite Formation, Mohammed Badahman

All ETDs from UAB

Introduction : Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases 1. Unfortunately, there have been numerous failures with the treatment rendered, the materials used and how they are used. One significant cause for dental restoration failure is secondary caries and the need to replace the existing restoration. It has been reported that more than half of the restorations placed have been replaced because of recurrent caries. New materials and techniques have been developed to enhance adhesives in dentistry and improve the bonded interface however that interface still remains the weakest component of composite restorations. Marginal degradation and the …

External Root Resorption In The Orthodontic Patients, Frank Earl Litchfield Jan 2019

External Root Resorption In The Orthodontic Patients, Frank Earl Litchfield

All ETDs from UAB

External Apical Root Resorption (EARR) is a side effect of orthodontic treatment that results in root shortening in about one-third of orthodontic patients. Great variability among patients exists in their susceptibility to this multifactorial condition, and both treatment and patient specific factors contribute to EARR. Root resorption values were found to be higher in Hispanics compared to Asians and Caucasians (1). However, the prevalence of EARR is not well documented in all populations. Since African Americans represent the largest minority group in the United States, establishing the prevalence and risk factors for EARR within this ethnicity is important. Objective: To …

A Study Of Enamel Thickness Of Permanent Maxillary Canines, Daniel Diaz Rubayo Jan 2019

A Study Of Enamel Thickness Of Permanent Maxillary Canines, Daniel Diaz Rubayo

All ETDs from UAB

Introduction: Tooth agenesis is defined as the lack of development of a tooth. Maxillary lateral incisors have been reported to be missing in 2.2% of the population in the United States of America. Two treatment options are available: opening the space to restore the missing tooth with a dental prosthesis; or close the space by moving the adjacent teeth into the space and substituting the missing lateral incisor with the maxillary canine. With a wider crown and a more convex labial surface than lateral incisors, canines require a significant amount of reduction in order to achieve an adequate occlusion and …
