Dirty Water: the Newburgh water crisis

Summary

This project covers the ongoing water crisis in the City of Newburgh, New York. It tells the story of the contamination of the city’s drinking water by chemicals known as PFAS – short for perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

Valued for their resistance to water and oil, the chemicals are found in carpets, furniture, clothes, non-stick cookware, food packaging and a range of industrial products. They’re nicknamed “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment. They’re also found in fire foam, which was used at Stewart Air National Guard Base. Located …

Part I: Comparative Analysis Between Natural And Ceramic Teeth, Aneeza Hussain, Ibeth Erazo Dec 2019

Part I: Comparative Analysis Between Natural And Ceramic Teeth, Aneeza Hussain, Ibeth Erazo

Publications and Research

Ceramics play a fundamental role in Dentistry and are used widely, due to their ability to mimic the optical characteristics of enamel and dentine, as well as for their biocompatibility and strength. Initially, dental ceramics were materials that formed part of systems, designed with the purpose of producing dental prosthetics that in turn were used to replace missing or damaged dental structures. However, due to the increased demand for esthetics, its development has gone beyond in such a way that it has led to the development of all ceramic restorations. So that, in the last few decades, there have been …

Teeth are lost due to tooth decay, injury, disease, or other causes. Today, dental implants extend the range of care to a variety of patients undergoing necessary prosthodontic rehabilitation. If the benefits of such treatments are to be maximized, then implants must be selected on logical basis and placed within the context of the full range of treatment modalities. However, modern dental implant systems are based on multiple components often leading to micro-movements which cause stress on the bone or bacterial infections, both of which compromise the success of osseointegration and consequently jeopardize the whole implant adaptation. Thus, a new …

A prospective observational study was conducted at three ophthalmic clinics to assess the clinical patterns and etiology of uveitis in the Central Asia Republic of Tajikistan. All patients underwent physical and ophthalmologic examinations. Extensive efforts were made to determine the etiology of uveitis, including workups for Behçet's Disease (BD) and Vogt–Koyanagi–Harada (VKH) syndrome. All patients were tested for the presence of HLA-B27. Presence and/or history of tuberculosis and syphilis were ruled out. HSV, CMV, Chlamydia trachomatis and HIV antibody titers were determined by ELISA. Uveitis was diagnosed in 51 patient ages 14 to 60 were with women accounted for 60.8%. …

Developing A Dissociative Nanocontainer For Peptide Drug Delivery, Michael Patrick Kelly Sep 2019

Developing A Dissociative Nanocontainer For Peptide Drug Delivery, Michael Patrick Kelly

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The potency and specificity of bioactive peptides have propelled these agents to the forefront of pharmacological research. However, delivery of peptides to their molecular target in cells is a major obstacle to their widespread application. A Trojan Horse strategy of packaging a bioactive peptide within a modified protein cage to protect it during transport, and releasing it at the target site, is a promising delivery method. Recent work has demonstrated that the viral capsid of the P22 bacteriophage can be loaded with an arbitrary, genetically-encoded peptide, and externally decorated with a cell-penetrating peptide, such as HIV-Tat, to translocate across in …

A Musician Centered Toolkit For Audiologists, Ava Bonavita

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The toolkit for audiologists working with musicians includes a set of materials for use in a musician centered audiology practice. Given the rise in streaming of music by individuals of all ages and the recognition of susceptibility of musicians to hearing loss, the prevalence of hearing loss is on the rise necessitating the need for materials and protocols to better protect, educate, and treat music lovers of all ages who may be prone to hearing loss. Music induced hearing loss typically falls under the category of recreational noise exposure, a subset of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). Musicians are the …

Part I: Complete Dentures And Diabetes Correlation, Ibeth Erazo

Publications and Research

Diabetes is one of the most frequent pathologies that dentists encounter, due to its high prevalence worldwide. The aim of this study is to present the correlation between diabetes and complete denture wearers, intending to emphasize the importance of proper control and denture adaptation to oral environment for this type of patient. Within the sphere of the dental office, one of the main complications to consider in this type of patient is periodontal disease, which is their most frequent complication. Other important oral manifestations considered in the research are fungal infections, xerostomia, and burning mouth syndrome. It is common for …

Oral Rapid Hiv Testing In The Dental Setting: Experiences From Three Dental Hygiene Clinics, Anthony J. Santella, Petal Leuwaisee, Susan H. Davide, Hanna Horowitz, Bhuma Krishnamachari

Publications and Research

Background: Oral rapid HIV testing (ORHT) is implemented in the dental setting to make individuals aware of their possibly undiagnosed HIV infection. The testing process and characteristics of clients willing to receive ORHT has yet, however, to be systematically collected. Case description: Three dental hygiene clinics located in academic institutions implemented ORHT from March 2016 to April 2017. Results: 231 persons received ORHT; all had non-reactive results. Most had seen a primary care provider in the past year (n = 130), had had a previous ORHT (n = 111), and described themselves as extremely likely or likely to accept a …

Cultural Competence Amongst Undergraduate Healthcare Students (Spring 2019), Mary Lee, Tiffany Yip, Teresa Lok, Zoya Vinokur

Publications and Research

As students in the healthcare field, we want to be able to provide care that best serves the needs of a culturally diverse patient body. This study aims to look at whether healthcare students at City Tech are able to clearly define and understand the concepts of cultural competence and implicit bias in their healthcare encounters. Our research expands upon existing data from the previous

year. We opened the scope of the project to include students in non-healthcare majors to understand how the general student population perceives their healthcare encounters. While focusing on improving our data analysis, we distributed two …

Development And Psychometric Analysis Of The Roy Adaptation Modes Scale (Rams) To Measure Coping And Adaptation, Sandra A. Russo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Peoples’ lives are often interrupted or changed by experiencing a serious illness. It is important to study and understand the various coping processes that people have in adapting to illness. The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure a person’s coping response to illness-related stimuli using the Roy Adaptation Model (RAM) as its structure and framework. This study is quantitative descriptive design to develop the validity and reliability of a new instrument the Roy Adaptation Modes Scale (RAMS). A review of RAM based measurement instruments found no instrument that measured all four adaptive modes that is …
