Case Report: Streptococcus Gallolyticus Prosthetic Joint Infection, Jeffrey Dickerson, Liza Salloum, Amaan Sheikh, Madhukanth Reddy, Bryan Youree
North Texas Research Forum 2024
Streptococcus gallolyticus, part of the Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC) formerly known as Group D streptococi, is strongly associated with colorectal cancer and infective endocarditis. Its appearance in septic arthritis is rare, and its role in septic arthritis has not been as thoroughly investigated. We present the case of a 69 year old male with a history of atrial fibrillation and hypertension who was admitted to our hospital after undergoing a right knee replacement in 2023 with a chief complaint of right knee pain, fever, and chills. Arthrocentesis and blood cultures were performed, and the patient was started on …

Pharmacology courses in any institution are information intensive with a constant, high volume of new material. With that in mind, the standards that the American Dental Education Association set for Pharmacology include that: “the student must identify the influences drugs taken for non-dental purposes may have on a proposed treatment (…) and the student must recognize therapeutic agents used in the routine practice of clinical dentistry.” This requires that students at a minimum, recognize common drugs and know their major implications for dental therapy.
This learning tool has been created to address the drug recognition aspect of that standard.

Qualitative Study Of Hiv-Related Stigma In The Dental Care Setting, Sania A. Pullen, Dr. Dina T. Garcia
Undergraduate Research Posters
Objectives: People living with HIV (PLWH) are susceptible to developing a variety of oral conditions that if left untreated can lead to sore gums, painful chewing, and tooth loss as well as compromise HIV management and viral suppression. Despite the increased risk of developing oral conditions, it is estimated that up to 58% of PLH do not receive regular dental care. This study aimed to examine HIV-related stigma and discrimination in the dental care setting.
Methods: Adults living with HIV who receive care through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program at the VCU Infectious Disease (ID) clinic were recruited to participate. …

It is predicted that cigarette smokers and users of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) have poor periodontal health and greater levels of the inflammatory cytokines IL-15 and IL-18 in their saliva, compared to nonusers. Electronic cigarettes heat the liquid within the cartridge at a level that permits the individual to inhale. The inhalation within the lungs leads to tooth decay, gum disease and even oral cancer. The studies included in this review revealed that e-cigarette users had a higher risk of periodontal disease, tooth loss, and bone loss. This is due to vapor leaving a residue behind on teeth, known …

Diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disease affecting the body’s ability to produce the hormone insulin. The comparison between diabetic patients who received periodontal therapy, as opposed to those who have not, is explored in this report. Factors such as clinical attachment loss, probing depths, and effectiveness of periodontal therapy are measured. Recognizing the study's limitations, we conclude that non-surgical periodontal treatment on diabetic patients with periodontitis is shown to be clinically significant.

Opioid Addiction And Its Effect On Oral Health, Nicholas Chamberlain-Nunes, Andalena Chancio, Annika Thomas
Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters
Opioid addiction in this nation is an extremely prevalent public health crisis. The same can be said about dental caries and other oral health conditions. Research shows that opioid addiction and dental caries have a strong correlation, even former opioid addicts are more likely to have caries. The studies reviewed for this paper include an Iranian study, one on the effects of use during pregnancy, a systematic review and the inequities among various marginalized groups. It is clear there are harmful effects of opioid abuse on our oral cavity. The hope is that in the future more research will be …

There is a direct correlation between patients with periodontal disease and negative cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease. Research has proven that those who suffer from Alzheimer’s/dementia have a reduced dentition which negatively impacts masticatory function. With impaired masticatory function, it leads to poor nutrition which has a direct effect on cerebral stimulation and blood flow which worsens the effects of Alzheimer’s. The bacteria that is present during periodontitis, causes a spike in inflammatory cytokines. These cytokines invade the brain and trigger CNS inflammation which leads to cognitive decline.

Teledentistry is an online service that is utilized in many dental offices allowing for clinicians to virtually meet with patients using interactive tools and telecommunications. This method of care has been extremely beneficial to both the patient and clinician as it continues to become popular and more developed, it increases access to care for many populations by minimizing the cost of dental treatment and providing more convenient care options. Through teledentistry, problems that impact patients' access to care such as unequal access, lack of financial resources, and lack of practice availability are eliminated, allowing for different populations to receive consultation, …

Improving Emergency Department Belongings Inventory Electronic Medical Record Documentation Rates Background: Electronic Medical Record (EMR) education and training for RNs should be multifaceted and targeted to the RN clinical workflow. Pocus Use For Emergency Airway Management In Rural Emergency Departments, Margaret Downing
Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies Capstone Presentations (Center City)
Introduction
- Preparation and accurate prediction of difficult airways in emergent situations is necessary for successful first pass intubation
- Current methods for airway assessments require patient cooperation and may vary by provider
- Mallampati score: open mouth, protrude tongue, see what structures are visible3
- LEMON criteria: look externally, evaluate 3-3-2 rule, Mallampati score, obstruction, neck mobility
- Thyromental distance: measure thyroid cartilage to tip of chin with neck extended3
- Difficult airways have successful first pass intubation only 82.2% of the time (vs 92.4% for non-difficult airways)6
- Adverse effects occurred in 14.2% of patients with successful first …
