Nasal Morphology As A Predictor Of Craniofacial Growth Direction, Christos Papadopoulos Nov 2016

Nasal Morphology As A Predictor Of Craniofacial Growth Direction, Christos Papadopoulos

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

It is important for an orthodontist to predict growth related changes and thereby appropriately time orthodontic treatment using the vertical indicators currently available. A potential predictor of craniofacial growth direction that has been discussed yet remains scientifically unexplored is nasal morphology. The objectives of this study are to determine if a difference in pre-adolescent nasal contour exists between post-adolescent normodivergent and hyperdivergent subjects, and if nasal contour morphology in pre-adolescent females is a reliable indicator of future craniofacial growth direction. A significant difference in pre-adolescent nasal contour morphology was found between normodivergent and hyperdivergent groups. A pre-adolescent nasal contour elevation …

Standing Up For Student Health: An Application Of The Health Action Process Approach For Reducing Student Sedentary Behavior., Wuyou -. Sui Aug 2016

Standing Up For Student Health: An Application Of The Health Action Process Approach For Reducing Student Sedentary Behavior., Wuyou -. Sui

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Sedentary behavior (SB) has been associated with chronic diseases, such as Hypertension and Obesity; the risk appears greater the longer one engages in SB. University Students are a high-risk population for excessive SB due to academic responsibilities. Increasing frequency/length of breaks from sitting is an effective way to attenuate effects of SB. The Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) is a proven health behavior change model for behaviors like nutrition, but has yet to show effectiveness for increasing non-sedentary behaviors. Forty-five university students (12 Males, Mean age 23.3) were randomized into HAPA-intervention (sedentary behavior) or HAPA-control (nutrition) groups. Occupational Student and …

The Effects Of Manual Tooth Brushing On Parotid And Submandibular/Sublingual Gland Salivary Flow Rates In Healthy Young And Older Adults, Kristen M. Trottier Aug 2016

The Effects Of Manual Tooth Brushing On Parotid And Submandibular/Sublingual Gland Salivary Flow Rates In Healthy Young And Older Adults, Kristen M. Trottier

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Saliva is crucial for the maintenance of oral health. Individuals with reduced salivary flow may experience a distortion in taste, difficulty swallowing, and impaired articulation of speech. Research has shown that tooth brushing increases whole salivary flow rates in older adults. It is important to determine whether this increase results from the modulation of parotid gland salivary flow, submandibular and sublingual gland salivary flow, or both. Saliva produced from the parotid gland aids in digestive processes, while saliva secreted from the submandibular and sublingual glands promotes protection of the oral cavity. A within-subjects methodology was used to examine the effects …

Cal And Magi Pdz Protein Regulation Of Crfr1 And 5-Ht2ar Trafficking And Signaling, Maha Mahmoud Hammad Aug 2016

Cal And Magi Pdz Protein Regulation Of Crfr1 And 5-Ht2ar Trafficking And Signaling, Maha Mahmoud Hammad

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

PDZ (PSD95/Disc Large/Zona Occludens) domain-containing proteins are scaffolding proteins that play important roles in regulating the activity of G protein-coupled receptors. Corticotropin Releasing Factor Receptor 1 (CRFR1) and Serotonin 2A Receptor (5-HT2AR) are two GPCRs that are commonly associated with mental disorders. Both receptors also contain a class I PDZ-binding motif at the carboxyl terminal tail. In the first chapter, we investigate the effects of CAL (CFTR-associated ligand) on regulating the trafficking and signaling of CRFR1. We demonstrate a role for CAL in inhibiting CRFR1 endocytosis, cell surface expression, and CRF-mediated ERK1/2 signaling via the CRFR1 PDZ-binding motif. …

Protective Benefits Of Hydrogen Sulfide Treatment During Renal Transplantation, Ian Lobb Aug 2016

Protective Benefits Of Hydrogen Sulfide Treatment During Renal Transplantation, Ian Lobb

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) is inherent to renal transplantation (RTx) and is initiated when blood supply is necessarily removed during organ procurement (ischemia) and subsequently restored upon engraftment (reperfusion). During renal ischemia, ATP depletion causes tubular epithelial cell (TEC) injury and subsequent release of pro-inflammatory mediators. Upon reperfusion, influx of O2 causes reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and infiltration of innate immune cells which release damaging ROS and proteases. Prolonged periods of IRI are associated with increased risk of delayed graft function (DGF) and decreased long-term graft survival. The endogenously produced gasotransmitter, hydrogen sulfide (H2S), has recently been …

A Gender-Sensitized Weight Loss And Healthy Lifestyle Program For Overweight And Obese Male Hockey Fans: Effects On Dietary Behaviours, Ashleigh De Cruz Jul 2016

A Gender-Sensitized Weight Loss And Healthy Lifestyle Program For Overweight And Obese Male Hockey Fans: Effects On Dietary Behaviours, Ashleigh De Cruz

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

BACKGROUND: Male dietary behaviours have often been associated with overweightness and obesity. Although little research exists to help prevent the problem, this can somewhat be explained by the lack of men engaging in healthy eating and lifestyle change. A gender-sensitized intervention study using hockey as a draw to participate may positively change dietary behaviours and associated health outcomes. METHODS: A 12 week, 12 session, weight loss and healthy lifestyle intervention program was conducted in which overweight and obese male fans of a local hockey team were coached to adopt healthy eating and lifestyle behaviour changes in collaboration with …

Inequalities In Social Determinants Of Health In The Ontario Transgender Population, Rachel E. Giblon Jul 2016

Inequalities In Social Determinants Of Health In The Ontario Transgender Population, Rachel E. Giblon

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This study examined how everyday living conditions known to influence health outcomes – social determinants of health – differ between transgender Ontarians and the general Ontario population. Previously collected data on social determinants, demographics, health, and health care from trans (n=433) and non-trans individuals (n=39980) living in Ontario were used. Standardized risk differences showed that significantly more trans individuals were underpaid and underemployed, unable to complete their post-secondary education, and had experienced food insecurity, social exclusion and unmet health care needs. Differences were largest comparing trans men to cisgender men of the same age distribution. Findings from this study identified …

Effects Of Prenatal Exposure To Bisphenol A On Fetal Lung Development, Ayten Hijazi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Prenatal exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), one of the most prevalent endocrine disrupting chemicals, is associated with lung dysfunction and diseases in later life. However, it is unknown if this association has a fetal origin. In this thesis, a series of in vivo and in vitro experiments were conducted to determine the effects of prenatal exposure to BPA on fetal lung development, and define the underlying molecular mechanisms. Environmentally relevant doses of BPA were administered to pregnant mice via diet from embryonic day (E) 7.5 to 18.5. Fetal lungs were analyzed at E18.5 for changes in structure and expression of …

Access To Care And The Impact Of Inequality Among Individuals With A History Of Mental Illness, Heather Atyeo

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Using an Intersectionality framework, a secondary analysis of pre-existing data from the CURA2 Poverty and Social Inclusion study (Forchuk et al., 2010-2015) was used to explore the relationship between experiences of oppression and self-rated health among a cross-section of 293 community dwelling participants with a mental illness. Binary logistic regression was used to estimate the association between self-rated health and social identity (gender, ethnicity, education, homelessness, employment, disability); health care access was tested for both mediating and moderating effects. The final model explained between 18.9-25.2% of the variance in self-rated health; four independent variables made unique statistically significant contributions to …
