Workshop: Acquiring Commercial Data Sets For Library Collections: A Review Of Related Issues, Julia Gelfand, Cynthia Elliott
Workshop: Acquiring Commercial Data Sets For Library Collections: A Review Of Related Issues, Julia Gelfand, Cynthia Elliott
Digital Initiatives Symposium
This session is designed to bring together librarians and collection strategists who are responsible for identifying, acquiring and licensing commercial data in all subjects. Commercial datasets often don’t fit into traditional processes such as selection, acquisition, licensing, discoverability, storage and archiving, and are often very expensive and therefore come with unique challenges and obstacles. New forms of scholarly communication actively include data, making this session particularly timely as requests for data content are increasing. Launching practices including those using various artificial intelligence applications contribute to the complexities of handling commercial data sets. This session will provide examples of workflows libraries …

The Metadata Librarian collaborated with the Museum Collections Manager throughout this process to establish metadata requirements and workflows. This presentation explains how the pilot project came about and describes the preparation, metadata and workflow development, as well as the collaborative experience and evolution of this …

Getting To Know Our Web Archive: A Pilot Project To Collaboratively Increase Access To Digital Cultural Heritage Materials In Wyoming, Amanda R. Lehman, Bryan Ricupero
Digital Initiatives Symposium
The University of Wyoming is the only four year higher education institution in the state, a unique position amongst colleges and universities in the United States. Given this unusual status it is especially important that the university libraries use their resources to identify and partner with communities around the state to build collections that preserve their cultural heritage. An Archive-It subscription was purchased in 2016, with an initial goal of capturing university related materials. In an effort to expand the scope and meaningfulness of the web archive, a project has been undertaken to use university and statewide relationships to build …

Benefits Of The International Image Interoperability Framework (Iiif) Featuring Medieval Palimpsest Manuscripts, Lisa Mcaulay
Digital Initiatives Symposium
The International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) is a community that develops shared application programming interfaces (APIs), or technical standards, for interoperability between digital image repositories. The IIIF specifications aim to give scholars an unprecedented level of uniform and rich access to image-based resources hosted around the world, with partners from national and state libraries, research institutions, museums, archives, software firms, and other groups working with digital image repositories and resources. The IIIF has grown from the community and relies on active participation and discussion to develop, cultivate and document shared technologies, such as image servers and web clients, that provide …
