Moving Towards Faith: A Phenomenological Inquiry Into Spirituality In Adult Education , Frederick Milacci Sep 2007

Moving Towards Faith: A Phenomenological Inquiry Into Spirituality In Adult Education , Frederick Milacci

Fred Milacci

This study examined how eight adult education practitioners understand spirituality. The investigation defined and grounded the notion of spirituality within a specific religious/theological tradition, Christianity broadly defined. Data were collected via informal, conversational, taped interviews, and several themes emerged. The study used these results to interrogate the discourse of spirituality and found several serious problems including: the nondefinition and misuse by the discourse of the term spirituality, the hazards of individualized spirituality caused by imprecise definitions of the term, a failure to address the issues of faith substantively, and the separation in the discourse of religion from spirituality. The study …

Religious Imagery And The American Association For Adult Education: The Gospel Of The Aaae, Frederick Milacci Sep 2007

Religious Imagery And The American Association For Adult Education: The Gospel Of The Aaae, Frederick Milacci

Fred Milacci

Using the findings from an analysis of articles appearing in the Journal of Adult Education, this paper shows how early adult educators used religious imagery to express their fervor and enthusiasm for the field of adult education. This religious-like sense of mission and purpose among early leaders in the field was grounded in the belief that adult education could bring hope and help to a troubled world and provides a refreshing alternative to the present-day push towards professionalization.

Anonymity, Corporate Authority And The Archive: The Production Of Authorship In Late-Victorian England, Rachel Buurma Dec 2006

Anonymity, Corporate Authority And The Archive: The Production Of Authorship In Late-Victorian England, Rachel Buurma

Rachel S Buurma

This essay considers the persistence of collective and corporate models of literary authority within late-Victorian literature and print culture. While modern critics often understand Victorian authorship to be individually centered and governed by a dynamic of secrecy and disclosure, the periodical debates about anonymity that intensified in the fin de siècle suggest that Victorian readers and writers embraced a more flexible, collective notion of authorship. The plot, language, and paratext of Mary Elizabeth Hawker's pseudonymously published Mademoiselle Ixe, as well as the author-publisher correspondence concerning the novel, offer a representation of the corporate and collective interpretive modes that would have …

The Paradox Of Ethnic Minority Development In Beijing, Reza Hasmath Dec 2006

The Paradox Of Ethnic Minority Development In Beijing, Reza Hasmath

Reza Hasmath

The educational attainments of Beijing’s permanent ethnic minority population out perform or are on par with the dominant, local Hans. Yet, the Han demographic disproportionately dominates the high-wage, education-intensive employment sectors. What accounts for this paradox? What does this signify regarding the management of ethnic difference in the capital city? And how do we improve this situation? Drawing upon recent research, this paper will offer sociological explanations to answer these questions. Moreover, it will further suggest strategies for enhancing the development of ethnic minorities in Beijing.

Social Development In The Tibet Autonomous Region: A Contemporary And Historical Analysis, Reza Hasmath, Jennifer Yj Hsu Dec 2006

Social Development In The Tibet Autonomous Region: A Contemporary And Historical Analysis, Reza Hasmath, Jennifer Yj Hsu

Reza Hasmath

This paper will historically examine social development outcomes in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) in respect to poverty eradication, education and employment, health care and social integration. Moreover, it will offer tangible advice for improving future social development work in TAR. The main theoretical approach is a literature and policy review of social development in TAR from 1951 to present. Seemingly Tibet’s social development strategy has been achieved through a strong top-down approach. However, the road ahead for TAR once basic needs are satisfactorily met, is a move towards a participatory approach, whereby Tibetans can directly contribute and have a …
