This article proposes guidelines for the usage of the French definite and indefinite articles. I analyze the problem of using wrong-type articles by Thai learners of French. This difficulty seems to be rooted in the lack of understanding of the meaning of the articles. The survey of books for lea rners of French, written by both Thai and French authors, suggests that most explanations on the use of the articles focus on the "form" and not the "meaning".
