I have written an academic piece, “The Marking of Stuart Chase As a ‘Red Accountant’--An Epic (1917-1921)” on Stuart Chase (SC) and Red Scare #1, 1917-1921. The current piece is a much more casual type writing and, hopefully, will be a part of the SC website. My purpose in this piece is to illustrate how SC was smeared in the Reece Committee Report of 1954 without any possibility of retort before the Committee. This piece might inspire a much more academic work on the Reece Committee--a rich topic indeed. This piece also shows that SC was a marked man by …

There are two very specific reasons why this piece was researched and written. The first is a continuation of my work done on Stuart Chase (various publications). I am still hopeful my efforts will inspire an historian to do a 1000 page biography on Stuart Chase. The second is further example why my idea of using Verne’s book as the basis for a one-day management seminar is worth trying.

There has been recent scholarship by Bradley and Merino (1994) and Vangermeersch (2005) on this event and the subsequent eventual firing of Stuart Chase by the FTC. Bradley and Merino’s scholarship was limited to 1918 and 1919. Vangermeersch’s scholarship was limited to two narrow time periods (Oct. 20, 1919 and then from June 1920 to mid January 1921). This piece is written to extend the time frame from early 1917 through August of 1921. This piece, not only takes a broader time period, also broadens the scope of the prior scholarship. Historical Lessons On Id Technology And The Consequences Of An Unchecked Trajectory, Katina Michael, M G. Michael

This paper traces the use of identification techniques throughout the ages and focuses on the growing importance of citizen identification by governments. The paper uses a historical approach beginning with manual techniques such as tattoos, through to more recent automatic identification (auto-ID) techniques such as smart cards and biometrics. The findings indicate that identification techniques born for one purpose have gradually found their way into alternate applications, and in some instances have been misused altogether. There is also strong evidence to suggest that governments are moving away from localized identification schemes to more global systems based on universal lifetime identifiers.

Reiterated Commemoration: Hiroshima As National Trauma, Hiro Saito

This article examines historical transformations of Japanese collective memory of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by utilizing a theoretical framework that combines a model of reiterated problem solving and a theory of cultural trauma. I illustrate how the event of the nuclear fallout in March 1954 allowed actors to consolidate previously fragmented commemorative practices into a master frame to define the postwar Japanese identity in terms of transnational commemoration of "Hiroshima." I also show that nationalization of trauma of "Hiroshima" involved a shift from pity to sympathy in structures of feeling about the event. This historical study suggests that a …

This harvest report for the Oregon wine industry from 2006 discusses how plentiful yields and mature flavors increased consumer access to quality Oregon wine. Statewide, the growing season was warm and dry, thrilling the Oregon winemakers and growers. The sugar was slightly higher, and, with the moderate levels of acidity, the fruit maintained full flavors.

Providing supplements to the history of dermatology bibliographic record has been a continuous project for the past four decades. When the endeavor was initiated, the original authors decided that only contributions in English and those directly related to dermatology, excluding sexually transmitted diseases as such, would be indexed.

There is the perennial question of whether such a manually created bibiliographic project has a need. The obvious answer remains yes. While Index Medicus has expanded the number of journals that are indexed, the number of dermatology publications currently included by Index Medicus is just over fifty. Granted, most of the papers …

This paper provides a brief overview of the history of USDA-Extension wildlife and fisheries programs at the national level, with emphasis on the years 1978-2000. Portions of the earlier history of Extension wildlife and fisheries programs at the national level can be found in previous proceedings of these National conferences and in other publications (see Miller 1981). This review of programs conducted or influenced by the National Program Leader (NPL) during the period is a brief snapshot in time regarding the presence of an experienced and motivated professional serving in the NPL wildlife and fisheries position.
