The Southern Tree Of Liberty - The Democratic Movement In New South Wales Before 1856, Terry Irving
The Southern Tree Of Liberty - The Democratic Movement In New South Wales Before 1856, Terry Irving
Terence H Irving, Dr (Terry)
Responsible government began in New South Wales after two decades of radical democratic agitation. Radical intellectuals from England, Ireland, Scotland and Europe mobilized the working men and women of the colony to resist the aristocratic form of government proposed by pastoralists and city capitalists. There was violence on the streets and goldfields, and some notable electoral victories. As 'a great fear' gripped the local elites the British government forced them to accept a more liberal form of representative government in the belief that this would placate the democrats and keep the colony safe for British imperial needs.

The Sacred And The Secular In Clay's Quilt, Charlie Sweet, Hal Blythe

n a telling scene toward the opening of Clay's Quilt (NY: Ballantine, 2001), Silas House has the novel's protagonist, Clay Sizemore, heading up Town Mountain toward the Hilltop Club, the local honkytonk. As he approaches the club, Clay notices that "across the bowl that held the town, another mountain rose up" (52). The most noticeable feature on this opposite mountain is a "marble statue of Jesus with his arms stretched out in front ... so lit up that it could be seen for miles" (52). Importantly, this scene acts as House's foreshadowing of the struggle Clay will endure as he …

Religious Perspectives On Business Ethics, Scott Paeth, Thomas O'Brien
Thomas W O'Brien
In the first anthology of its kind, Thomas O'Brien and Scott Paeth have gathered unique pieces from across religious perspectives to illustrate the growing influence and contribution of religion to the field of business ethics. Tackling such wide-ranging subjects as Jewish environmental ethics, Zen in the workplace, and Christian social ethics, this text is a valuable addition to business ethics courses.

The Perfectionists Of Oneida And Wallingford, Charles Nordhoff, Paul Royster
The Perfectionists Of Oneida And Wallingford, Charles Nordhoff, Paul Royster
Paul Royster
The Perfectionists of Oneida, New York, and Wallingford, Connecticut, are best known for their practice of what they called “complex marriage,” a system of polygamy and polyandry devised by their founder John Humphrey Noyes (1811–1886). This account by Charles Nordhoff (1830-1901), a journalist based in New York, was drawn from his visits to the Perfectionist colonies, and includes a description of their history, organization, manners, beliefs, worship, faith-cures, and their practice of “criticism.”
The Five Editions Of Old Mens Tears, Paul Royster
The Five Editions Of Old Mens Tears, Paul Royster
Paul Royster
Following are reproduced the title pages of the five printed editions of Joshua Scottow’s Old Mens Tears for Their Own Declensions. It is certainly unusual for such a work to have been reprinted so many times over such a long period, 1691–1769, and it must testify to the continuing appeal of the tract in New England. Scottow died in 1698, and so had no hand in any of the editions except the first. A multi-edition collation might yield a genetic tree, showing which editions derived from which others. Preliminary examination seems to suggest that the second and third editions derived …
The Discovery, Settlement And Present State Of Kentucke (1784) : An Online Electronic Text Edition, John Filson, Paul Royster (Editor)
The Discovery, Settlement And Present State Of Kentucke (1784) : An Online Electronic Text Edition, John Filson, Paul Royster (Editor)
Paul Royster
This is an open-access electronic text edition of Filson’s seminal work on the early history of Kentucky, including the first published account of the life and adventures of Daniel Boone. Filson’s work was an unabashedly optimistic account of the western territory, where Filson had acquired large land claims, whose value he sought to enhance by the publication of this advertisement and incitement for further settlement. Scarcely two years after the violent and tragic British and Indian invasion of 1782, Filson portrayed Kentucky as a natural paradise, where peace, plenty, and security reigned. Of some significance is Filson’s recognition that the …

An Address On Success In Business (1867), Horace Greeley, Paul Royster (Depositor)
Paul Royster
Delivered before the Students of Packard's Bryant & Stratton New York Business College, November 11, 1867. "Young men, I would have you believe that success in life is within the reach of everyone who will truly and nobly seek it— that there is scope for all—that the universe is not bankrupt—that there is abundance of work for those who are wise enough to look for it where it is—and that, with sound morality and a careful adaptation of means to ends, there is in this land of ours larger opportunities, more just and well grounded hopes, than in any other …

Creative Commons As Conversational Copyright, Michael W. Carroll
Creative Commons As Conversational Copyright, Michael W. Carroll
Michael W. Carroll
Copyright law's default settings inhibit sharing and adaptation of creative works even though new digital technologies greatly enhance individuals' capacity to engage in creative conversation. Creative Commons licenses enable a form of conversational copyright through which creators share their works, primarily over the Internet, while asserting some limitation on user's right with respect to works in the licensed commons. More specifically, this chapter explains the problems in copyright law to which Creative Commons licenses respond, the methods chosen, and why the machine-readable and public aspects of the licenses are specific examples of a more general phenomenon in digital copyright law …

Enquiry On The Anima, Alan A. Mackenzie
Enquiry On The Anima, Alan A. Mackenzie
Alan A MacKENZIE
At midlife one tends to see life differently; in that, the meaning and purpose of the first half of life begins to fail us… and our whole agenda changes. Reaching midlife for many of my clients brings with it feelings of fracturing, alienation and lustiness. This paper is a reflective examination of how midlife changes bring out what Jung emphasized about the anima's role: as that factor in the male psyche responsible for the process of projection, not just for projections of and onto women- but all projection.
