NED-2 is a goal-driven system designed to help manage timber, wildlife, visual, and ecological goals for a forested ecosystem. The basic approach of the decision process modeled by NED-2 is to develop alternative management plans for the stands in a management unit, to simulate these plans over time, and then to analyze the results of the simulation to see how well the management goals are achieved by the alternative plans. The basic simulation tool used in the system is the USDA Forest Service Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS.) FVS provides a regeneration component, but a need was recognized for making available …

The Role Of Artificial Neural Network Models In Developing A Regional Wastewater Reclamation Facility For Beaufort, Sc, Usa, Paul A. Conrads, Edwin Roehl, William Martello, Edward Saxon

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Beaufort and Jasper Counties are two rapidly growing coastal counties in South Carolina. According to the 2000 census, the region grew by 40 percent during the preceding 10 years. The population growth has increased the quantity of wastewater in the area. The Beaufort River is a complex tidal river system that is home to shellfish grounds, fisheries nursery habitats, and extensive recreation by the local community. The river also serves as receiving water for treated wastewater from military and civilian wastewater reclamation facilities (WRF). Although not uncommon for coastal areas, the river is on the South Carolina list of impaired …

Development Of An Integrated Decision Support System For Water Quality Control In The Upper Litani Basin, Lebanon, Hamed Assaf, Mark Saadeh Jul 2006

Development Of An Integrated Decision Support System For Water Quality Control In The Upper Litani Basin, Lebanon, Hamed Assaf, Mark Saadeh

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Compared to the limited water supply in the Middle East, Lebanon is perceived to be a water rich country. Yet, it faces a growing water supply problem due to many factors including increases in demand, inadequate investment in infrastructure, and deterioration of water quality. Being the foremost water resource in Lebanon, the Litani River is at the center of several major water supply and irrigation schemes. However, the river water quality is severely impacted by the current practice of releasing untreated sewage into its water body, specifically in its upper basin which is home to about half a million inhabitants. …

Towards A User-Oriented Design Of A Dss For Integrated River-Basin Management: The Elbe Dss Prototype, Jean-Luc De Kok, Sebastian Kofalk

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The problems faced in the German part of the Elbe catchment range from poor navigation conditions and flooding vulnerability to a need for nature restoration in the floodplains. A variety of river engineering works such as large-scale dike shifting, channel dredging, and large-scale retention are in a planning or implementation stage. Usually the initiative for such measures is taken from a local or sectoral point of view. Therefore, it is not always clear how different measures will interact with each other, nor how their effects influence the natural conditions in the floodplains. In order to examine different strategies for sustainable …

Developing An Oasis-Based Irrigation Management Tool For A Large Semi-Arid Mountainous Catchment In Morocco, Carmen De Jong, K. Makroum, G. Leavesley

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This study is concerned with the management of water resources and development of a DSS (Decision Support System) in MMS (Modular Modelling System) for the semi-arid, mountainous Drâa catchment in SE Morocco. The catchment relies heavily on oasis irrigation in three different geographical units. These include firstly, the High Atlas mountains, secondly, the basin of Ouarzazate above the Mansour Eddahbi dam reservoir and thirdly the ancient date palmeries below the reservoir. In 1972 the dam was put into operation for hydroelectricity and irrigation. Following decades of drought the dam’s main function nowadays is irrigation. A DSS requires an efficient hydro-meteorological …

Prescriptive Treatment Optimization Using A Genetic Algorithm: A Tool For Forest Management, John Dewey, Frederick Maier, Walter D. Potter, Donald Nute, H. M. Rauscher, Mark Twery, Peter Knopp, Scott Thomasma Jul 2006

Prescriptive Treatment Optimization Using A Genetic Algorithm: A Tool For Forest Management, John Dewey, Frederick Maier, Walter D. Potter, Donald Nute, H. M. Rauscher, Mark Twery, Peter Knopp, Scott Thomasma

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper describes research on the use of a multiobjective genetic algorithm (GA) to optimize prescriptive treatment plans for forest management. The algorithm is novel, in that (1) the plans generated by the algorithm are highly specific, stating precisely when and where treatments are to be applied; and (2) logical rules and inference engines developed for a decision support system are used to evaluate the fitness of each plan. Fitness is based upon satisfaction of varied and often incompatible goals. The current (generational) GA has been compared in experiments to hill-climbing and simulated annealing algorithms, as well as to a …

A Decision Support System For Energy Production From Renewable Resources: Logistics Aspects Of Sustainable Forest Biomass Collection, R. Minciardi, M. Robba, Roberto Sacile, F. Frombo, Fulvia Rosso Jul 2006

A Decision Support System For Energy Production From Renewable Resources: Logistics Aspects Of Sustainable Forest Biomass Collection, R. Minciardi, M. Robba, Roberto Sacile, F. Frombo, Fulvia Rosso

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The consequences of the use of traditional fossil fuels has led, in the last years, the European Union to promote and encourage the development and the use of renewable energies rather than the traditional ones. Energy production from forest biomass does not involve the CO2 increase in the atmosphere, contributing in this way to the duties assumed by the European Community during the International Conference of Kyoto (1997). The developed DSS, that is a generalization and the further research activity presented in a previous work by the same authors (Freppaz et al. [2004]), is based on the integration of Geographic …
