10x The Talent = 1/3 Of The Credit: How Female Musicians Are Treated Differently In Music, Meggan Jordan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is an exploratory, qualitative study of female musicians and their experiences with discrimination in the music industry. Using semi-structured interviews, I analyze the experiences of nine women, ages 21 to 56, who are working as professional musicians, or who have worked professionally in the past. I ask them how they are treated differently based on their gender. Three forms of subtle discrimination are inferred from their narrative histories. First, female musicians are mistaken for non-musicians. They are encapsulated into inferior roles, like "the gimmick," "good for a girl," and "invisible accessory." Second, band mates and band managers control women's …

The Nature And Impact Of Police/Mentoring Relationships On The Attitudes And Behaviours Of Youth., Cathy Knowler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of police mentoring relationships with youth on their attitudes and behaviours toward authority figures. The data was collected through a Case Study of the Essex Ontario Provincial Police Cop Camp. A random sample of 15 youths was studied. The participants were chosen by their teacher and their VIP officer because they showed some leadership potential but needed some discipline in that area. The counsellors of the camp were all O.P.P. officers who volunteered their time in order for the camp to be able to function. The participants of the camp …

Ontario Domestic Violence Protection Act: An Analysis Of Discourse., April Girard Jan 2006

Ontario Domestic Violence Protection Act: An Analysis Of Discourse., April Girard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper explores different discourses in Ontario's Bill 117 (2000), An Act to Better Protect Victims of Domestic Violence. Through an examination of the Hansard transcripts this paper seeks to explore how feminist, men's rights and other actors, both state and non-state, collectively constructed the problem of domestic violence. I incorporate both feminist and Foucauldian insights focusing on how knowledge and power are deployed and produced within this discursive context. Using a combined content and discourse analysis research strategy, I identify seven important themes: everyone is responsible, protection and gender, rights and gender, funding and fairness, numerical and statistical truths, …

How Consumers Understand Private Security: The Case Of An Ontario Neighbourhood Security Program., Jeffrey G. Brown Jan 2006

How Consumers Understand Private Security: The Case Of An Ontario Neighbourhood Security Program., Jeffrey G. Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper deals with a contract security arrangement between a private firm and a group of residents of one public neighbourhood in an Ontario city. Using in-depth interviews with subscribers to the service, this is an exploratory study that analyzes the frequently neglected understandings of security consumers and the attributes of this new Canadian development in security provision. The results of this project highlight several themes, including disposable income, exclusivity, insecurity, responsibilization, and legality. These themes are used to demonstrate the claim that advanced liberalism relies on consumption, which is important for understanding how advanced liberal rule is put into …

Apparent Lesbian Performances, Heteroflexibility And Sexual Identity: Fluid Sexuality Among Young Women In Public Places., Allisa Scott Jan 2006

Apparent Lesbian Performances, Heteroflexibility And Sexual Identity: Fluid Sexuality Among Young Women In Public Places., Allisa Scott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Semi-structured interviews were used to document the experiences of fifteen young women between the ages of 18--31 who have engaged in "apparent lesbian performances". Apparent Lesbian behaviours occur when women engage in intimate behaviour with other women in public places. This study finds that women who engage in this behaviour may identify as lesbian, bisexual, or heterosexual. Their lesbian performativity is defined as "apparent" because it is characteristically not interpreted by the actors or their audience as the actions of "real" lesbians. Rather it is behaviour that has been encouraged and normalized by pop culture icons like Madonna and Britney …

Governing Female Sexuality: Prostitution, Problematic Associations And The Subcommittee On Solicitation Laws., Olga Marques Jan 2006

Governing Female Sexuality: Prostitution, Problematic Associations And The Subcommittee On Solicitation Laws., Olga Marques

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fuelled by the murder and disappearance of sex workers in British Columbia, the Subcommittee on Solicitation Laws (SSLR) was enacted to review current solicitation laws and recommend changes to ensure the safety of sex workers and the communities in which they work. Discourses of prostitution used by the SSLR were analyzed using governmentality literature (Rose, 1999) and Fairclough's (1992) social theory of discourse, to determine their continuity and variability from existing prostitution discourses, as well as their embodiment within the problematic of female sexuality. Although prostitution is not illegal in Canada, associations with crime, violence and public nuisance, serve to …

Perceptions Of Health And Environmental Contamination On The Aamjiwnaang First Nation Reserve (Ontario)., Kizzy Bedeau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research study explores how pollution from surrounding petro-chemical industry affects how aboriginal people on the Aamjiwnaang First Nation reserve construct their understandings of the land, the environment, and themselves as people. The residents are aware of the pollution around them, especially since tests of soil and water demonstrate high levels of toxic by-products of the industry. Traditionally, the self, land and spirituality formed coherent constructions of understanding the aboriginal self. Aboriginal people have a strong connection to their land and the environment as it forms part of their spirituality as well as relied upon for their modes of sustenance. …
