Relocating Segregation : The Pea Island Life-Saving Station, Jessica Caldwell

This study examines racial segregation through the lens of the first and only all African-American crew in the history of the United States Life Saving Service (L.S.S.), predecessor to the United States Coast Guard. The all-black Pea Island station, under Richard Etheridge’s leadership, remained the only L.S.S. station with any black surfmen from 1880 until WWII. This study will consider the geography of the station’s location on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the life of its keeper, Richard Etheridge, and the nature of the Life-Saving Service to show this segregated station provided some benefits to the men who served …

Elizabeth Kee served as the first woman to represent West Virginia in the House of Representatives from 1951-1964. Newly available sources: taped interviews with her son, Jim Kee, from 1978 and 1980; a complete copy of Elizabeth Kee’s entries into the Congressional Record; copies of many of her “Keenotes” columns from the late 1950s and early 1960s; and correspondence between Elizabeth Kee and veterans from West Virginia from 1961-1963 allow a more complete picture of Kee to emerge. This collection consists of four pedigree charts beginning with Joseph McKibben (deceased 1801). Included are 4 sequential blueprint sheets with the family genealogy prepared by Hugh L. McKibben of Sewickley, Pennsylvania in 1935 for the annual McKibben reunion. The first sheet begins with Joseph McKibben and fourth sheet goes to the seventh generation of McKibbens, bringing it to the then present day of 1935.

This collection consists of a tintype photograph with the following inscription: “(Tintype) Tintype picture of our family and father in Civil War uniform.” Tissue paper enclosed with the tintype contained the note "Elmer Pritchard's Fathers Picture". The Civil War diary of this Tennessee farm boy who was a soldier in the 41st Tennessee Infantry, CSA, is interesting for several reasons. It starts with his experiences in a POW camp a few months after his capture at Ft. Donelson, Tenn., in Feb. 1862. It relates the joy of being exchanged and returning to his unit. The remainder of the diary accounts his unit’s marching and skirmishing across Mississippi. He was a very detail-oriented person, and recorded the dates he mailed letters to his wife and the dates he received answers. As a lieutenant of his company, …

Nelson Slade Bond had a varied writing career that spanned 70 years. Primarily known for science fiction short stories, Bond also wrote plays, radio and television scripts, newspaper and magazine articles, poetry, public relations material, and books. The collection reflects the author's professional and personal lives consisting of writings, correspondence, business papers and financial records from 1925 to 2005. The collection was donated in four installments during and after Bond’s life from April 2006 to September 2007. The collection consists of paper materials related to the Bokair family, especially Ellen Kathryn Bokair. Items include student newspapers, concert programs, and other memorabilia related to Huntington High School during the mid-1950s, as well as letters to Ellen Kathryn from Job’s Daughters and the American Business Women’s Association. Information on other members of the Bokair family is minimal and includes a wedding invitation, report cards, a ceremony pamphlet, letter, and a newspaper article. While the collection spans the years, 1916-1971, the bulk of items date from the 1950s and 1960s.
