Third Time's The Charm: Choosing A Career In Librarianship, P. S. Mcmillen May 2001

Third Time's The Charm: Choosing A Career In Librarianship, P. S. Mcmillen

Library Faculty Publications

While many come to librarianship from other careers, I made my third major career change to the profession after a somewhat atypical process. I made myself the subject of a formal assessment process while completing a certificate program in career counseling. One of the first things we learned in the career counseling program is that most people take essentially an opportunistic path to their various jobs and careers, e.g., you know someone who does something that sounds sort of interesting, or someone knows someone else who needs someone… It’s often a very generic process and is, in fact, why so …

Architecture Library Web Pages: The Instruction Dimension, Jeanne M. Brown

Library Faculty Publications

It wasn’t until 1995, five years ago, that I started an architecture library home page, with a guide to researching architects that included print and net sources and of course with the Internet Guide to Architecture and Building. In autumn of 1999, librarians at Appalachian State University and Georgia Southern University had decided to revise their Web sites. Each institution’s site had been in place for more than a year, and experience with library users had shown that there were certain aspects of the sites’ designs that were confusing. Previous efforts to improve these library sites had involved the pooling of criticisms from the librarians and users, and then a small group of library faculty and staff would attempt to create new designs that avoided the weaknesses of the old designs.

Time And The Academic Librarian, Jeanne M. Brown Jan 2001

Time And The Academic Librarian, Jeanne M. Brown

Library Faculty Publications

For academic librarians to balance time requirements for research, service and job duties they need a keen sense of where their time is allocated. Although the literature gives some idea of average time allocated, a more detailed view is obtained through examination of one librarian’s seven-year accumulation of daily time logs. The log as a method for achieving balance and the goal of balance itself are explored.

In autumn of 1999, the library World Wide Websites at Appalachian State University and Georgia Southern University had been in place for more than a year, and many library users reported that certain aspects of the sites’ designs were confusing. In order to alleviate the confusion, librarians from the two universities decided to redesign the sites by determining the greatest sources of confusion. To do this, we studied how patrons used the web sites by way of user-centered usability testing.
