The Haitian Informal Sector In Miami, Alex Stepick

Alex Stepick

The nature of immigration policy toward Haitians in southern Florida is largely responsible for the nature of their participation in the labor market. As individuals with an ambiguous status in the United States they are forced to work for low wages on the fringes of the formal sector of the economy or in Miami's growing informal sector. Most notably an example of generative economic activity is the growth of Little Haiti in Miami and the support it provides its residents.

Family Resemblance: A Study Of Linguistic Conformity Within Family Systems, Rebecca L. Garnett

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This thesis reports the results of an empirical study designed to test two hypotheses from the early psychiatric work of C. G. Jung: first, the existence of a "family disposition" toward the word association test (WAT), and second, the theory that there is interference between the "thinking" and the "feeling" functions in an individual's cognitive processing. The experiment involved 52 normal subjects from 15 families, ranging in age from 12 to 65. Subjects were tested using an association instrument adapted from the WAT developed by Jung (Jung, 1973). Jacques Benigne Bossuet, was the Bishop of Meaux, and tutor to the Dauphin. He was renowned as a preacher and controversialist. He was a member of Vincent de Paul's "Tuesday Conferences." This sermon reflects a Tridentine theological viewpoint with respect to the place of the poor in salvation history.

Behavior Of Square And L-Shaped Slender Reinforced Concrete Columns Under Combined Biaxial Bending And Axial Compression, Wen Hu Tsao

A numerical analysis was developed to evaluate the complete load-deflection and moment-curvature relationships for square and L-shaped slender reinforced concrete columns subjected to biaxial bending and axial load. This computer model can be used for any cross section geometry and material properties of normal concrete. The analysis was based on a deformation control and both the ascending and descending branches of curves can be studied. The finite difference method was introduced to calculate the deflections which satisfy the compatibility equations. Six square slender columns and eight L-shaped slender columns were tested to compare their experimental load-deformation results with the analytical …

A Generalized, Parametric Pr-Qmf/Wavelet Transform Design Approach For Multiresolution Signal Decomposition, Hakan Caglar

This dissertation aims to emphasize the interrelations and the linkages of the theories of discrete-time filter banks and wavelet transforms. It is shown that the Binomial-QMF banks are identical to the interscale coefficients or filters of the compactly supported orthonormal wavelet transform bases proposed by Daubechies.

A generalized, parametric, smooth 2-band PR-QMF design approach based on Bernstein polynomial approximation is developed. It is found that the most regular compact support orthonormal wavelet filters, coiflet filters are only the special cases of the proposed filter bank design technique.

This report documents the August 1991 monitoring of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages in the Port Everglades Southport turning basin vicinity and adjacent areas of John U. Lloyd State Recreation Area. This is the first monitoring effort of the series carried out by Nova University Oceanographic Center. As of this sampling period, the turning basin is complete and in operation; mitigation areas in John U. Lloyd Park exhibit considerable vegetative expansion of cord grass, growth of mangrove seedlings, and natural recruitment of additional mangrove propagules (including black and white mangroves).
