Parody And Transcription In The B-Minor Mass, David Woolard Dec 1976

Parody And Transcription In The B-Minor Mass, David Woolard

Honors Theses

Johann Sebastian Bach's Mass in B Minor is not entirely an original work. Eleven of the twenty-five moments were either borrowed from Bach's earlier cantatas or were transcribed from the Mass into later choral works. In the process of borrowing, Bach often made significant changes in the original composition. In the preparation of this paper, each parody movement in the Mass was compared with the work from which it was drawn or, in four cases, the work drawn from it. Variants between the model and the parody were written down and classified. The resulting categories suggest insights into Bach's reasons …

The Effects Of The Norman Conquest On Anglo-Saxon Aristocracy, Cynthia L. Puryear Dec 1976

The Effects Of The Norman Conquest On Anglo-Saxon Aristocracy, Cynthia L. Puryear

Honors Theses

In 1066, William the Conqueror successfully invaded England. He established himself as king and began to implement his policies for complete control over the subjugated territory. The Norman invasion did not involve a large influx of people: but, rather a conquest by a man who acquired the country for himself and distributed the land to his followers. The old English aristocracy, mainly composed of the king's thegns, virtually disappeared with the conquest and was replaced by a new aristocracy.

The near disappearance of the English aristocrats and their replacement by Normans holding land in return for military service was an …

Hegel's Dialectic Of Artistic Meaning, Gary Shapiro Oct 1976

Hegel's Dialectic Of Artistic Meaning, Gary Shapiro

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Whatever else they are, works of art are intentional human products. Our responses to such works are understandings and interpretations. That the works are or may be physical objects, cultural symptoms, or commodities and that audiences may be shocked, sexually excited, or politically instructed are irrelevant to the cognitive poles of intention and interpretation; these make art philosophically significant and differentiate it from that which has no meaning, despite possible similarities in apparent structure or emotional effect. Cognitivist theories of art usually tend to focus rather exclusively on just one of the two poles which characterize art so conceived - …

Anais Nin's Under A Glass Bell : From Interior Fatality To Psychological Motion, John Harty Aug 1976

Anais Nin's Under A Glass Bell : From Interior Fatality To Psychological Motion, John Harty

Master's Theses

Most of the critic ism on Anais Nin has been an overview of her entire work. Under A Glass Bell is included but, to my knowledge, no one has explored each individual story deeply enough since Nin herself recommends Under A Glass Bell as the book to begin with when reading or studying her works. Ibelieve that her recommendation is correct because Under A Glass Bell contains the nucleus of themes which she conc entrates on in all of her works, including the Diaries.

The Modification By Temperature Of The Effects Of Mammalian Follicle Stimulating Hormone And 17b-Estradiol On The Process Of Vitellogenesis In The Lizard, Anolis Carolinensis, Susan Howard Early Aug 1976

The Modification By Temperature Of The Effects Of Mammalian Follicle Stimulating Hormone And 17b-Estradiol On The Process Of Vitellogenesis In The Lizard, Anolis Carolinensis, Susan Howard Early

Master's Theses

The effects of porcine follicle stimulating hormone, 17B-estradiol, and a combination of the two on the process of vitellogenesis were studied in Anolis carolinensis maintained at 15C with no light for one week, and then at 15C or 32C with 14 hours of light for two additional weeks.

At both temperatures, the control animals subjected to 14 hours of light possessed greater numbers of previtellogenic follicles and lower liver weights than the control animals sacrificed after one week in the dark. Animals maintained at the higher temperature and given different hormonal treatments showed significant increases in ovary and oviduct weights, …

Retention As A Function Of Transfer Paradign And Introversion-Extroversion, Glenna F. Hasslacher Aug 1976

Retention As A Function Of Transfer Paradign And Introversion-Extroversion, Glenna F. Hasslacher

Master's Theses

In an effort to investigate the effects of personality on paired-associate learning, sixty students from the Univer sity of Richmond were separated into three groups of extro vert, control, and introvert, on the basis of the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI). Five Ss from each group were randomly assigned to four paired-associate learning conditions (A-Br, A-C, C-B, C-D) and required to learn an A-B and a second paired-associate learning list to a criterion of one perfect score. Subjects were required to return to the lab after 24 hours for a retention test of both the second list and the original A-B …

Seasonal Nearshore Distributions Of Fishes In A Piedmont Section Of The James River, Virginia, Eugene George Maurakis Aug 1976

Seasonal Nearshore Distributions Of Fishes In A Piedmont Section Of The James River, Virginia, Eugene George Maurakis

Master's Theses

The seasonal nearshore distributions of 17 species of fishes were determined in natural and artificially heated areas in a 9.6 km stretch of the Piedmont section of the James River, Virginia from July, 1973 to June, 1974. Analyses of the seasonal distributions were based on abundance and percent frequency of occurrence data. The maximum abundance and percent occurrence of ten of the 17 species of fishes in natural temperature areas occurred in early autumn. Deviations from this pattern included Notropis analostanus, equally abundant throughout the year, and Lepisosteus osseus, Notropis amoenus, Notropis ardens, Notropis rubellus, Catostomus commersoni and Lepomis macrochirus, …

An Fe (Iii) - Initiated Oxidase Reaction With Ferroxidase-Ii, Glenn Alexander Hegamyer Aug 1976

An Fe (Iii) - Initiated Oxidase Reaction With Ferroxidase-Ii, Glenn Alexander Hegamyer

Master's Theses

A reaction involving iron as an intermediary electron carrier for the coupling of electron transfer from an endogenous substrate to ferroxidase-I has been proposed.

The enzymic nature of the reacti on has been established and studies with iron chelating agents have demonstrated the involvement of Fe(III). The kinetic parameters of ferroxidase-11 with Fe (lll) were found to be quite similar to those previously established for Fe(Il). The participation by the copper associated with ferroxi dase-11 was ascertained by use of the copper chelating agent, diethyl -di thio-carbamate .

A variety of substances normally found in blood were surveyed as possible …

A Three Step Strategy For Training A Beginning Teacher To Use Positive Social Reinforcement In The Classroom, Robert D. Morris Aug 1976

A Three Step Strategy For Training A Beginning Teacher To Use Positive Social Reinforcement In The Classroom, Robert D. Morris

Master's Theses

The purpose of the study was to measure the effectiveness of a three-step strategy designed to modify a classroom teacher's consequating behavior. In Step 1, a group contingency game was introduced into the classroom to reduce talk-outs and out-of-seats. In Step 2, the game was supplemented by observer instructions and feedback to the teacher concerning her consequating behavior. The purpose of the feedback was to increase teacher approval for appropriate behavior and to decrease teacher disapproval for inappropriate behavior. In Step 3, the group contingency game was removed but the teacher continued to receive feedback on her consequating behavior. Therefore, …

The Effects Of Prolonged Ultraviolet Irradiation On The Pigment System Of Pet/Wmr Mouse Epidermis, Penny Suzanne Nair Aug 1976

The Effects Of Prolonged Ultraviolet Irradiation On The Pigment System Of Pet/Wmr Mouse Epidermis, Penny Suzanne Nair

Master's Theses

Repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation brings about an increase in the DOPA-positive melanocyte population of the human. However, there is an age-dependent decline in the melanocyte population regardless of UV irradiation. In the rhesus monkey, a drop in the DOPA-positive epidermal melanocyte population has been observed after prolonged UV irradiation. The population of DOPApositive epidermal melanocytes in PET/Wmr mice reaches a peak during the first post-natal week after which the number of cells declines, fading almost completely within 3 weeks. Their occurrence in adult mice is rare. With UV irradiation (300 nm) the melanocyte population of newborn and adult PET …

The Effect Of Photoperiod On The Regressive Phase Of The Ovarian Cycle Of The Lizard, Anolis Carolinensis., John Dickens Pinch Aug 1976

The Effect Of Photoperiod On The Regressive Phase Of The Ovarian Cycle Of The Lizard, Anolis Carolinensis., John Dickens Pinch

Master's Theses

The effects of constant photoperiod (14 hours of light) and decreasing photoperiod (13-8 hours of light) on the regressive phase of the ovarian cycle of the lizard Anolis carolinensis were investigated. Changes in body, liver, ovary and oviduct weights were measured and microscopic examinations of several ovarian parameters were made. In both light regimens body and liver weights decreased over the first four weeks of the experiment but both increased at the sixth week. In addition, ovary weight was highly variable but exhibited a decreasing trend and oviduct weight decreased. There were decreases in the number of previtellogonic follicles and …
