Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
These data included the records of 818 purebred gilts and sows of Duroc, Hampshire and Yorkshire breeding mated to produce all purebreds and all possible two-way crosses. A total of 212 gilts were slaughtered 30-day postbreeding (72 purebred matings and 140 crossbred matings) to evaluate ovulation rate, number of live embryos, average embryo length and embryo survival rate. A total of 450 litters (161 purebred and 289 crossbred) were farrowed to evaluate litter size, litter weight and average pig weight at O, 21 and 42 days postfarrowing. Litters were farrowed in the spring and fall of 1971 and 1973 and …
Effect Of Altitude On The Peripheral Degradation Of Thyroxine In The Uinta Ground Squirrel (Citellus Armatus), Stuart K. Ware
Effect Of Altitude On The Peripheral Degradation Of Thyroxine In The Uinta Ground Squirrel (Citellus Armatus), Stuart K. Ware
Theses and Dissertations
Various methods were employed to detect changes in the peripheral degradation of thyroxine (T4) in adult Uinta ground squirrels (Citellus armatus) collected at two different altitudes (5400 and 9000 feet.) Plasma half-life of injected T4-125I (tl/2) was significantly decreased with altitude, as was T4-125I distribution space (TDS) and T4 degradation and secretion rate (TSR). In vitro deiodination of T4-125I by heart homogenates was not affected, while urinary excretion of thyroxine derived iodide was increased at high altitude 44-70 hours post-injection. Both total and free serum T4 concentrations were reduced at high altitude, although not significantly. The cause of the reduced …
Potential Diets For Carp Production, Rex Carlton Infanger
Potential Diets For Carp Production, Rex Carlton Infanger
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of raising carp on pig manure and coli, Brassica campestris. The use of pig feces as a source of fish food has been questioned by researchers (Hickling 1968). Coli was selected for dietary intake by fish since it is used for human consumption by the Indians of Guatemala. Commercial fish food (Silver Cup) was used for a control diet. These diets were both combined and used as a single source of food.
Spatial And Temporal Partitioning Between Sympatric Rodents: Zapus And Peromyscus, Emma Bernice Speer
Spatial And Temporal Partitioning Between Sympatric Rodents: Zapus And Peromyscus, Emma Bernice Speer
Theses and Dissertations
Partitioning space and time by seemingly sympatric rodents, Zapus princeps and Peromyscus maniculatus, were examined as possible mechanisms allowing coexistence. The two populations were studied in Central Utah with an electrically monitored grid. Spatial separation of individuals and the populations minimized confrontations and created local allopatric distribtuions. Temporal partitioning was not used as a mechanism to allow coexistence and was apparently independent of spatial partitioning. The Peromyscus population was composed primarily of males which may have been due to less favorable habitat and/or presence of Zapus. The data show that Peromyscus tend to avoid Zapus, possibly due to deleterious aggressive …
Population Characterization And Feeding Behavior Of A Subtidal Neogastropod, Amphissa Columbiana, Bruce C. Stone
Population Characterization And Feeding Behavior Of A Subtidal Neogastropod, Amphissa Columbiana, Bruce C. Stone
Theses and Dissertations
The neogastropod Amphissa columbiana is found abundantly in subtidal areas of the San Juan Archipelago. Two populations studied were composed of distinct age classes of sexually immature and mature specimens. Reproduction appears to take place in the fall by snails at least two years old. Amphissa is a chemoreceptive scavenger that usually feeds on carrion and on dead and injured animals. Feeding behavior is mediated by chemical attractants from dead and traumatized tissue. An unusual feeding association is formed where Amphissa congregate around feeding predators to share their meals. A specific defense mechanism is deployed by Amphissa especially in response …

Analysis Of Four Common Play Patterns In Juvenile Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus Tridecemlineatus), Mary Melville
Analysis Of Four Common Play Patterns In Juvenile Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus Tridecemlineatus), Mary Melville
Field Station Bulletins
Young mammals spend a considerable amount of time engaged in activities which are called "play". The ethological literature contains much controversy concerning the definition and adaptive significance of play. Fagen (1974) characterizes playas active, oriented behavior with a highly variable structure, which apparently lacks immediate purpose, and which is often accompanied by specific signal patterns. He also notes that in playful behavior the adult sequences of behavior break down. Behavioral components such as threats, grooming and sexual posturing are performed in novel and rapidly changing sequences that would be nonadaptive in the serious contexts of adult life. Play in young …
The Effect Of Human Disturbance On Vegetation At The Wehr Nature Center In Whitnall Park, Mariette M. Nowak
The Effect Of Human Disturbance On Vegetation At The Wehr Nature Center In Whitnall Park, Mariette M. Nowak
Field Station Bulletins
During 1975 and 1976, I studied (Nowak, 1976) two woodlands at the Wehr Nature Center in WhitnaLl Park, Milwaukee County (Figure 1). My purpose was to document the vegetational changes brought about by human disturbance. The Wehr Woods, adjacent to the Wehr Nature Center Building, had been lumbered and grazed; while the woods along College Avenue is subjected to seasonal flooding, a result of road construction which had altered the drainage pattern. In each woodland, a disturbed portion was compared with an adjacent, relatively undisturbed area. The heavily lumbered and grazed portion of the Wehr woods will be referred to …
A Study Of A Population Of The Slender Glass Lizard In Waushara Co., Wisconsin, Thomas A. Pleyte
A Study Of A Population Of The Slender Glass Lizard In Waushara Co., Wisconsin, Thomas A. Pleyte
Field Station Bulletins
The slender glass lizard (Ophisaurus attenuatus), a limbless member of the family Anguinidae, is one of the few lizards found in the state of Wisconsin. Records indicate that it is found locally in several sandy areas in the southern half of the state but little was known about its abundance in any of these areas before the present study was conducted in 1973 and 1974.

A Comparative Study Of A Salt Water Impoundment With Its Adjacent Tidal Creek Pertinent To Culture Of Crassostrea Virginica (Gmelin), William D. Anderson Iii
OES Theses and Dissertations
Certain physical, chemical and biological characteristics associated with the culture of subtidal Crassostrea virginica were assessed in a salt water impoundment and its adjacent tidal feeder creek. Large seed oysters (initial y = 57.3 mm) were transferred from a somewhat polluted estuary of Charleston Harbor to floating, mid-water, and bottom hardware cloth trays (200/tray) in a four hectare pond. Identical trays at comparable depths were placed in the tidal creek and each location was sampled monthly for growth and survival. Surface and bottom water samples were collected weekly throughout the study and hourly during four seasonal 25 hour stations. Standard …

A Taxonomic And Ecologic Study Of The Riverbottom Forest On St. Mary River, Lee Creek, And Belly River In Southwestern Alberta, Canada, Robert K. Shaw
Great Basin Naturalist
The riverbottom forest community of St. Mary River, Lee Creek, and Belly River in southwestern Alberta, Canada, is a unique ecological entity characterized by poplar species having their major Alberta distribution along these streams. Stands in the community are dominated by three tree species, six shrub species, and nine herb species. Establishment of the community is dependent on climate and substrate; destruction is the result of progressive lateral stream-flow erosion. Soils are sandy loams above gravel, with pH values of 7.7 to 8.0 and soluble salt concentrations of 176 to 458 parts per million. Trees in mature stands averaged 23.0 …
Dairy Cattle Breeding: Contributions Of Research On Field Data, L. Dale Van Vleck
Dairy Cattle Breeding: Contributions Of Research On Field Data, L. Dale Van Vleck
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Papers about dairy cattle breeding published in the Journal of Dairy Science from 1960 through 1975 were categorized according to whether the data came from institutional herds or from field collection and also according to whether the research was done with support of a regional project. Most project papers involved institutional data. The vast majority of non-project papers made use of field data. Nearly all papers classified as theoretical were also associated with field data or field recommendations. The major impact of breeding research projects with field data has been from improved genetic evaluation for production and from development of …

Defense Mechanism And Feeding Behavior Of Pteraster Tesselatus Ives (Echinodermata, Asteroidea), James Milton Nance
Defense Mechanism And Feeding Behavior Of Pteraster Tesselatus Ives (Echinodermata, Asteroidea), James Milton Nance
Theses and Dissertations
Pteraster tesselatus is noted for its external secretion of massive amounts of mucus. The mucus repels most animals, and fouls their respiratory physiology, if contact is maintained for any length of time. It provides protection essentially 100% of the time from Solaster dawsoni and Pycnopodia helianthoides, the only local stars that attempt to feed on Pteraster. The mucus, which is a simple mucopolysaccride, is produced in three different types of unicellular glands located in the epidermal tissues along the supradorsal membrane. Pores along the lateral walls of the ambulacral grooves provide fresh sea water for the dermal branchiae contained in …
Flight Of The Sea Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard
Flight Of The Sea Ducks, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
Their migration routes have been charted. Their breeding biology is known. Their eggs meat and feathers have long been used by man. But eiders at sea remain an enigma.
Nesting in colonies that can number hundreds of birds, the eiders are among the most conspicuous of tundra-breeding birds. Although female eiders are a study in grays and browns that match the arctic tundra, the males are most boldly patterned in black and white, with striking green head colors. When the nesting season ends, the birds disperse over the vastnesses of the northern oceans, out of range of most human observers. …
