An Extensible Natural-Language Query Interface To The Dbpedia Triple-Store, Wale Agboola Oct 2015

An Extensible Natural-Language Query Interface To The Dbpedia Triple-Store, Wale Agboola

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

DBpedia is a triple-based binary-relational database which contains 3 billion, and counting, facts derived from Wikipedia. Ideally, individuals should be able to access semantic web triple-store data through natural-language queries. Several attempts have been made to create natural-language (NL) query interfaces to DBpedia. However, no one has yet built a wide-coverage natural-language query processor for DBpedia. DBpedia does not currently encode contextual data representing the time, location or other properties of binary-relationships. This means that NL queries cannot contain prepositional phrases such as the phrase "in 2004" in the query: "what film was directed by Clint Eastwood in 2004". Existing …

Polyandry And Sperm Competition In The Alternative Reproductive Tactics In Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha), Jason Lewis Oct 2015

Polyandry And Sperm Competition In The Alternative Reproductive Tactics In Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha), Jason Lewis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) exhibit male alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs), in which males are either large, dominant hooknoses, or small precocious jacks. Multiple mating (or polyandry) is common by females, which partly explains the intense sperm competition. I examined whether females benefit genetically by mating with multiple males thus promoting sperm competition and whether males can use seminal plasma to influence the potential outcome during sperm competition. I found that polyandrous females do indeed benefit genetically compared to monandrous (singly mated) females through an increase in offspring hatching success. The benefits received by polyandrous females varied significantly depending on the …

Symbolic Representations Versus Embodiment: A Test Using Semantic Neighbours And Iconicity, Simritpal Kaur Malhi Oct 2015

Symbolic Representations Versus Embodiment: A Test Using Semantic Neighbours And Iconicity, Simritpal Kaur Malhi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to the symbolic representation account, word meaning can be sufficiently captured by lexical co-occurrence models (Markman & Dietrich, 2000). In contrast, the embodied cognition account maintains that words are understood via simulated perceptual experiences (Barsalou, 1999). The Symbol Interdependency Hypothesis reconciles these different approaches by proposing that we use symbolic representation most of the time and embodied approaches when deeper processing is required (Louwerse, 2007). To test this hypothesis, a series of experiments manipulated symbolic and embodied factors in shallow and deep processing tasks. Concreteness was also manipulated because it is thought to interact with depth of processing. Overall, …

Wind-Induced Response Of Bridge Stay Cables In Unsteady Wind, Arash Raeesi Oct 2015

Wind-Induced Response Of Bridge Stay Cables In Unsteady Wind, Arash Raeesi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to their long flexible nature and low inherent damping, stay cables on cable-stayed bridges are prone to dynamic excitations such as wind. Of specific interest to this research study is the dry inclined cable galloping phenomenon which has been addressed as a potential risk to stay cables. However, due to the complex nature of flow on a bridge site, differentiation between different wind-induced phenomena and their mechanism is very challenging. Several wind tunnel studies have confirmed the occurrence of dry inclined cable galloping under circumstances that could be easily satisfied on site. On the other hand, the transferability of …

Foundational Learning And Rehabilitation: An Investigation Of The Remedial Strategies Of Postsecondary Violin Instructors, Vanessa Andrea Mio Oct 2015

Foundational Learning And Rehabilitation: An Investigation Of The Remedial Strategies Of Postsecondary Violin Instructors, Vanessa Andrea Mio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Applied violin instructors at the postsecondary level often face the task of having to implement rehabilitation (remedial/corrective pedagogy) with incoming first-year students in order to address technical/musical habits or deficiencies. (Burt & Mills, 2006; Rolland, 1974b; Zweig, 2008). If students are not guided appropriately in the critical early stages, they increase their potential of developing poor technical habits or deficiencies that could be carried with them into their future studies (Hallam, 2013; Howe & Sloboda, 1991b; Kempter, 2003; Mills & Smith, 2003; Nerland, 2007). As various motor patterns are formed through habitual reinforcement, incorrect techniques may be strengthened (Salzberg & …
