How Does Mode Of Input Affect Incidental Vocabulary Learning, Yanxue Feng
How Does Mode Of Input Affect Incidental Vocabulary Learning, Yanxue Feng
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study investigated the extent to which different modes of L2 input contributed to vocabulary learning. One hundred and seventy-three EFL university students in China were randomly assigned to six groups, each of which was presented with the same full-length documentary in different modes: reading the transcript, listening, viewing with captions (VC), viewing without captions (VNC); silent viewing with captions (SVC), and a non-treatment control mode. A checklist-test and a multiple-choice test were designed to measure knowledge of the target words. Participants also completed the Vocabulary Levels Test (Webb, Sasao, & Ballance, 2017). The results showed that L2 incidental vocabulary …
Determining The Detective Quantum Efficiency (Dqe) Of X-Ray Detectors In Clinical Environments, Terenz R. Escartin
Determining The Detective Quantum Efficiency (Dqe) Of X-Ray Detectors In Clinical Environments, Terenz R. Escartin
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
According to Health Canada, dental and medical radiography accounts for more than 90% of total man-made radiation dose to the general population. Ensuring patients receive the health benefits of diagnostic x-ray imaging without use of higher radiation exposures requires knowledge and understanding of the detective quantum efficiency (DQE). Currently, the DQE is not measured in clinics because it requires specialized instrumentation and specific DQE-expertise to perform an accurate analysis. In this regard, the goals of this thesis were to: 1) address the limitations of measuring the DQE in clinical environments that affects the accuracy of the measurement; 2) develop and …
David Miller's Nationalism: A Critique, Ali Can Seven
David Miller's Nationalism: A Critique, Ali Can Seven
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis examines David Miller’s defence of nationalism. It considers what is termed “the compatriot partiality thesis”, that is, the view that we are justified in giving our compatriots more moral consideration than we give to outsiders. It examines the debate between Miller’s own ethical particularism and the ethical universalist position. Miller’s particularist view rests in part on his view that political theory must embrace a feasibility constraint, and his case for that is examined. Finally, Miller claims that his defence of nationalism is consistent with the endorsement of human rights. The thesis examines his attempt to incorporate an idea …
Essays On The Environment And Development, Rhita Pinta Berliana Simorangkir
Essays On The Environment And Development, Rhita Pinta Berliana Simorangkir
Economics Dissertations
Two essays in this dissertation explore how developing countries’ effort to improve development outcomes and to protect their forest areas affect deforestation.
The first chapter investigates the effect of a conditional cash transfers (CCT) program, a rapidly growing poverty alleviation program in developing countries, on deforestation. Although an increasing number of studies measure the effects of environmental programs on poverty, little empirical evidence exists about the effects of poverty programs on the environment. I estimated the effect of substantial and persistent income transfers to poor households in Indonesia on deforestation. To control for non-random selection of administrative areas receiving the …

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
This work concentrates on Langmuir wave filamentation instability in the kinetic regime of plasma and computation of Stokes wave with high precision using conformal maps.
Nonlinear effects are present in almost every area of science as soon as one tries to go beyond the first order approximation. In particular, nonlinear waves emerge in such areas as hydrodynamics, nonlinear optics, plasma physics, quantum physics, etc. The results of this work are related to nonlinear waves in two areas, plasma physics and hydrodynamics, united by concepts of instability, singularity and advanced numerical methods used for their investigation.
The first part of this …
Physicians’ Opinions On Connecticut’S Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, Carolyn Kwiat
Physicians’ Opinions On Connecticut’S Prescription Drug Monitoring Program, Carolyn Kwiat
Master's Theses
Background: The increase in prescription opiate misuse has become one of the largest public health crises facing the United States. Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) are large online databases that states use to monitor prescribing and filling of controlled drugs by physicians and pharmacies to identify patients who are misusing prescription drugs and to reduce the prevalence of opioids misuse. However, the literature is not conclusive as to whether or not PDMPs are effective in decreasing opioid misuse, and the rates of PDMP usage among physicians remains low, even in states where usage is mandatory.
Objectives: To investigate physicians' attitudes …

3-D Coverage Path Planning For Underwater Terrain Mapping, Zongyuan Shen
3-D Coverage Path Planning For Underwater Terrain Mapping, Zongyuan Shen
Master's Theses
This thesis presents an autonomous approach of 3-D coverage of underwater terrain using multi-level coverage trees. An autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) equipped with multi-beam sonar sensors, Doppler velocity log (DVL) and inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors is used to achieve this goal. The underwater 3-D search space is represented by a multi-level coverage tree which is generated online based on the obstacle information collected by the AUV. The nodes of the tree correspond to safe sub-areas for AUV navigation which are identified based on obstacle density in neighborhood of free cells. Standard tree traversal strategies like depth-first-search (DFS) and breath-first-search …
Impacts Of New England Oyster Aquaculture On Sediment Nitrogen Cycling: Implications For Nitrogen Removal And Retention, Amanda Marie Vieillard
Impacts Of New England Oyster Aquaculture On Sediment Nitrogen Cycling: Implications For Nitrogen Removal And Retention, Amanda Marie Vieillard
Master's Theses
In this three-year, seasonal study of sediment nitrogen (N) biogeochemistry, we used stable isotope techniques to measure the N cycling reactions nitrification, denitrification (DNF), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). Rates were compared to dissolved inorganic nitrogen exchanges between the sediment and overlying water to assess denitrification efficiency (DE). All measurements were performed on sediments underlying (oyster) and removed from (control) oyster aquaculture in two oyster farms in the Northeast, USA.
Overall, DNF was small relative to release of DIN from sediment to the overlying water. Based on DE, both sites were found to favor N recycling over N …
Conventionalization And Reduction In Natural Language Emergence: An Experimental And Computational Model Investigation, Russell Richie
Conventionalization And Reduction In Natural Language Emergence: An Experimental And Computational Model Investigation, Russell Richie
Doctoral Dissertations
In the emergence of natural languages, two processes typically co-occur: new form-meaning mappings are being conventionalized, and these forms reduce, i.e., shorten, in various ways. Despite this oft-noted co-occurrence, and the existence of theories of conventionalization and reduction separately, there are no explicit, mechanistic, and empirically-motivated theories of the connection between the two processes. To fill this gap, the present dissertation aims to better understand this relationship both empirically and theoretically, with experimental semiotics and agent-based modeling.
In the experiment, eight groups of four hearing, non-signing English-speaking participants were brought into the lab. Quads split into rotating dyads which …
Synthesis Of Alpha-Galcer Analogues As Inkt-Cell Agonists And Reactions Of 2-Methyleneoxetanes, Donald Raymond Caldwell
Synthesis Of Alpha-Galcer Analogues As Inkt-Cell Agonists And Reactions Of 2-Methyleneoxetanes, Donald Raymond Caldwell
Doctoral Dissertations
Glycolipids, particularly a-galactosylceramides, have gained considerable attention due to their ability to modulate immune responses. The discovery of a synthetic glycolipid antigen, KRN7000, has enhanced our understanding of iNKT cell function. Since KRN7000 stimulates iNKT cells to release both Th1 and Th2 cytokines in relative amounts at which the biological activity of either one is antagonized by the other, tremendous effort has been devoted toward synthesizing analogues of KRN7000 that bias cytokine release, as such targets may offer new approaches to treating viral infections, bacterial infections, cancer, and autoimmune conditions. The first part of this proposal describes the synthesis of …
Variability In Pragmatic Abilities In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Iris Chin
Variability In Pragmatic Abilities In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Iris Chin
Doctoral Dissertations
Communication involves information beyond what is coded in the linguistic stimuli produced by a speaker. How individuals are able to extract additional, pragmatic meaning from a speaker’s utterance (i.e., what kind of skills/knowledge might be involved) is relatively understudied. To address this question, the current study examined 7- to 10-year-old typically developing (TD) children and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)’s ability to interpret four different pragmatic devices: conventional implicatures, scalar implicatures, relevance implicatures, and metaphors. We were interested in determining whether variability in children with ASD’s ability to process such devices would be found and if so, whether their …
Relationship Between Disengagement Coping During Primary Treatment For Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer And Long-Term Depressive Symptoms: The Role Of Pain And Fatigue Interference, Hannah M. Fisher
Open Access Theses
Breast cancer survivors experience significant symptom burden during active treatment and survivorship. Psychosocial factors, such as coping, may influence the course of treatment-related physical and psychological symptomatology. Disengagement coping in particular, may be relevant to breast cancer survivors’ symptom experience. Yet, classification of individual coping responses to comprise a higher order category of disengagement coping remains ambiguous, and research investigating the role of disengagement coping on the trajectory of physical and psychological symptoms in breast cancer survivors has yielded inconsistent findings. This study aimed to test a mediation model elucidating the longitudinal relationship between a latent construct of disengagement coping …
Implementation And Evaluation Of A Preceptor/Mentorship Program During Orientation In A Long Term Care Facility: A Strategy To Increase Nursing Employee Satisfaction, Maria A. Painter
Doctoral Projects
High nursing turnover in long-term care (LTC) facilities is a significant problem that results in additional expenses, lower quality of patient care, increased adverse patient events, and decreased patient and nursing satisfaction. A structured orientation and supportive preceptors are protective factors in retaining nurses as well as increasing nursing job satisfaction and improving patient outcomes. The goal of this pilot project was to implement an evidence-based preceptor program for staff registered nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in an LTC facility to develop preceptors’ skills and preceptees’ orientation satisfaction. The preceptor development project facilitated by …

The scope of this study is to identify and improve wind speed prediction errors for storms that have impacted the Northeastern United States during 2003-2014. Accurate wind speed prediction under storm occurrences is significant to identify and assess impacts to the environment and critical infrastructure. Post-processing of a numerical weather prediction model (Weather Research and Forecasting-WRF) was used in the form of Universal Kriging for spatial interpolation and Kalman Filter for bias reduction. Two strategies for using the Kalman Filter in combination with Universal Kriging are investigated and assessed. Universal Kriging of Kalman Filter corrections reduced all error statistics of …
Key Differences Between Hepatic And Intestinal Apoc3 Regulation And Expression, And Implications For Cardiovascular Disease Risk, Gabrielle West
Key Differences Between Hepatic And Intestinal Apoc3 Regulation And Expression, And Implications For Cardiovascular Disease Risk, Gabrielle West
Master's Theses
In the intestine, apoC-III delays chylomicron secretion, and causes a decrease in chylomicron size. Once apoC-III is in circulation, apoC-III delays triglyceride-rich remnants clearance by inhibiting lipoprotein lipase and liver low-density lipoprotein receptor. In humans, high levels of plasma apoC-III directly result in hypertriglyceridemia. ApoC-III is a critical cardiovascular risk factor, and humans expressing null mutations in apoC-III are robustly protected from cardiovascular disease. Because of its critical role in elevating plasma lipids and CVD risk, the factors that regulate apoC-III expression in the liver have been determined, and include glucose, insulin (through FoxO1), and dietary fat. Considerably less is …

Amelioration Of Prenatal Alcohol Effects By Environmental Enrichment In A Mouse Model Of Fasd, Aniruddho Chokroborty-Hoque
Amelioration Of Prenatal Alcohol Effects By Environmental Enrichment In A Mouse Model Of Fasd, Aniruddho Chokroborty-Hoque
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy results in a spectrum of behavioural and cognitive deficits collectively known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Currently, little is know about if and how the external environment may modulate these deficits. I have used C57BL/6 mice to study this interaction between prenatal alcohol exposure and the postnatal environment. Alcohol exposure during synaptogenesis produces high levels of anxiety-like traits and decreased memory performance. Alcohol-exposed mice (and matched unexposed controls) were put in 'environmentally-enriched' conditions of voluntary exercise, physical activities and cognitive stimulation to ascertain the effects of a positive postnatal environment. The results show that …

The forms of my thesis work are inspired from various natural lives, such as virus, fungi, jellyfish, bacteria, blooming flowers, and sea creatures. They are vividly waving, rotating, spinning their tentacles, antennas, and microfibers …
Towards Accurate Automated Mri Based R2* Measurements Of Hepatic Iron Content, Aaryani Sajja
Towards Accurate Automated Mri Based R2* Measurements Of Hepatic Iron Content, Aaryani Sajja
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hepatic iron overload is a severe complication in patients receiving chronic blood transfusions for sickle cell disease, beta-thalassemia, and myelosuppression during chemotherapy. Accurate assessment of hepatic iron content (HIC) is thus paramount to quantify excessive iron accumulation and to monitor response to iron removal treatment. Needle biopsies are considered the reference standard to measure HIC. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods based on the effective transverse relaxation rate (R2*) have become a noninvasive alternative to measure HIC. R2* estimation typically involves 3 major steps - acquiring multiecho gradient echo (GRE) images of the liver under breath-hold, fitting a mono-exponential signal model …

Triple Positive Microparticles As A “Liquid Biopsy” For Risk Stratification Of Prostate Cancer, Harmenjit Singh Brar
Triple Positive Microparticles As A “Liquid Biopsy” For Risk Stratification Of Prostate Cancer, Harmenjit Singh Brar
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Prostate cancer remains a substantial contributor to cancer-related mortality worldwide. Current screening methods include obtaining a PSA blood test. However, controversy surrounds its use as it is neither sensitive nor specific.
Nanoscale flow cytometry is a type of microfluidics-based technology that allows enumeration of submicron tumor fragments known as microparticles (MPs). In this study, prostate specific microparticles in patient plasma were targeted using fluorophore-conjugated antibodies. Targeted cell surface antigens or biomarkers include: prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA), six-transmembrane epithelial antigen of the prostate-1 (STEAP1), ghrelin receptor (GHSR1a) and CD151.
A statistically significant difference in the level of MP levels was …
Ultraprecise Single Point Inverted Cutting Of Right Triangular Prismatic Retroreflectors: Process Enhancements And Cutting Mechanics, Nicolas Milliken
Ultraprecise Single Point Inverted Cutting Of Right Triangular Prismatic Retroreflectors: Process Enhancements And Cutting Mechanics, Nicolas Milliken
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Automotive lighting industry relies on retroreflective components to increase driver awareness in low-light conditions since their primary functionality is to return incident light back to the source and/or observer with minimal scatter.
Presently, industry makes use of conventional pin-bundling techniques for the fabrication of the retroreflective components. This method is time consuming, labour intensive, and restrictive with respect to the design process. For these reasons, the ultraprecise single point inverted cutting (USPIC) technology was developed as an efficient alternative for manufacturing novel right triangular prismatic (RTP) retroreflective structures.
This thesis outlines a number of enhancements that improve both the quality …

Labeling Of Graphs, Sumset Of Squares Of Units Modulo N And Resonance Varieties Of Matroids, Mohsen Mollahajiaghaei
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis investigates problems in a number of different areas of graph theory and its applications in other areas of mathematics. Motivated by the 1-2-3-Conjecture, we consider the closed distinguishing number of a graph G, denoted by dis[G]. We provide new upper bounds for dis[G] by using the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz. We prove that it is NP-complete to decide for a given planar subcubic graph G, whether dis[G] = 2. We show that for each integer t there is a bipartite graph G such that dis[G] > t. Then some polynomial time algorithms and NP-hardness results for the problem of partitioning the …
An Internet-Wide Analysis Of Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange And X.509 Certificates In Tls, Kristen Dorey
An Internet-Wide Analysis Of Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange And X.509 Certificates In Tls, Kristen Dorey
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a mature cryptographic protocol, but has flexibility during implementation which can introduce exploitable flaws. New vulnerabilities are routinely discovered that affect the security of TLS implementations.
We discovered that discrete logarithm implementations have poor parameter validation, and we mathematically constructed a deniable backdoor to exploit this flaw in the finite field Diffie-Hellman key exchange. We described attack vectors an attacker could use to position this backdoor, and outlined a man-in-the-middle attack that exploits the backdoor to force Diffie-Hellman use during the TLS connection.
We conducted an Internet-wide survey of ephemeral finite field Diffie-Hellman (DHE) across …

Expression And Characterization Of A Putative Βeta-Glycosidase From The Ginseng Pathogen Pythium Irregulare, Scarlett Puebla Barragan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
A putative ginsenosidase (PiGH1-x) from the oomycete pathogen of American Ginseng, Pythium irregulare, was expressed in E. coli DH5α to assess its capability to partially deglycosylate ginsenosides. The recombinant protein was extracted using non-denaturing and denaturing conditions and purified using gel filtration chromatography and nickel affinity purification. Glycosidase activity was tested using p-nitrophenyl β-D-glucopyranoside (pNPG) as the substrate and measured through spectrophotometry. Ginsenosidase activity was tested using ginsenoside Rb1 as the substrate, reaction products were identified using LC-MS. Recombinant PiGH1-x cleaved glucose from pNPG, and converted ginsenoside Rb1 into Rd and Gypenoside XVII, demonstrating both (12) and (16) glycosidase activity. …
Romantic Metasubjectivity: Rethinking The Romantic Subject Through Schelling And Jung, Gord Barentsen
Romantic Metasubjectivity: Rethinking The Romantic Subject Through Schelling And Jung, Gord Barentsen
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis takes up Friedrich Schelling’s philosophy and Carl Jung’s analytical psychology to develop Romantic metasubjectivity, a model of the subject absorbing more of the vast compass of Romantic thinking on subjectivity than what prevails in Romantic criticism. Romantic criticism tends to be dominated by psychoanalysis as well as deconstruction and poststructuralist theory, which see the subject as either a linguistic phenomenon or simply a locus of difference without a unified “I.” In response to this critical tradition, Romantic metasubjectivity discerns a notion of Self which is neither a linguistic fantasy nor a transcendental essence which is or becomes fully …

Evaluating And Improving Cochlear Length Measurements On Clinical Computed Tomography Images, John E. Iyaniwura
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Cochlear implants provide the sensation of sound to deaf individuals. An accurate estimate of cochlear duct length (CDL) is required for pre-operative implant electrode selection and can be obtained from clinical computed tomography (CT) by measuring the “A-value”.
The objectives of this work were to estimate the accuracy and variability in manual A-value measurements, and to automate measurements.
Four specialists repeatedly measured the A-value on clinical CT images from which the inter- and intra-observer variability were calculated. Accuracy was assessed by comparison to measurements on higher resolution micro-CT images. Motivated by this study, software was developed to automate the A-value …
Development Of Radar Absorbing Materials (Rams) Based On Nano-Structured Magnetic Materials And Applications, Ahmet Teber
Development Of Radar Absorbing Materials (Rams) Based On Nano-Structured Magnetic Materials And Applications, Ahmet Teber
Doctoral Dissertations
There has been a long-standing interest in the development of radar absorbing materials (RAMs) for military applications such as microwave absorbers for stealth technology, anechoic chambers, and morphing scenarios, as well as camouflaging ground-based hardware against airborne radar observation. Even so, there remain outstanding challenges in this area such as the selection of suitable material compositions, the available frequency bandwidth, and the required thickness of the materials. The properties of materials at the nano-scale can change significantly. With only a reduction in size (no change in the substance itself), materials can exhibit new properties such as electrical conductivity, insulating behavior, …
