Design And Fabrication Of Astrophysical Instrumentation For Distinguishing Infrared Sources, Serena M. Tramm Jul 2022

Design And Fabrication Of Astrophysical Instrumentation For Distinguishing Infrared Sources, Serena M. Tramm

Theses

Observations in the near- and far-infrared allow us to probe through cosmic clouds of gas and dust to uncover processes that are obscured at other wavelengths such as young stars embedded in dust clouds, thermal emission from the interstellar medium, and the birth of galaxies. However, cosmic infrared light is obstructed by Earth's atmosphere. As a result, infrared astrophysical instrumentation is often designed for use in space. As specific examples of technologies addressing the kind of science that can be performed at these wavelengths, I will discuss my contributions to two applications of infrared instrumentation: a Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) …

Post Millennium Tension, Dylan Peter Obser

Theses

In order to understand the world we live in, as it is mediated through technology, this process driven artwork Post Millennium Tension uses a machine I created specifically to visualize the inner workings of contemporary technology. The artwork is a large multi-paneled photograph and light-box display, that depicts the intimate everyday moments within a relationship. The relationship seen in the photographs is one that began on a phone where the individuals were matched by the Tinder algorithm. That relationship is documented and archived on a phone. The images act as proof and the artwork as a monument to a relationship …

The Effect Of Time Spent Using Social Networking Sites Through Smartphones On The Quality Of Undergraduate Students’ Mental Health, Maja Bracic

Theses

The majority of people has already adapted to the unpredictably fast advancements in smartphones’ (SPs) and social-networking sites’ (SNS) technologies by using them on everyday basis (Jena, 2015). Always at hand, SPs are the most preferred way of connecting to SNS and if we add up the addictive nature of both SPs and SNS, young people tend to use them noticeably more than other age groups (Babdi-Akashe, Zamani, Abedini, Akbari & Hedayati, 2014, p. 94). Yet, little is known about the long-term effects of this newborn symbiosis on the quality of mental health. Thus, this research study focuses on exploring …

The Soulless Machine, Nathan Lomas

Theses

Since their creation, we have grown increasingly reliant on machines to aid us in our understanding and perceptions of the world - the camera is no exception. As an extension of the human eye, it allows us the opportunity to examine our environments from new perspectives, offering up views that we may not be able to witness on our own. Though in truth, the structure of the machine is ingrained in everything we know: from the natural world to our social patterns, actions are prescribed, parts move with united purpose, yet there is a certain comfort in the surrender of …

Subject Vs Object, Francesca Lalanne Jeune Oct 2012

Subject Vs Object, Francesca Lalanne Jeune

Theses

This paper focuses on the concepts that inform my thesis work for the Master of Fine Arts in Fine Arts Studio from Rochester Institute of Technology. I have always been intrigued by circumstances such as war and oppression. I have also wondered about the opposite, moments of peace and serenity. Inevitably, I have allowed these dualistic thoughts to govern my artwork, abstractly through form and underlying narratives. In my thesis, I investigate concepts such as identity, history, memory, and how they play a role in my artwork. I see history as a tool for examining identity, while memory serves as …

Factors Contributing To The Success Of Commercial Printers, Diana Watkins Jun 2012

Factors Contributing To The Success Of Commercial Printers, Diana Watkins

Theses

Printing had been the uncontested primary media format for over five hundred years--with the commercial printing industry also thriving--until the late 1990s, when abnormal cost patterns and disruptive new media technologies worked together to permanently change the world economy and media landscape. Romano (2010a) estimated that 20% of all print production in the US had disappeared between 1995 and 2010. Many different theories have been posited to commercial printers as to how best to survive, but the overall message has been relatively consistent: print companies cannot rely on economic growth to regain business. Instead, they must adapt to the changing …

Let me begin by saying, I have been raised Catholic, and all of my life I have been influenced strongly by my beliefs. Throughout the continual passing of time, humanity has vigorously tried to give face to the invisible manipulators who seem to influence their thoughts and actions. On …
